Man, father set minor girl ablaze, booked

Two days after a youth set a teenaged girl, who had spurned him, on fire in Kotsukhia village of Faridkot, the victim succumbed to burns at the Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot today.

Man, father set minor girl ablaze, booked

A man and his father have been booked by the Sadar Police for attempt to murder a minor girl at her house in Dharangwala village near here late on Friday night.

Sources said the girl, aged about 14 years, reportedly informed her parents that one Raj Pal had tried to molest her near the garbage dumping point in the village late on Friday evening but fled on seeing someone passing by as she resisted his move. Her parents went to their relatives’ house to discuss the matter leaving her alone. Few minutes later, some persons, including Raj Pal and his father Banwari Lal, forced entry into her house, allegedly sprinkled kerosene oil on her and set her ablaze. As she cried for help, the accused fled.

Her parents and others reached the place and extinguished the fire.

The victim, who sustained 75 per cent burns, was rushed to the Nehru Memorial Civil Hospital here, about 15 km away from the village, but had to be referred to the Medical College Hospital, Faridkot, for doctors found her condition to be critical.

The girl’s statement was recorded by judicial magistrate Mohit Bansal at the Civil Hospital before she was shifted to Faridkot.

The Sadar Police has registered a case against Raj Pal and his father Banwari Lal under Sections 307, 452, 354 and 34 of the IPC.

65 war hero remembered

The Army remembered its 1965 Indo-Pak war hero Major Surinder Prasad, son of former Punjab MLA Master Teg Ram, by organising a wreath laying ceremony at Shaheed Major Surinder Prasad Chowk here.

Brigadier PS Behl, Station Commander, Military Station, Abohar, was the chief guest at the function organised by the 12 Battalion, Bihar Regiment.

Civil officials and a large number of locals gathered to pay homage to the son of the soil.

Surinder Prasad was born on November 5, 1938, here. An alumnus of the Municipal Board High School, which is now known as Government Senior Secondary Model School for Boys, he did his post-graduation from the DAV College, Jalandhar, and was commissioned into the 19 Maratha Light Infantry on December 17, 1961.

Major Prasad died a soldier’s death and displayed sheer guts and raw courage while fighting for his motherland on September 23, 1965, officials said while paying tributes.

Major Surinder Prasad was awarded Vir Chakra (Posthumous) on November 2, 1966.

3 get life imprisonment for raping teenager

The court of additional district and session judge, Faridkot, Ramesh Kumari today awarded life imprisonment to three persons, who were accused of gang raping a teenaged girl. Besides, the court imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on each accused.

According to the details of the case, on the complaint of the father of the victim, the Sadiq Police in Faridkot had booked three persons on September 28, 2010, on the charge of rape. The accused were identified as Chhinder Singh alias Jaswinder Singh, Kuldip Singh alias Mamik and Billa Singh.

It was alleged that the accused, who were on motorcycle, had kidnapped the girl from the village when she was going to meet one of her friends in the village. The accused took the girl to a field and raped her.

Announcing the punishment, the judge decreed that the crime committed by the accused was utterly shocking. Thus, it deserved an exemplary punishment.
