Increase in petrol price
Badal wants Centre to withdraw hike
SP Sharma/TNS

Mehal Kalan (Barnala) November 4
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today lambasted the Congress-led UPA government for increasing the price of petrol by Rs. 1.82 per litre and demanded the immediate withdrawal of this hike which he said was unnecessary.

Speaking at a Sangat Darshan programme here, Badal said the sixth hike in quick succession within a year would hit the economy badly. He accused the UPA government of trying to benefit the private oil barons by recklessly recommending the hike in the price of petroleum products without showing the least concern for the common man.

Badal asserted that rather than hastily increasing the price of petrol, the UPA government should have taken an initiative to build consensus by discussing the issue with all the political parties.

He said that the totally unwarranted hike in petrol price would not only break the back of the common man who is already suffering but will also unleash fresh inflationary trends which in turn would dampen the economy and further slow down the growth rate.

Badal lamented that the spiralling inflation had already touched the double digits and was beyond the control of the UPA government despite its hollow assertion of controlling it.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that reports of the Centre's plan to hike the price of diesel and LPG would further hit the common man.

He said that former Chief Minister Surjeet Singh Barnala and PPP President Manpreet Singh Badal would never succeed in misleading the people. Their "Sanjha Morcha" would meet the same fate as that of the Panthic Morcha, he added.

Referring to the "dismal" performance of the Congress party during its previous tenure as compared to unprecedented development during the present regime of the SAD-BJP, Badal said that it would meet the same fate as the party faced the worst ever debacle in the recently concluded Hisar by-election in Haryana. This was perhaps for the first time in the political history of the country that the official candidate of the ruling Congress failed to save even his security deposit, Badal added.

He said that the federal structure of the country should be restored and the states given more financial power and equitable share in the resources.

The Chief Minister also announced sub-tehsil status for Mehal Kalan and disbursed a grant of Rs 9.14 crores for the execution of various ongoing development works in 75 villages of the area.

Liquor quota scam surfaces in Moga
Kulwinder Sandhu/TNS

Moga, November 4
An alleged scam in issuing permits of additional quota of country-made liquor without depositing the excise duty has come to light. A woman office executive has been suspended by the Excise Department.

Confirming this, A. Venu Prasad, Excise Commissioner, revealed that he ordered a random checking in the districts in view of the modus operandi adopted at Moga in the scam. "I have asked Param Pal Singh, deputy excise and taxation commissioner, to hold an inquiry and report to his office for further action,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hardeep Bhamra, assistant excise and taxation commissioner of Moga revealed that an office executive posted here issued five liquor permits of L-13 pertaining to additional quota in the name of H & H Wines, Bathinda, a firm running liquor shops in Moga, without depositing the excise duty.

Instead of handing over these permits to H & H Wines, they were handed over to a liquor contractor of Bilaspur who is a local leader of the Congress for lifting the issued quota of liquor illegally from the distilleries. "I got information a few days back and stopped the lifting of liquor from the distilleries to prevent revenue loss. The permits have been seized and the office executive suspended,” she said.

When asked about the role of excise and taxation officer who signed the permits, Bhamra said the office executive used the login and password of the ETO and the inspector concerned, given to her for routine work, from her computer terminal to enter online details of the issued quota and also managed to get the signatures of the ETO in good faith, she said.

The ETO, Jagtar Singh, claimed that he even made written objections on the application of H & H Wines demanding additional quota which is on record. "In the rush of work, the office executive managed to get my signature in good faith,” he said.

Interestingly, these permits were issued on October 24 but the contractors did not purchase the issued liquor quota till October 29 raising doubts on whether they were 'sold' to other contractors who exceeded their limits. "I have stopped this practice asking officials to take appropriate action,” said the excise commissioner.

The suspended office executive could not be contacted.
