Block samiti chief booked for thrashing Cong workers

The Majtiha road police has booked a number of Akali workers, including a block samiti chairman in connection with the thrashing of Congress activists who were admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital here a couple of days ago.

Industrial workers stage demonstration
Hoshiarpur, October 14
Hundreds of workers from various industrial units located at Focal Point, Phagwara, staged a demonstration and raised slogans against the Punjab Government and Punjab Police here today. The workers were led by CPI leader Bhavneshver Pandey, alias Ram Babu, and a shopkeeper of Bheem Nagar, Pankaj Misra.

Army sets up sewage plant
Pathankot, October 14
In a unique experiment, the army personnel at the Mamun cantonment here have installed a mini-sewage plant which will provide treated water to the nearby Gurj Sports Complex and Environmental Park.

Teachers association to approach Chancellor

Even as the standoff between the Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers and the Vice Chancellor continues for the eighth day today, the GND varsity teachers association has decided to approach Shivraj Patil, the Governor of the state, also the Chancellor of the university.

Block samiti chief booked for thrashing Cong workers

Amritsar, October 14
The Majtiha road police has booked a number of Akali workers, including a block samiti chairman in connection with the thrashing of Congress activists who were admitted to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital here a couple of days ago.

The police has registered a case under Sections 341, 148, 149, 506 and 323 of the IPC on the statement of Baldev Singh, one of the person who was injured during the attack.

Those booked include Sarabjit Singh Lodhi Gujjar, chairman, block samiti, Shera, Bachattar Singh, Bahal Singh, sarpanch, Sardool Singh, Nawab Singh, Sukhchain Singh, Vicky and 25 other unidentified persons.

It is pertinent to mention here that several Akali workers barged into Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where their accomplices who were injured during a clash at Lodhi Gujjar village were admitted.

Sukhbinder Singh Sukh Sarkaria, Congress MLA from Rajasansi, had threatened to launch an agitation against the police department if it failed to register a case and take action against the accused persons.

 Industrial workers stage demonstration

Hoshiarpur, October 14
Hundreds of workers from various industrial units located at Focal Point, Phagwara, staged a demonstration and raised slogans against the Punjab Government and Punjab Police here today. The workers were led by CPI leader Bhavneshver Pandey, alias Ram Babu, and a shopkeeper of Bheem Nagar, Pankaj Misra.

The agitated workers carried the body of Gautam Rai (30) and placed it in front the mortuary of the Civil Hospital here and raised slogans against the administration.

According to the police, Gautam Rai, who was working in an industry at Focal Point, had left for to his house after completing his duty last night. His body was found on the way to his house in this morning.

It was suspected that some robbers assaulted him with sharp-edged weapons for snatching some valuables from him. Rs 300 and a mobile phone of the deceased, Gautam Rai, were missing.

Ram Babu and Pankaj Misra told mediapersons that during night hours none was safe in the area. Some masked robbers used to wander in the Focal Point area and Bheem Nagar.

On seeing a person alone, they assaulted him and snatched his valuables.

Many such incidents had been brought into the notice of the police, but it had failed to protect the inhabitants and take any action against the robbers.

They demanded setting up of a police post in the area to check the activities of unscrupulous elements.

Later, the police authorities intervened and on their assurance that their lives and properties would be protected on priority basis, they ended their demonstration.

After postmortem, the police handed over the body of Gautam Rai to his relatives.

 Army sets up sewage plant

Pathankot, October 14
In a unique experiment, the army personnel at the Mamun cantonment here have installed a mini-sewage plant which will provide treated water to the nearby Gurj Sports Complex and Environmental Park.

This initiative has been undertaken by the cantonment authorities as a part of the ongoing ‘Green Mamun’ drive in which nearly 600 army personnel and their families were given tips on how to keep the area clean.

The project, which is a brainchild of Major General G Sankaranarayanan, General Officer Commanding of Gurj Division, also saw senior army personnel delivering lectures on how to maintain ecological balance in and around the cantonment area.

Speaking on the occasion, Sankaranarayanan said, “The drive has been launched for the members of Mamun cantonment in particular and the residents of Pathankot in general. Emphasis is also given on solid waste management, elimination of carbon imprint, energy conservation and making the cantonment a greener place than what it is now.”

 Teachers association to approach Chancellor

Even as the standoff between the Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers and the Vice Chancellor continues for the eighth day today, the GND varsity teachers association has decided to approach Shivraj Patil, the Governor of the state, also the Chancellor of the university. “Since the Vice Chancellor has stopped talking to us to resolve the issue and break the deadlock, we have decided to urge the Chancellor to intervene in the matter,” said Dr Balwinder Singh, president of the association.

“We are preparing a detailed document regarding the violations that have occurred in the university which would be put forward for the consideration of the Chancellor by next week. Hopefully, his mediation would help to diffuse the present situation and would result in direction to the VC for fulfilling genuine demands of the teachers,” he said.

Meanwhile, the teachers held a dharna outside the VC office and threatened to intensify the agitation. “However, since it is examination time, we don’t want students to suffer,” said Dr Balwinder Singh.
