Chandigarh, November 4 The petition was filed by Arvind Thakur of the Global Human Rights Council (GHRC). In the petition it was stated that special tracks were constructed alongside all important roads in the city after spending crores of rupees and felling around 2,000 trees to create space for them. However, cyclists and rickshaw-pullers were not using the tracks. It was further stated that the UT administration had never thought about the right use of these tracks. Also, several tracks in the city were in poor shape. The petitioners had demanded that the administration should take measures to ensure proper utilisation of these tracks. |

Plaint filed against Digvijay
Chandigarh, November 4 The complainant, Arvind Thakur, who is a lawyer, said Digvijay Singh, while talking to the media in New Delhi on October 28, had intentionally defamed the sangh by terming it “an organisation of terrorists”. The complainant said as the news item, printed in a daily newspaper, was read in the Bar room of the district court here, the court had the territorial jurisdiction to try and decide the complaint. The court has admitted the complaint and scheduled it for evidence process on February 9 next year. |

HC notice on liquor vends in green belts
Mohali, November 4 These vends, supposed to be located at a distance of 30 feet from the road, are located right on the edge of main roads and traffic lights. Bedi had stated that 20 such liquor vends were being run from green belts. Since 1998, the authorities have been giving land to liquor vends at concessional rates. The liquor vends have been provided land at a monthly rate of Rs 30 per sq yd, even though it was a commercial activity that should be run from an SCO, SCF or Industrial Area, Bedi had prayed before the court. |

2-day police remand for Walia
Mohali, November 4 While producing Walia in the court, the vigilance officials accompanying him also misbehaved with certain mediapersons present on the court premises. Walia was arrested for allegedly accepting bribe on behalf of a government official and preparing fake documents. A case was registered against Walia under Sections 420, 467 and 471 of the IPC and under the relevant Sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Kamaljit Singh’s family had earlier alleged that he had filed a police complaint against BIS Chahal, former media adviser to Capt Amarinder Singh, but later withdrew it. Owing to this, the SAD government had allegedly been harassing Kamaljit Singh. |

Robbers run out of luck
Panchkula/Zirakpur, November 4 The incident took place around 11 pm, when Sham Lal and Prem Swarup of Sector 12-A were returning from their shop in Zirakpur and were waylaid by the three, who robbed their victims of money. As the robbers tried to flee on a motorcycle towards
Zirakpur, their bike rammed into a cart. Two of them — Sarbjit Singh, alias
Sabi, a resident of Preet Colony, and Vikramjit Singh, alias Vicky — were injured and shifted to the GMCH-32,
Chandigarh. The police also recovered a .315 bore revolver with a live cartridge and
Zirakpur SHO Yogi Raj said Sarabjit had criminal background and was facing several criminal cases. Vikramjit Singh was an employee of the Punjab Police, posted at the police headquarters in the wireless department. |

5 held in honour killing case
Mohali, November 4 Though the Halwara police had registered a case of causing death due to negligent driving, the case was referred to the ADGP (crime) for investigation when the victim’s father alleged that it was a murder. SSP Kanwar Vijay Pratap Singh said the crime branch, after investigating the case, had registered a case of murder against 18 persons. Those arrested — Chamakaur Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Harbans Singh, Harjit Singh and Dhanwant Singh — would be produced in court tomorrow. Sources said the victim was done to death as he had an affair with a girl from the accused family. |

Kinshuk powers his way to title
Chandigarh, November 4 While Tarrannum Handa of Delhi defeated Riya Bhatia, also from Delhi, to bag the women’s title. In the men’s final, Kinshuk defeated Yogesh in three sets 6-7(4), 6-4 and 6-4, while Tarrannum defeated Riya Bhatia 6-2 and 6-1. On the other hand, the pair of Sachin Kumar and Kinshuk Sharma defeated Anwar Shahul of Karnataka and Rynold Timothy of Kerala 6-4 and 7-5 to win the doubles title. Police club, AKSIPS-41 register victories
Chandigarh, November 4 In the first match of the senior category, the visiting team of Rurka Kalan went down against Chandigarh Police team, captained by Munish Kumar by 1-0. After a goal-less first half, Gagandeep put Chandigarh team in the driver’s seat in the 58th minute of the game. Kamalpreet Singh of Youth Football Club, Rurka Kalan, was declared man of the match. In the match of the junior section, Ajit Karam Singh School, Sector 41, defeated Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary School by 2-0. Mohit of Ajit Karam Singh School opened the account in the 30th minute, while Mohit doubled the lead in the 32nd minute. Karan Dadhwal of Moti Ram Arya Senior Secondary School was declared man of the match. |

Haryana to boost sports with monthly scholarship
Panchkula, November 4 A spokesman of the department said under the scheme, all boys and girls of both urban and rural areas between the age group of 8-19 years could register on the department website by tomorrow. Apart from the government schools, boys and girls of recognised and private schools could also apply under the scheme, he added. Under SPAT, boys and girls of 8-14 years attaining 75 per cent marks in the state level competitions would be given a scholarship of Rs 1,500 per month while Rs 2,000 per month would be given as scholarship to boys and girls between the age group of 15-19 years.—TNS |
