Dehradun, September 21
In protest against a large-scale corruption in the state, workers of the Indian Youth Congress held a procession here today. Led by Anand Singh Rawat, president of the Youth Congress, they gathered at Parade Ground and marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence.

However, the police stopped them at Hathibarkala, a km ahead of the Chief Minister’s residence, where it had a mild skirmish with the protesters. The police had to use water cannons to stop the protesters from crossing barricades.

Addressing the protesters, the All-India Youth Congress general secretary, Gulam Rasol, said the youth of the state had high hopes from the Congress.

Chakrata MLA from Congress Pritam Singh said the party was hopeful of returning to power in the state. He alleged that the state government had crossed all limits of corruption and the people of the state were not happy with it.

He alleged that in spite of concentrating on development works, the state government was busy bringing in a change in the leadership. He alleged that the state BJP government had also committed irregularities in the Kumbh Mela, the South Asian Federation Winter Games and the allotment of hydroelectric projects.

Anand Singh Rawat, Youth Congress president, appealed to the workers to “expose” the BJP government. He said people should be made aware of “corrupt” activities of the government.

The protesting workers also submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister to the authorities, expressing the concerns of the youth of the state. Through the memorandum, they demanded recruitments in the police, education and other departments. The memorandum also demanded unemployment allowance for the jobless youth.

Shortage of radiologists at Doon hospital (female)

Dehradun, September 21
The provision of free ante natal care (ANC) check-up for expectant mothers (both BPL and non-BPL) under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) has increased the work load on the lone radiologist at Doon District (female) Hospital.

Since July, when the scheme that promotes safe motherhood was launched, there has been a good response with expectant mothers coming frequently for a free check-up. It has also compelled the hospital to demand the appointment of one more radiologist.

The shortage of radiologists exists even at Doon District Hospital where against the requirement of four radiologists, only two are working.

At Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Coronation Hospital too, only one radiologist is working. However, at the Doon (Female) hospital, the condition has worsened with the introduction of the new scheme.

“Since the ANCs became free, there has been a surge in abdominal examination through ultrasound. Ideally, three ANCs are good enough, but we are quite liberal here. As ultrasound is a safe technique, almost all expectant mothers, who complain about loss of foetal movement or other complications, are sent for ultrasound examination. But it has also increased the workload of the radiologist who now has to attend around 60-70 cases in a day, besides contributing at Doon (male) hospital whenever one of the radiologists is on leave,” said Dr Deepa Sharma, Chief Medical Superintendent, Doon (female) hospital.

However, at Mahant Indresh Hospital and Himalayan Hospital Trust (HIHT) Jolly Grant, Rishikesh, besides the ultrasound, the Doppler technique is also used to ascertain the movement of foetus.

“Ideally a protocol should be in place for recommending ultrasound examination, other techniques like the Doppler effect technique-based equipments also are reliable,” said Dr Yatinder Singh, Radiologist, Doon (female) hospital.

Drinking Water Scheme
Dug-up land nightmare for residents
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, September 21
Residents here are facing a lot of trouble due to the repair works that have been pending since long. Though the state government has launched the last phase of the Asian Development Bank-funded drinking water scheme in the city, residents of various localities are facing a lot of problem in the first phase itself.

The repair works on the damaged roads in the posh areas like Dalanwala, where a private company laid down drinking water pipelines, has hit the roadblock, which in turn is compounding the problems of the residents.

The repair work on the streets that have been excavated to lay down the pipes is already going at a snail’s pace and the company has given another nightmare to the residents by once again digging up deep holes in different areas for testing but failed to fill them up earlier this month.

The residents are angry due to the department’s ignorance. It is becoming more difficult for them as they need to be extra alert as their children usually play outside their homes due to the absence of any playground or a park in the whole locality.

It is virtually terrifying, said Mona Chawla, a resident of Mohini Road, in front of whose house the land has been dug up for testing the water supply. “I am very scared when my son plays out of our house as the dug-up hole is lying open,” she told The Tribune and added, “I have also lodged a complaint with the local authorities.”

Prashant, Mona’s neighbour, too had a harrowing time due to this hole. His car was badly damaged recently when it entrenched into the gap. “The streetlights are not working and due to the dark my car fell in the hole,” he said.

“When the government undertakes any development work, it should also take care about the convenience of the residents of the area,” said Srishti Sharma.

Sources affirmed that the state government is spending nearly Rs 200-300 crore for laying drinking water pipelines in the area through an ADB-funded project.

Peyjal Minister Prakash Pant he said he had already instructed the department to undertake the repair work as early as possible.

Chief Secretary has last week given the instructions to the Urban Development Department to undertake the last phase of the scheme in Dehradun.
