For the second time this year, the UT police has invited the wrath of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the UT Administration yesterday following the failure of the Chandigarh Police to file a reply in the high-profile case of the sale of bullet-proof vehicles to a group of gangsters.

‘Princess’, accused were known to one another

A day after the UT police recovered the missing princess and arrested the accused, Inderjit Malik, for her kidnapping, the police confirmed that the two were known to one another for the past over a year.

Sec 144 in force around exam centres
Panchkula, November 4
Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Chaudhary has imposed Section 144 of the CrPc in areas around examination centres in the district where the written examination of the Haryana Teachers Eligibility Test will be conducted by the Haryana Education Board on November 5 and 6.

The Punjab transport department will hold a special meeting tomorrow to sort out the issue of the Mohali transport office not allowing registration of vehicles purchased by Mohali residents from Chandigarh-based car dealers.

Heaps of garbage in vacant plots, potholed roads, ill-maintained parks and non-functional streetlights dot Ward 1 at Baltana in Zirakpur. Roads in the ward have practically been reduced to streets of cobbled stones. In some areas, roads are yet to be laid though houses have been constructed decades back.

Police week to be observed from November 7

The UT police is all set to observe the Chandigarh Police week from November 7 to 12 with the aim to solicit public cooperation and redress grievances of the general public. It is all set to revive the ‘mashaal parade’ this time.

Topographical survey gets going

To complete the long-awaited detailed project report (DPR) for the tricity’s ambitious Metro rail project, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has started the topographical survey for the 33-km route. After completing the soil and rock testing, the corporation started the topographical survey recently.

PEC ‘Ruffriders’ design space-efficient vehicle
PEC students with ‘Moonbuggy’ in Chandigarh. Chandigarh, November 4
A team of six students of production engineering of PEC University have designed and manufactured “Moonbuggy”, a vehicle that is human powered, has a seat for two and can be driven at the top speed of 70 km per hour in spite of the rough terrain. The vehicle is named Moonbuggy, as it is developed to be driven on moon.

A criminal complaint was filed against Digvijay Singh, general secretary of All-India Congress Committee (AICC), in a local court here today. The complaint was filed for defaming the Rashtriya Swyam Sewak (RSS) Sangh.

HC notice on liquor vends in green belts
Mohali, November 4
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, the Excise and Taxation Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner and the Chief Administrator, GMADA, for November 18 on a petition moved by former councillor Kuljeet Singh Bedi over nuisance created by liquor vends operating from green belts.

2-day police remand for Walia
Mohali, November 4
The owner of Commando Caterers, Kamaljit Singh Walia, who was arrested by the Punjab Vigilance on Tuesday, was remanded in two more days of police custody by a local court today. He was produced in the court late in the evening. Soon after he was brought out of the vehicle at the court premises, Walia started shouting that the vigilance was going to get him killed and was not allowing his medical examination done on time. He alleged that the vigilance was harassing him.

Witness deposes in court
Chandigarh, November 4
A prosecution witness deposed before a local court in connection with the rape-on-wheels case here yesterday. The case had been filed against former UT Home Secretary and top Haryana-cadre IAS officer NK Jain and others. Defence counsel Ravindra Pandit said a UT police official who had done the “jama talashi” (the report about the recovery of any belongings of the accused person) recorded his statement before the court.

Robbers run out of luck
Panchkula/Zirakpur, November 4
Three youths robbed a shopkeeper of Rs 23,000 at gunpoint late night here yesterday. However after committing the crime, their bike rammed into a cart, leaving two of them injured. They were later arrested from the scene. Their third accomplice, however, fled the scene.

5 held in honour killing case
Mohali, November 4
In a one-year-old case of honour killing, the crime branch of the Punjab Police today arrested five persons accused of murdering Amandeep Singh, a resident of Halwara, in cold blood. To pass off the killing as an accident, the accused had dumped the victim’s body on the road and driven a Tata Sumo over it.

While Tarrannum Handa of Delhi defeated Riya Bhatia, also from Delhi, to bag the women’s title.In the men’s final, Kinshuk defeated Yogesh in three sets 6-7(4), 6-4 and 6-4, while Tarrannum defeated Riya Bhatia 6-2 and 6-1.
