Soon after the news of the blast, the Union Home Ministry issued a nationwide alert asking all states to step up vigil and take precautionary measures. The district police intensified surveillance in and around the city, including major towns and cities of the district. Besides deploying an additional police force in civil dress, the department has also laid traps at various strategic points. Cops have been deployed to keep a close watch on suspects and unclaimed goods at public places.

“We appeal to the general public to inform the police control room (phone no 100) in case they notice some un-identified objects, goods, luggage, toy or any suspected thing in their surroundings,” informed Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajpal Singh Sandhu.

Special police teams, along with dog squads, have been pressed in service of frisking suspects at the bus stand, railway station and other crowded places. The Government Railway Police (GRP) also swung into action and pulled up its shocks. A search operation was launched during which the cops frisked train passengers and their luggage both inside the trains and at the main gates of the Jalandhar City and Cantonment Railway stations.

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, September 7
A group of Congress councillors today gathered in the premises of Dr BR Ambedkar Administrative Complex of the Municipal Corporation and lodged a protest over its poor condition.

The Opposition councillors led by Jagdish Raj Raja claimed that the plaster from the walls of the institute building had started peeling off even from the building which came up just two years back. They further complained that to conceal the fact that the poor quality of material used for the same, the walls were being covered with tiles, raising the additional expenditure.

Councillors Kuljit Babbi and Rajinder Beri pointed towards numerous such spots in the institute from where plaster was coming off. They even showed numerous points from where false ceiling had started peeling off due to dampness or accumulation of water being discharged from AC vents. They said no attention was being paid to get the broken taps in the toilets repaired.

They rued that the visitors, especially those going to the third floor for house tax, water supply and birth and death registrar office, had to face a lot of problems due to the non-functional elevators. “Even the elderly and the disabled have been approaching us with the problem,” Beri rued. The councillors said they could not lodge a complaint with the Commissioner since he was away and would be available on Monday.

SE (B&R) Kulwinder Singh said the funds were being arranged for getting the building repaired.

Road leading to bus stand in dire straits
Punjab Roadways authorities claim development work to the tune of Rs 1 crore has been initiated

Jalandhar, September 7
Giving a tough time to the commuters, the stretch of the road leading to Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Inter State Bus Terminal from Garha area to Punjab State War Memorial has been in dire straits for the past more than ten years.

While the new bus stand was constructed on a Built Operate Transfer (BOT) basis four years ago, this road situated between the bus stand entrance and the Punjab Roadways workshop could never be reconstructed.

The road is completely broken with huge pot holes, bumpy rides and no drainage facility at all as a result of which the entire stretch remains blocked due to stagnant water. Since the flow of buses and heavy vehicles is more on this road, the condition has deteriorated even further.

Even the bus drivers, various Punjab Roadways union leaders and daily commuters criticise the state government for this apathy. "We usually avoid commuting from this road as one can fall bad in the huge potholes. To add to the chaos whether it rains or not, this road remains clogged with stagnant water all the time," said Harjeet Kaur a resident of Garha area.

Pardeep Kumar, a member of Punjab Transport Government Workers Union (AITUC) said it is due to the government's apathy that this road could never be constructed. "There is no one to look after this road, the authority of this road lies with the Punjab Roadways," he added.

It may be mentioned here that five years back, Punjab Roadways had made a proposal to the tune of Rs 25 lakh to construct this road as its condition was worsening. Budget estimates were made and preparations were also done to start the reconstruction work.

The project had to be shelved due to certain 'official reasons', source claim.
