Srinivasan is bad news for PCA

This was proven in no uncertain manner when one the first few things the new BCCI president did was to grant a one-year extension to Srikkanth — a move that prompted many senior former players (including Kapil Dev and Sourav Ganguly) to come out in the open and say that perhaps it might have been a better idea for Srikkanth to have moved on to other things in life.

Srinivasan is bad news for PCA
Sunil Narula

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 21
All this while, we were right in assuming that Kris Srikkanth is N. Srinivasan’s man.

While Srikkanth’s extension was expected, what came as a surprise was the sudden catapulting of Mohinder Amarnath into the fray as the North Zone selector replacing Yashpal Sharma. In his time, Amaranth has been a great player, has been the coach of teams like Bangladesh, Morocco, and Rajasthan and so on but for more than 30 years now, he has been living in Mumbai. Perhaps he is more qualified to become the West Zone selector.

But that’s another matter. Technically, of course, Amaranth belongs to North Zone having played Ranji Trophy for Punjab and Delhi (actually, he played for Baroda also). And you have to hand it to Srinivasan for getting hold of a player of repute for the selection panel.

But here too Punjab’s loss has been Amarnath’s gain. According to insiders, Punjab’s Vikram Rathour’s name had been put forth for the North selector’s job (PCA had recommended him). But it’s no secret that Srinivasan is absolutely anti-PCA. I.S. Bindra had openly sided with Lalit Modi (Srinivasan’s pet aversion) last year at the IPL governing council meeting held to oust Modi. Now Srinivasan wants to have nothing to do with the PCA. So the DDCA president was approached to recommend Amarnath’s name from North Zone and the rest is history.

Even M.P. Pandove, who had earlier been promised the post of secretary by Srinivasan, had to pay the price of his closeness with Bindra. Pandove had been told (about six months ago) to distance himself from Bindra if he wanted the coveted BCCI post. But Pandove found himself between a rock and a hard place as he could not alienate Bindra and (much as he wanted to) he could not please Srinivasan. Net result -- Pandove, who was expecting to become secretary, now has to content himself with just a place on the IPL governing council.

Those in the know of things also predict good things for Himachal cricket now with Anurag Thakur firmly in place as the board’s joint-secretary. More matches are likely to go to Dharamsala (at the expense of PCA) and more under-19 players from Himachal are likely to get a look-in (again at the expense of PCA) with Thakur also being the convener and North Zone selector in the junior cricket committee. (Thakur again is a close Srinivasan confidant).

Those who know him up close suggest that Srinivasan is a man who does not forget things in a hurry and gets even with people who have rubbed him the wrong way. Bindra antagonised Srinivasan by openly supporting Modi. But it’s the PCA (as a whole) that has to face the wrath of the new president.

ICC rejects Sachin’s proposal for Odis

Colombo, September 21
The ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat on Wednesday shot down Sachin Tendulkar's proposed changes in the ODI format making it a four innings 25-over-affair rather than current 50-over format.

"There is no need to change the format," Lorgat told reporters at a breakfast interaction.

Tendulkar, a prolific run-scorer in ODIs with over 18,000 runs, 48 centuries and 95 half centuries had written a letter to Lorgat, seeking a radical switch from two 50-over innings to four phased out innings of 25 overs each - method tried in Australian domestic cricket.

"We did receive a written proposal from Sachin, but that was a long time back. I myself have spoken to him many times about it, the last one as recent as during the World Cup in April. The success of the tournament showed that the 50-over format was sound in health and there was no need for dramatic changes," Lorgat added.

He further added," The executive board meeting after the World Cup decided that the present format was doing well. That has not changed," Lorgat stressed.

The senior batsman had argued that four alternate innings of 25 overs would be a fair way to balance the advantage gained by the team which won the toss in conditions such as bad weather, sub-quality pitches which historically had proven that a match can virtually be decided by the toss of a coin.

Lorgat also commented on another point of contention with India -the DRS. He thought the system was working well despite Indian dislike towards it.

"Even the best of umpires have a success rate of 95 per cent. We see a five per cent improvement because of the UDRS while there can be 1 per cent margin for error. The question is if we want to sacrifice 5 per cent for 1 per cent?," Lorgat questioned. — PTI

Sandeep, Sardar get lifeline as HI lifts ban on duo

New Delhi, September 21
Ace drag-flicker Sandeep Singh and star midfielder Sardar Singh were handed a lifeline after Hockey India today decided to lift the two-year ban imposed on them for indiscipline, saying the two players were given "a last chance" to make amends for their mistakes.

HI executive director Anupam Ghulati said the decision to revoke the ban was taken after the two players "expressed unconditional regret" for their indiscipinary acts before the Appeals Committee.

"Sandeep and Sardar appeared before the Appeals Committee today and expressed their unconditional regret. So keeping in view their age, performance and future potential the committee decided to revoke the ban," Ghulati told PTI.

"But both the players have given in writting that if they are again found guilty of any misconduct in future the two-year ban can be re-imposed on them," he said.

Both Sandeep and Sardar were banned for two years by HI's disciplinary committee for repeatedly indulging in indiciplinary acts after they quit midway the national camp in Bangalore last month ahead of the Asian Champions Trophy, citing personal reasons.

The two players were, however, appealed against the ban last week after HI gave them 30 days' time to do so.

The HI official added that now with the ban revoked, both Sandeep and Sardar has been asked to join the ongoing national camp in Bangalore with immediate effect.

Ghulati, however, made it clear that the duo's selection in the Indian team for the four-nation nine-a-side Super Series tournament in Perth, Australia in October is subject to their fitness and performance in the selection trials scheduled to be held in Bangalore on September 26. — PTI

Federation Cup
East Bengal in semifinal

Kolkata, September 21
Defending champions East Bengal booked their semifinal berth after a scrappy 1-0 victory over Dempo in their group C fixture of the 33rd Federation Cup here today.

On a rain-soaked evening, East Bengal had mispasses galore and poor finishing in the opening session but made amends after the break with Robin Singh scoring the match-winner in the 68th minute at the floodlit Yuba Bharati Krirangan.

The Kolkata giants were, however, lucky to have won the match as the referee Pratap Singh overlooked a clear penalty in favour of Dempo.

Australian recruit Tolgay Ozbey, who had set up the match-winner for East Bengal, handled the ball inside the box in the first minute of the injury time and it was clear penalty but Pratap chose to overlook it.

The match saw instances of poor refereeing on several occasions. The win meant East Bengal finished with seven points to top group C, reducing the next match between Pune FC and Mohammedan Sporting an inconsequential affair.

Tonga beat Japan 31-18

Whangarei, September 21
Tonga beat Japan 31-18 in an open, entertaining and error-ridden clash on Wednesday to keep alive their slim hopes of reaching the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals for the first time.

Tonga's hulking forward pack enjoyed total dominance during scrum time and the breakdown proved a fruitful source of possession as their obvious physical advantage proved too much at the Northland Events Centre.

Both sides ran in three tries but it was the kicking of flyhalf Kurt Morath that proved the difference as, despite a lack of discipline and poor decision-making in the team, his 16 points with the boot helped overcome the Pacific Nations champions.

Tonga must now beat France in their final game to have any chance of reaching the last eight. — Reuters
