5-yr-old boy dies after falling in manhole
Jalandhar, November 25 Sagar, the deceased child, was walking past the manhole with his parents and siblings after visiting a durgah, when he accidentally fell into it. Since it was dark around 7 pm, the child failed to notice the uncovered manhole and fell into it. Following the incident, the onlookers called up the civic authorities. Fire tenders and sewer men were called. The enraged residents started a protest at the site. A sewer man finally managed to fish out the boy’s body, but he was declared brought dead at the Civil Hospital. The residents of the area later even went to the residence of councillor Kirpal Singh Buti to lodge the protest. The SE (O&M), MC, AS Dhaliwal, was also at the site. The father of the child is working as a daily wage labourer. Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti said Rs 1 lakh would be given as an ex gratia amount to his parents. He said an inquiry was marked into the incident. “I have told the Commissioner to fix the responsibility of the staff for the incident. I am told that the manhole has been in this condition for the past six-seven months. If that is true, then the residents or some lower rung staff must have apprised the officials of the fact,” Deputy Commissioner said, adding that there had to be someone who was accountable for such a serious lapse. |

Phagwara, November 25 Two Phagwara residents, identified as Kuldip Kumar of local Santokhpura and Naresh Kumar of nearby Chack Hakim, were run over by moving trains last night. The Railway Police has registered cases and sent the bodies to the Civil Hospital for the postmortem. In another mishap, Sukhjinder Singh of Quadian village was killed, while his pillion rider friend Manpreet Singh sustained serious injuries when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a bus near Bilga village on Phillaur-Noormahal road last evening. The police has registered a case against the bus driver and impounded the bus. Pathankot: A 40-year-old man was killed as the cycle he was riding on was hit by an unknown vehicle near Trehati village on the Pathankot-Kangra road here today. The deceased was identified as Mulakh Raj, a resident of nearby Jandwal village. The police said the body was handed over to his family members after postmortem. A case was registered against the driver of the unknown vehicle at the Mamun police station.

Pharmacists to go on hunger strike from Nov 28
Amritsar, November 25 Addressing apress conference, Association Convener, Shamsher Singh Kohri, said the pharmacists will observe mass hunger strike outside the offices of the civil surgeons at all district headquarters. “The employees will begin their mass hunger strike at 3pm on November 28 which will culminate at 3 pm on November 29,” said Kohri. The association has also decided to hold a state- level protest at Bathinda on December 7. “The pharmacists will proceed on a mass casual leave to attend a rally on December 7,” said Ashok Sharma, association finance secretary. He said the government has provided a grade pay of Rs 3,600 to the pharmacists while they have demanded Rs 4,200, Rs 4,800 and Rs 5,400 for pharmacists, chief pharmacist grade II and chief pharmacist grade I, respectively. Association secretary Kishore Sharma said, “The association had also demanded that the names of the designations as pharmacists, chief pharmacist grade II and chief pharmacist grade I should be changed to pharmacy officer, senior pharmacy officer and chief pharmacy officer.” Sharma said in a meeting with the chief minister on November 5 he had announced to change the names of the designations but the decision has not been notified so far. Meanwhile, the multipurpose health workers action committee organised a protest march to express their anguish against cane-charging of workers protesting near Chandigarh on November 23. Jasbir Kaur Moonak, association leader said several workers were injured in the incident. “A local health worker was also got severely injured as the driver carrying the workers tried to flee and an accident took place as a result.” |

Tarn Taran, November 25 Meanwhile, a head constable of the Punjab Police, Jagdev Singh (40), was found dead by his family members in the morning at his native village Jamarai, 25 km from here. The police said the postmortem report stated that he died of heart failure. The Goindwal Sahib police has initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.

Tarn Taran, November 25 The victim, Palwinder kaur (27), residing with her parents at Talwandi Sobha Singh village, 45 km from here, in her statement to the police alleged that she had been thrown out from her in-laws’ house as her in-laws had been demanding Rs 2 lakh and an AC from her parents. She alleged that when she failed to bring the cash and AC from her parents, her in-laws threw her out of the house. Case has been registered against her husband Gurmit Singh, mother-in-law Jasbir Kaur of Khadur Sahib, and her two sisters-in-law Harjit kaur and Kawanjit Kaur along with their husbands Tarsem Singh and Simarjit Singh, respectively. Hoshiarpur: On the complaint of Joginder Singh of Mehandipur, the police has registered a case against his daughter-in-law Baljit Kaur, her father Satwant Singh, Sukhdev Singh, all of Saidowal, Soni of Dudia and Baby of Awana under Sections 302 and 120 of the IPC at the Mukerian police station for mentally torturing his son Sukhdev Singh, following which he committed suicide. According to police sources, Sukhdev Singh had been living in Greece for earning his livelihood for the last 12 years. He came to India to attend the marriage ceremony of his sister-in-law’s son. He demanded gold ornaments from Baljit Kaur, but instead of giving them to him, she refused to even live with him. He became mentally upset due to this and consumed poison. Amritsar: Acting on a tip-off, the Rambagh police nabbed one Ravinder Pal Singh, a resident of Kohali village and residing in Verka, for allegedly stealing vehicles and selling them after forging documents. However, his accomplice Balwant Singh managed to escape. The police also recovered Rs 2,000 of counterfeit currency besides one motorcycle from them. A case under Sections 379, 411, 420, 468, 471, 489-A, 489-B, 489-C and 34 of the IPC has been registered in this regard. The Rambagh police received specific information that the accused had formed a gang and used to steal vehicles from various parts of the city and sell them after forging documents. The accused was also involved in the fake currency racket. The police recovered a motorcycle numbering PB-02-AE-6628 and four counterfeit notes of denomination of Rs 500 each. |

The victim had gone out with the family to Bawa Lal Ji Mandir, Dhianpur, to pay obeisance. In another incident, burglars broke into the office of a marble traders on the Gurdaspur road and took away Rs 35,000 yesterday. |
