Survey to ward off dengue danger
Bathinda, July 22 For the purpose, the city has been divided into five sectors. A team of the health staff in each sector will conduct the survey of the houses and will also inspect the sanitation conditions in the areas concerned so that early steps could be taken to check the breeding of the larva of the mosquito causing dengue well in time and protect the city residents from the disease. Talking to TNS here today, Officiating Civil Surgeon Dr Raghubir Singh Randhawa said the sanitary inspectors of the department had been asked to supervise the survey and submit their reports in this regard at the earliest. He said the teams would specially inspect those breeding places from where the larvae of mosquito causing dengue were detected the previous year. He said the health authorities wanted to check the occurrence of dengue fever in a big way this season and so, this survey. Meanwhile, a team of the health department comprising epidemiologist Dr Nisha and sanitary inspector Rashpal Singh today detected the larvae of the mosquito causing dengue in the desert coolers at four houses in the Aggarwal Colony where they had inspected as many as 30 units. Later, the team destroyed the larva and urged the residents to clean their desert coolers after every seven days. It is recalled that during a routine checking of the houses, the dengue larvae was found for the first time during this season yesterday in the desert coolers of four houses in street number nine on the Ajit Road here. |

Bollywood diva opens beauty saloon in city
Bathinda, July 22 Interacting with mediapersons, Mahima said after the blasts, they were feeling greatly insecure in Mumbai. She asked the Maharashtra government to initiate requisite steps to beef up the security of the people there in a big way. The film actress visited the city to inaugurate a ‘Beauty Lounge’ near the Ghorewala Chowk today. She also joined a function where some girls participated in a catwalk. She addressed those gathered on the occasion. To another question that why she is not being seen in the films these days, she replied, “I have also committed a ‘mistake’ (marriage) that many of you must have also committed. I also have a lovely daughter to whom I have to give enough time.” The actress further said she had great interest in films but at present, she was doing only one film, namely Mumbai. However, Mahima said she would do only one or two films in a year and would like to perform in romantic and comedy films. She added that she could not single out an actor with whom she would like to work as it is difficult to choose one because there were so many good and talented actors in the film industry. She also praised the people of Bathinda saying they were so beautiful that they did not need any beauty parlour. After Mahima’s arrival, people started jostling to have a look at the actress. Even the press photographers faced a tough time capturing her on the lens. Chaos prevailed when the actress went to the site of the function. |

Bawana-Nangal gas pipeline project clears bottlenecks
Bathinda, July 22 After this gas pipeline is commissioned, the Bathinda district will become perhaps the first district of Punjab where two pipelines carrying oil and gas will function. The Kandla-Bathinda oil pipeline is already functioning here. The gas supplied by the Bawana-Nangal pipeline will be used as fuel in the National Fertilizer Plant (NFL) that produces urea and other fertilisers to feed agriculture intensive states like Punjab, Haryana, UP and parts of Rajasthan. Now, the NFL is being run on coal and oil-based fuels, which cost more than gas. The implementation of the project came under a cloud recently when some farmers of the Gill Patti village, through which the gas pipeline is to pass, decided that they would not allow the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) to lay underground pipes to carry the gas to its destinations. Even the NFL authorities also got worried after they found that its feedstock changeover project from coal and oil fuel-based plant to a gas-based unit could hang in balance if the issue raised by the Gill Patti residents was not resolved. The GAIL was supposed to complete the project within 18 months. The gas pipeline will be further taken to Raman town of this district. The gas pipeline would reach the NFL from Bawana through Nangal and Ludhiana areas of Punjab. Deputy Commissioner S. Karuna. Raju said only 2.17 km stretch of the 122-km-long gas pipeline from Ludhiana to Bathinda was yet to be completed. He added that the Gill Patti residents had been taken into confidence and their questions related to acquisition of land and compensation were answered to their satisfaction during a meeting held today. The officials concerned of the GAIL also attended the meeting. |

Mansa dist being run by one PCS officer
Mansa, July 22 As two other PCS cadre officers, who were working in various capacities, have been transferred out of this district, the administration is being run by its Deputy Commissioner only for the past few days. Earlier, the district hogged the limelight in the first week of April this year when it became the only district in the state where a Punjab Civil Services (PCS) level officer Ravinder Singh was posted as its Deputy Commissioner by the Punjab Government. Facing perpetual backwardness in almost all fields, the district, neighbouring Haryana and having a number of sites connected with Indus Valley civilisation, has been suffering on account of blatant ignorance of the present ruling setup. Various important tasks including election related work is likely to be adversely affected due to inadequate strength of the PCS officers in the district. Mansa, a tehsil of Bathinda district, was accorded the status of district on April 13, 1992 by the then Congress chief minister Beant Singh. All the earlier deputy commissioners of Mansa were from the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) cadre. Rajesh Tripathi and Nachhattar Singh Brar (both PCS officers) were posted as SDM, Budhlada and SDM, Mansa, respectively. While Tripathi was assigned the additional charge of Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), Mansa and General Assistant to Deputy Commissioner, Brar was looking after as SDM, Sardulgarh and District Transport Officer (DTO), Mansa affairs as additional charges. Sukhminder Singh, a PCS officer, who was posted as SDM, Budhlada in place of Tripathi, did not join his duties as his transfer order had reportedly been cancelled by the Punjab Government. Ravinder Singh, DC, said he had brought the matter to the notice of the state government. He added that he had been assured by the state government that within two days or so new officers would be posted in the district. |

Shortage
of doctors at Civil Hospital
Fazilka, July 22 The hospital has an OPD turn-out of over 400 patients daily. Notably, the posts of the specialised doctors have been lying vacant following their promotions and transfers. Though, the Health Department has released the list of appointment of 42 doctors yesterday in different hospitals of Punjab, no doctor has been posted here. A fortnight ago, medical specialist Dr DK Bhukkal and skin specialist Dr SK Parnami had been promoted and posted as Assistant Civil Surgeon and District Family Welfare Officer in Ferozepur, respectively. Some time back orthopaedist Dr Ajay Narang was promoted as Senior Medical Officer (SMO) and was posted as SMO, Khui Khera. With the promotions and new postings, the services of outpatient department have crippled. The doctors have to perform other additional duties of emergency, labour room and conducting postmortems. The posts of gynaecologist and radiologist have been lying vacant for the last over 10 years. As an alternative arrangement, the patients looking for a gynaecologist are being treated by woman pathologist and anaesthetists. Rogi Kalyan Samiti Civil Hospital member Raj Kishore Kalra has demanded that the vacant posts should be filled immediately to provide the basic amenities to the border area residents. On the other hand, Senior Medical Officer Dr SP Garg maintained that the shortage of medical officers has been brought to the notice of higher-ups in the department time and again. |

Fazilka, July 22 About seven kilograms of opium was recovered from the possession of the accused after they were arrested while heading towards the Amritsar district of Punjab to deliver the consignment to their customers. The car, bearing the registration number of Rajasthan, having a sticker of 'Press', used by the accused, was also taken into custody by a team of the local police led by Sukhdev Singh, SHO, Sadar police station, Fazilka. Garbage dumping site posing health hazards
Ferozepur, July 22 Even the areas near the Blind Home, Baghdadi Gate, Gobind Nagari turning, near Dhir Hospital outside Zira Gate, Azad Nagar and other places, witness the piles of trash have become breeding ground for flies, mosquitoes and other germs. Moreover, it contributes to give rise in the number of stray dogs and cattle. Even at certain localities on the Sant Lal Road in the cantonment and near Market Committee office, the garbage piles are inviting public wrath. The situation is equally appalling in Basti Tankan Wali and interiors of the town. Besides rubbish, accumulation of used polythene bags at all places is another matter of concern. Though the district administration has issued stringent prohibitory orders to ban the usage of polybags and even raids have been conducted at some shops to check its retailing, nothing tangible has been achieved yet and people are violating the ban with impunity. Blocked sewerage, cesspools of slush and potholes infested roads are further adding to the people's nightmare. At some many places in the city, the streets are overflowing with sewerage water, which might become catalyst for spreading of water-borne diseases. In the cantonment area, there is no sewerage facility at all. Though the proposal has been sent to the higher authorities but to no avail and the residents continue to face hardships on this account. Davinder Kapoor, president, MC, said he was returning from Jalandhar where the Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal today announced that the sewerage disposal system would be outsourced. Kapoor expressed hope that the situation would improve once the project was materialised. Sukhpal Singh Nannu, Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Revenue) said the work on laying sewerage pipes was already going on in the city, adding that the situation would improve after the process gets completed. The MC officials, while citing paucity of manpower and resources as major reasons behind poor sanitation, said even the people have a habit to throw trash from their homes and shops out on the streets. If the public cooperates and help the authorities concerned, the problems can be resolved. Harish Monga, social activist, said he had approached the executive officer so many times but nothing has moved beyond lip service. |
Bid to abduct BKU activist
Abohar, July 22 The farmers staged a dharna at the police station under the banner of the BKU. They were led by the block secretary Bal Krishan. The farmers alleged that the police had been shielding the persons, who had allegedly dragged Bhadoo, a former member of the village panchayat, in a vehicle at village Shergarh a few days back. They had to throw Bhadoo out when some persons chased the vehicle. One of the suspects was identified. He was later found consuming liquor at the police station complex when a deputation of the BKU went there to lodge the complaint. The farmers raised slogans against the police. Notably, the SHO was transferred by the SSP yesterday. The new incumbent Kuldeep Sharma said he took over the charge yesterday and assured of nabbing the suspects soon.
