Kochi thrown out of IPL
l BCCI terminates team for breach of terms
l Had failed to furnish bank guarantee for 2011

Mumbai, September 19
Cracking the whip, the BCCI on Monday terminated the contract of IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala for non-payment of bank guarantee, thus abruptly ending the controversial Kerala team's association with the cash-rich league after just one year.

The decision to terminate Kochi franchise was taken at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting on Monday, in which the new office bearers of the board were also elected.

"Because of the irremediable breach committed by the Kochi franchise, the BCCI has decided to encash the bank guarantee in their possession and also terminate the franchise," new BCCI president N Srinivasan told reporters after the AGM.

Asked if the BCCI would reconsider its decision and give the franchise a chance to return, Srinivasan bluntly rejected such a suggestion.

"No, we have terminated the franchise because the breach is not capable of being remedied," he clarified.

The consortium, which was mired in a bitter ownership dispute since its very inception, defaulted on a Rs 156 crore annual payment it was to make as bank guarantee despite reported reminders from the IPL authorities.

The franchise, which was bought for Rs 1,550 crore, was supposed to make the yearly payment for the next 10 years.

Kochi's termination means the 10-team tournament would be reduced to nine.

Srinivasan said any decision to conduct fresh auction for a new franchise would be taken by the Rajiv Shukla-led IPL Governing Council. Shukla was named as the new IPL chairman on Monday, succeeding Chirayu Amin.

Incidentally, the BCCI's working committee had last year rejected demands from Kochi and the Pune Warriors for a reduction in their franchisee fees.

The two new franchises, which made their debut this year, had sought a 25 per cent waiver on the grounds that the BCCI had stated in the bidding document that each team would play 18 league matches in a season but the schedule was later reduced to 14 matches per team.

Led by Mahela Jayawardene, Kochi has also been hitting the headlines due to its owners' reported desire to shift the team's base to Ahmedabad.

Kochi had faced the prospect of being axed even last year when the BCCI had questioned its shareholding patterns but the matter was later settled after agreement between various owners. — PTI

BCCI to oppose DRS at ICC meet

Mumbai, September 19
Raising the ante against the controversial Decision Review System in the aftermath of the incidents on the recent England tour, the Cricket Board decided to oppose the 'Hot Spot' technology too along with the ball tracking system which it has consistently been against.

"We were extremely reluctant to implement the DRS and had no belief in the ball tracking system. BCCI is not averse to technology and agreed to a minimum usage of DRS including 'Hot Spot' at the last ICC meeting in Hong Kong," said N Srinivasan after taking over the reins of the BCCI from Shashank Manohar on Monday.

"We were under the impression that 'Hot Spot' was very good. It is not necessary for me to dwell on the accuracy of 'Hot Spot". It was there for everybody to see.

"The BCCI will raise this issue at the next ICC meeting. We want to revisit it as we feel 'Hot Spot' is insufficient technology and therefore we would request (ICC) that it be revised. This is the position we will take", said Srinivasan at the media conference after the Board's 82nd AGM where he took over as its president.

"At the last meeting Mr Manohar had opposed DRS before laying down office and at the next meeting I will do it," he added.

The BCCI's ire on DRS has increased following the controversial dismissals of India's mainstay on the tour, Rahul Dravid, through 'Hot Spot'.

In an another incident, VVS Laxman was declared not out by this technology only for former England captain Michael Vaughan to question the batsman's integrity by accusing him of having used Vaseline on the bat's edges to beat 'Hot Spot' technology.

At the AGM, Sanjay Jagdale of MPCA, Himachal Pradesh's Anurag Thakur and Maharashtra's Ajay Shirke were elected unopposed as secretary, joint secretary and treasurer respectively of the country's richest sports body.

Two new vice presidents - Chitrak Mitra and Sudhir Dabir representing East and Central zones - were also elected without any fight along with Arun Jaitley (North), Shivlal Yadav (South) and Niranjan Shah (West).

The senior selection panel was also recast with 1983 World Cup hero Mohinder Amarnath being the lone new face in the five-man committee replacing Yashpal Sharma from North Zone.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, of South, would continue to be its chairman while three other committee members - Surendra Bhave (West), Narendra Hirwani (Central) and Raja Venkat (East) were also re-appointed for one more year.

The indications are that Amarnath, son of former India skipper Lala, would take over as the chairman of the panel when Srikkanth's term ends next September along with those of the other three panel members.

Amarnath's place in the IPL Governing Council was taken by outgoing treasurer M P Pandove, a former first class cricketer, while Ravi Shastri would remain as the second cricketer in the BCCI sub-committee which would be headed by Rajiv Shukla, Srinivasan said.

Srinivasan also said that Sunil Gavaskar had stepped down from the chairmanship of the Technical Committee and would be replaced by another former India skipper Sourav Ganguly after getting his consent to accept the post. — PTI

No England series post mortem: BCCI

Mumbai, September 19
New BCCI president N Srinivasan today ruled out any post mortem of the Indian team's dismal tour of England in which the side led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni failed to win a single international match.

"The tour did not go as planned. We did not have our best team from the beginning. A lot of players were injured. We have faith in the team. There is no reason why we can't get back (no. 1 spot) there. We have not formed any committee (to do a post moretem)," said

Srinivasan at the conclusion of the Board's 82nd AGM today. The Indian squad was whitewashed 0-4 by England in the Test rubber and lost the ODI series 0-3, besides losing the lone T20 clash against the hosts.

"Our cricketers have achieved whatever there was to achieve. Two months ago they were heroes having won the World Cup, they were the number one Test team. They had one bad series. (Now) they need our support," he said.

Srinivasan did not agree with the view that excess of cricket affected the team's performance. "BCCI does not support the view of too much cricket, because excepting a few not all play all the three formats and those who did were not the ones who were injured.

"We have taken stock of the cricket being played around the world and there is not much difference between other teams. Yes we did not do well but we have belief in the team, they will bounce back," he declared.

Srinivasan also dismissed suggestions that the BCCI lacked a proper injury management system. "We have excellent facilities at the NCA (Bangalore), as good as anywhere in the world. All players, including the Ranji players have access to it for rehabilitation.

"We have also instructed the selectors not to choose any player unless the NCA has cleared them. Beyond that if players are injured in the field or while playing, there is little that we can do," he said. "We have made it clear to the physios, to the team and selectors that we want transparency as far as injury is concerned. In the last three years there has been substantial improvement," he added. — PTI

‘We tried to win in England more than in World Cup’

Chennai, September 19
Back from a disastrous tour of England, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin today said that the Test series loss had left the India team low in confidence but the side still "fought to win every match even more than it had during the World Cup".

"To be frank, the confidence level was low. But I can say that the team fought to win every match even more than it had during the World Cup. Everybody competed fiercely," said Ashwin. "But more than the England players, we had to compete with a lot of other factors, such as rain, the wicket...the outfield became very wet after the rains.

"We were very confident of taking them on, but certain things didn't go our way. Let's just say luck didn't work in our favour," he added. Ashwin admitted that the Indian team has been playing a lot of cricket but said that as professionals it is the responsibility of the players to manage the workload.

"I joined the Indian team only from the ODI series, so I've been away for about 45 days. I don't think there is much point in discussing the fatigue factor. We're all professional cricketers, so we can't really complain. "Definitely a lot of cricket is being played, but it's part and parcel of the game. If you give me a month off, there's no guarantee that I won't get injured in that time span. So, it's completely about how you look after yourself, how you manage yourself," he said. — PTI

Real slump at Levante

Madrid, September 19
Ten-man Real Madrid crashed to a 1-0 defeat at modest Levante, a morale-sapping setback coming just 24 hours after bitter rivals Barcelona had staged an eight-goal masterclass against Osasuna.

Real rested Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil yesterday as they looked to maintain their 100 percent record and keep pace with leaders Valencia, who beat Sporting Gijon 1-0, and Real Betis, who defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-2, to keep up their own perfect starts.

But the loss left Jose Mourinho's side in fourth spot, three points behind Valencia and Betis, and one back from Barcelona.

Real had plenty of possession but Levante defended resolutely.

Kaka missed an early chance and Karim Benzema was a danger but Real's task became a lot harder following the dismissal of Sami Khedira for a second yellow card.

Ronaldo was brought on after the break but Real still were unable to create clear-cut chances and instead they were caught on the break through Arouna Kone who grabbed the only goal in the 68th minute.

"I think that while we had eleven against eleven we were fine and the opposition never went further than the halfway line," said Real coach Jose Mourinho.

"There are players at Madrid who have not adapted to foul play and are not comfortable with it. One of my players (Khedira) was to blame because he knew what was going to happen.

"However, at the same time we had a clear penalty which was not given and they should have had a player sent off. We should also have made more of the openings in the first half to win the match." — AFP
