Students continue strike, hold protest
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, November 23
Students of BLM Girls College under the aegis of the Punjab Students Union (PSU) continued their strike against the exorbitant charging of fee and imposition of fines consecutively for the fifth day here today.

The students took out a protest march in the town and gheraoed the office of the president of the college managing committee at Kothi Road.

Gurmukh Singh Mann, state PSU president, while addressing the protest rally, said the state government had not only been imposing cuts in the grant-in-aid of the privately managed government-aided colleges, but also imposed a ban on the recruitment. Due to this, the privately managed government-aided colleges had been facing acute fiscal deficit. These colleges were being forced to charge exorbitant fee and funds from students to make up for the cut in grants and pay salaries to the staff arranged by them against the posts lying vacant.

Manpreet Kaur, president of the college unit of the PSU, accused the college authorities of causing harassment to the students by imposing hefty fines, like Rs 100 per day as late fee fine.

The students had submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner in this regard, but nothing concrete had been done so far. The student leader threatened to gherao the office of the Deputy Commissioner, if the hefty fines imposed by the college authorities were not withdrawn immediately.

Meenakshi Sharma, Principal of the college, said the issue would soon be resolved amicably.
