Fresh lot of electronic voting machines prepared for poll process

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, February 1
Following the directions of the Election Commission (EC) of conducting re-election in a part of the Amritsar (East) constituency tomorrow after the electronic voting machine (EVM) at Booth No 76 developed a snag on January 30, the District Electoral Officer (DEO) today made arrangement for four EVMs. Out of the four, one EVM would be used for the poll process and other three would be kept as a reserve.

The experts fed data in the machines to prepare them for the tomorrow’s re-poll scheduled to be held at Government Elementary School, Sharifpura, at Booth No 76 from 8 am to 5 pm.

It has been learnt that earlier several candidates, including Congress rebel Simarpreet Kaur Bhatia and BSP’s candidate Tasem Singh Bhola, had lodged objection with the EC against the opinion of making use of reserved EVMs, which were already there in the strong room.

There are eight candidates in fray in the constituency. The prominent among them are BJP’s Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, Congress’ Sunil Dutti and BSP’s Tarsem Bhola. Congress rebel Simarpreet Kaur Bhatia is contesting as an Independent candidate from the seat.

“We approached the EC for making arrangement of a fresh lot of EVMs, instead of using the reserved lot, which is kept in a strongroom. We were afraid that once the seal of the strongroom is broken, there could be chances of tempering with other EVMs kept in it,” said Simarpreet Kaur Bhatia.

District Electoral Officer Rajat Aggarwal said there was difference of opinion on making use of reserved EVMs, therefore a fresh lot was prepared for the re-poll process to avoid any confrontation. The DEO also made it clear that all the votes polled through the earlier EVM would be cancelled.

“Actually, the procedure to feed data in an EVM is a very time-consuming exercise and the ones already there in the strongroom were all set to be used. Nevertheless, when some candidates objected to it, we had to prepare a fresh lot of EVMs. Four machines have been prepared to the entire satisfaction of all the candidates for the re-poll process scheduled for tomorrow,” he said.

Tribune News Service

Amritsar, February 1
With the lifting of ban on carrying cash over Rs 2.5 lakh, traders expressed a sign of relief as business rejuvenated after a month. However, the ban will be in force in Amritsar East constituency where re-polling at a polling booth is scheduled on February 2.

Vinod Mehta, general secretary of the Bullion and Ornaments Merchants Welfare Association and a jeweller, said trade in gold and silver jewellery has picked up and would be better with the passage of time. Trade in gold and silver jewellery had dropped by 80 per cent during the pre-polling phase when the model code of conduct was in force. The cost of raw materials in this business is very high and the limit of Rs 2.5 lakh levelled by the EC affected their business, he added.

Besides jewellers, automobile agency owners and filling station operators also took a sigh of relief over the lifting of ban.

Punjab Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA) president JP Khanna said the lifting of the cash carrying limit had re-energised their trade. He said filling station owners were facing difficulties in depositing cash to state-owned oil companies under the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) facility, which was available in selected branches of the banks. He said owing to the high cost of petrol and petroleum products the daily sale cross the monetary limit fixed by the EC.

Rohit Kapur, proprietor of Automobile Kapoor’s (I) Pvt Ltd, dealers of Tata Motors and Fiat, said nearly 30 per cent fall was experienced in automobiles business after the enforcement of model code of conduct. He said cash carrying limit had mainly dissuaded customers from rural and remote areas of the city. He hopes the sale will pick up in the coming days.
