Man kills father
Ferozepur, November 7 Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surjit Singh said that yesterday in the morning, the police got the information about the murder of an elderly trader, identified as Jang Singh, who was found dead in his house in the Sirki Bazaar area. The SSP said the police had lodged a case on the basis of the statement of the son of the deceased, Daler Singh, who had told the police that some persons had killed his father. The SSP said duringinvestigations conducted by the special investigations team (SIT) led by Jatinder Singh Beniwal SP (Detective), it was found that Daler had allegedly hit his father with a road three times in the head following which the old man died. The SSP said that Daler has been arrested and an amount of Rs 40,000 which belonged to his father has also been recovered. Meanwhile, detailed investigations pertaining to the murder case of the local industrialist Pramod Mittal, who was found dead in his office on October 29 last, revealed that his own son Manuj was present in the office when his father was being killed by his three accomplices. The SSP said that Manuj had earlier mislead the police by giving false statement, adding that he had actually promised to pay Rs 25 lakhs to the four contract killers for eliminating his father. The SSP said that during the interrogations, it was found that Manuj had tried to kill his father on two separate occasions earlier also. However, he finally succeeded in his designs only on October 29 under a well planned strategy. The SSP said on that fateful day, after ensuring that his father was dead, Manuj had taken out an amount of Rs 80,000 from the closet of his father and divided it amongst his accomplices with a promise to deliver the rest of the amount soon. The SSP further said that the police remand of all the accused has been extended till November 10. |

Nexus between officials, contractors may come to fore
Moga, November 7 The suspended employee of the department, Daljit Kaur, while speaking to The Tribune, revealed that the contractors of the wholesale and retail vends, mostly deposit the money in advance, which is adjusted as per their request for permits from time to time. The loophole in depositing the money in advance is that the deposited amount sometimes is much less than the actual excise duty of all the wholesale and retail shops. The contractors, by manipulating with the officials, get permits for lifting liquor but do not adjust their amount against the heads of those permits, giving an impression that they are paying huge amounts in advance. In fact, this amount does not get adjusted against each head of the issued permit for days due to which many liquor vends and wholesalers become defaulters for that period. But an impression is given that they pay advance money. Adding that an amount of Rs 1.45 crore of the local contractors was pending with the excise department at Moga till October 29, 2011, she said that no permits had been issued against this amount justifying 'smartness' of advance payments. Daljit claimed that she cleared the file of issuing the controversial five permits against a receipt of Rs 5.29 lakh adjusted against advancement. Therefore, it is wrong to say that the excise duty was not deposited in the treasury. She further revealed that the education cess has so far not been deposited in the head of the education department in the treasury against the payments received from the contractors for the past couple of months, which, otherwise, requires to be deposited from before issuing permits. Here, the contractors manipulate with authorities to delay the payments of education cess. This practice is going on throughout the state for years, which needs to be probed minutely, she demanded. Adding that her senior officials themselves verified all the documents and signed the permits after making online entries, she said that they are equally responsible for the issuing of permits. Vinod Sharma, president and Sanjiv Kaura, secretary of the ministerial staff union, had condemned the suspension of the woman employee demanding her reinstatement and a fair probe. |

He said that the law and order situation in Punjab has worsened and the crime graph has steeply gone up. A party general secretary Rupinder Bindra said that the campaign against SAD would be further intensified in the days to come.
