Family robbed OF CASH, JEWELLeRY AT Gunpoint
Jalandhar, September 4 “They first tied hands of male members and then locked the women inside a room. The robbers conducted the entire operation at gunpoint,” the victims alleged. “Then they took away cash and jewellery.” The station house officer, Police Division No 1, Nirmal Singh, claimed Niranjan Das has moved an application alleging that some robbers entered his house and decamped with case and jewellery. He also has complained that some documents of certain properties were also stolen by the robbers. The SHO revealed that Niranjan Das had been lending money on interest to people. He further said during preliminary investigations, the police found that nobody could scale the boundary wall of the house as it was quite high. Moreover, there was no sign on the wall which suggested that the robbers had entered into the house through a different way, he claimed. Further investigation in this regard is on, claimed the SHO. |
This gurdwara makes kids ‘fly high’
Jalandhar, September 4 So, usually Sundays in the gurdwara turn out to be a gala day for children from adjoining villages and the city as the gurdwara management distributes toy aeroplanes to them. “Last time when I came here with my grandmother, I took home a white coloured small aeroplane. But this time I wanted a big one, which looks so real”, said Akashdeep Singh, a five-year-old. Such is the rush of offerings by the ‘foreign smitten’ residents that even the gurdwara management have almost lost count of the offerings of the winged beauties that land up in the gurdwara everyday. Talking to The Tribune, gurdwara manager Balbir Singh said, “As the offering of the toy replicas have been increasing, we keep distributing them among the children. And since on Sundays children turn in large number with their parents, we make it a point to give one toy aeroplane to every child”. He also said that it is a matter of faith among the people that they started offering toy aeroplanes as a way out to fulfil their long lasting desire of reaching abroad. “We cannot recall how it all started but yes the offerings and queries pertaining to this trend keep popping from every nook and corner of the world”, he quipped. Surprisingly, when asked as to what they would do with the aeroplane replicas, a majority of them came with prompt reply, “We will play with it”. But there were others who following in the footsteps of the devotees said, “Someday even we will fly abroad.” Simranjit Kaur, a 10-year-old girl, who also got the winged beauty, said, “My cousins told me that children get toy aeroplanes as gifts in this gurdwara. And today I also got one. It is pleasure getting a gift like this”. Even the parents of these children also expressed joy over receiving the toy aeroplanes from the gurdwara. “My son has already taken some five to six toy aeroplanes from the gurdwara. For the gurdwara management this might be a way of clearing the ample stock of these aeroplanes but it just makes children happy”, said Harwinder Kaur, a mother. |
Traffic police battles staff crunch
Jalandhar, September 3 Only 149 employees, against a sanctioned strength of 204, are controlling a heavy vehicular traffic in and around the city. Sources in the police revealed that there was no recruitment in the traffic police since 1984. The Assistance Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Diljinder Singh Dhillon, said, “We are facing an acute shortage of staff and require almost 1,000 more employees to regulate the traffic more efficiently.” As per an estimate by the department there are over 18,000 auto-rickshaws in the city (only 2,000 registered with the district transport office), while the number of four and two wheelers besides rickshaws and carts runs into lakhs. As per records, there are two inspectors, nine sub-inspectors, 12 assistant sub-inspectors, 73 head constables, six constables, one SPO and 46 home guard jawans, who control traffic in the city and surrounding areas. Some of the cops are often deputed on the VIP routes and engaged in providing evidences in different court cases. They have to perform duties with the pilot vehicles for escorting the VVIPs, the VIPs and politicians passing through the city daily. These men are overworked and have to perform their duties at various intersections on the GT Road irrespective of odd weather either it rain, bone chilling cold of scorching heat. Moreover, they have also been given additional duties of daily policing and are associated with police stations, highly placed sources in the police revealed. |
Making a difference to society
Jalandhar, September 4 This Teacher’s Day, Jalandhar Tribune brings forth cases of four teachers, who belong to both worlds - whose jobs are more about passion and more about work. |
NIT aspirants allege they have
been denied seats
Jalandhar, September 4 These students had filed an application seeking relief based on the Supreme Court’s ruling in June 2008 (Ashok Kumar Thakur vs Union of India) in which the court had observed that “27 per cent is the upper limit for OBC reservation. Reasonable cut-off marks should be set so that standards of excellence can be created. The unfilled seats should revert to the general category.” Two of these students, seeking admissions in the M.Tech course, had filed an application asking for the conversion of the vacant OBC and Open Physically Handicapped (1) seat in the institute to the General category on July 25 since they were eligible for seats in the respective courses according to their waiting list position at that time. The rest of the candidates (one SC, one OBC and two general category candidates) filed their applications on August 10, August 23rd, August 23rd and the first week of August, respectively. The students said, “Despite the fact that our applications were pending with the university authorities, the Dean, Academics Programme, told us on August 1, 2011, to come at a later stage. When we met him on August 18, we were told that the admissions were closed but he was looking into the matter.” “Then four of us went to the Registrar on August 23 and submitted a letter with the latest SC judgment on the issue attached to it. The registrar promised to meet us on August 25, but nothing came out of it. We again went on August 29 and the registrar talked to the director regarding the matter. The final meeting happened with the Director on August 30 but the status quo remained,” the students said. In all, the six students presently seeking admissions are as follows: Civil engineering -2 (1 General, 1 SC), industrial and production engineering - 2 (General), Mechanical engineering - 2 (1 OBC and 1 general). While the availability of the following number of seats in the respective courses is confirmed - Civil engineering - 1 general, 2 SC; industrial and production engineering - 2 general, 2 OBC and mechanical engineering 1 OPH (open physically handicapped) which was to be converted to general, 2 OBC - the students say the number of total vacant seats might be more. The latest (August 18) SC ruling on the issue this year stated, “(Only) if OBC candidates possessing the minimum eligibility/qualifying marks are not available in the OBC merit list, the OBC seats shall be converted into general category seats.” “If the last date for admissions had expired, it should be extended till August 31 as a special case to enable admissions to the vacant OBC seats,” it stated further. The students lament, “While some of us are trying to get admissions elsewhere, most will have to sit idle for a year if we do not get these seats, but we have been denied admissions for no fault of our own. There are many more meritorious students who are in line. It’s a blow for all of us.” While students say the registrar and the Dean, Academics was responsible for the PG admissions, the Dean, Academics Programme, R.K. Sarin, when contacted, said, “I have not been a part of any administrative decision. I am only responsible for academics. So I am not the right person to comment on the issue.” Registrar, AL Sangal, said, “We are taking stock of the number of vacant seats at the institute. There are various conditions and cut offs which everyone is not aware about.” Officiating director of the institute, S.B.S. Mishra, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. While one of the candidates was GATE qualified, the rest had cleared the written test conducted by NIT authorities for non-GATE admissions. The current waiting list details of the candidates: 2 students in IPE - waiting list number three and four (both general); two in ME -waiting list number 1 (general) and 4 (OBC); two students in CE -waiting list number 2 (general) and 2 (SC). Earlier, their waiting list numbers were more. |
