2nd cut-off opens more options for students
New Delhi, June 21 "I took admission to Economics (Hons) at Hindu initially. But now with BCom (Hons) available at a lower cutoff in Lady Shri Ram (LSR) College, I am keen to move to that college. I am still contemplating my options. The hostel at LSR is an added advantage," said Kritika Juneja. Similar is the case for colleges like Karori Mal College (KMC) and Venkateswara College which had declared a very high cutoff in BCom (Hons) and Eco (Hons) and are still left with vacant seats. Hence, in the second cut-off, a lot of students who opted for other courses in other colleges due to high cut-offs earlier, now have a chance to make it to these two popular courses. At KMC, which had put the first cut-off at 97 per cent in BCom (Hons), not a single seat has been filled in this course which has a sanctioned strength of 43, while in Eco (Hons), which was put at a cut-off of 93 per cent to 98 per cent, only nine out of 31 seats were filled. "I had opted for BCom at Hansraj initially as I couldn't make it to BCom (Hons). Well now my choice is Venkateshwara College or KMC for BCom (Hons). I have already visited Hansraj for my cancellation and tomorrow I will take admission to either KMC or Venkateswara," said Harman Sandhu at North Campus. When the admission begins tomorrow after the second cut-off list, the university officials expect a considerable movement of students. However, especially in science, changes are expected after the first round of allotment of seats in AIEEE colleges on June 25. Colleges, on the other hand, are hoping that the movement in the second list will lead to stablising of the extra number of students they have admitted. "We are really pinning hopes on the second and third cut-off lists. Especially in science courses, we hope that the numbers will stabilise after the counseling in medical and engineering colleges end," said Pratibha Jolly, principal of Miranda House. |
Jamia declares entrance exam results
New Delhi, June 21 Simi Malhotra, spokesperson for Jamia, said, "The lists of the selected and waitlisted candidates for admission to MBA and MA (Mass Communication Research Centre) have been uploaded on the university's website." Information about the results and interview schedule can be accessed from the university site www.jmi.ac.in/admission/results.htm Elated over his selection, Roshan said, "I have cleared the written exam for BTech (electronics). However, I still have to take an interview, but I don't think that should be a problem. Hope I get hostel accommodation here, else, I will have to look for a room in Jamia Nagar or other nearby areas. I hail from Jhansi and have already rung up my parents to tell them about my selection." Ritika, another thrilled successful candidate, said, "I have made it to MCRC and will study television journalism. I never thought that I would clear the entrance exam. The result has come as a surprise for me as well as my family. I hope I manage to get hostel accommodation, but if I don't, I shall stay with relatives. I am looking forward to my term in Jamia and have been exploring the campus since morning." Jamia had received 1,14,244 admission forms this season. Malhotra said, "The maximum number of forms was sold for the BTech and other technical courses like MBA, MTech, BE etc. A large number of applications were also received for courses like BEd, BArch and MA and BA in mass communication." Jamia introduced many changes in the admission process this season. For the first time, computerised admission forms were sold for the engineering courses. This was done to tackle the rush for these courses. Then, many new courses were introduced. |

Fake army recruitment racket busted
New Delhi, June 20 They provided the victims with fake admit cards, answersheets and joining letters. They also conducted medical examination and physical measurement to dupe them. Fake Army uniforms have been seized from their possession, said a senior police officer. "Shukla is the leader of the gang. He had joined the Army in 1985 as a jawan and had retired in 2004 as a naik. After 2004, he started informally coaching youngsters, who wanted to join the Army, in his village. However, gradually he began duping people. Then he met Maan Singh, who was also in the Army but in 1990 he left the job on the medical grounds," said the officer. The police got the clue on the basis of a complaint filed by Ishwar Singh, a resident of Sonepat who paid Rs 11 lakh to them for getting his three nephews' placement in the Army but till date none of them have been provided any job in the Army. "Based on the information, we arrested Shukla from the Pitampura Metro station on June 16 and then three more persons Maan Singh, Sanjay Misra (33) and Shiv Narain (40) were arrested yesterday from New Delhi railway station," the officer added. A fake uniform of major of the Army Medical Corps with a bunch of original certificates of 15 candidates was seized. The police said the gang promised placement in the Army in the rank of jawans. Shukla and Maan Singh met their victims in the uniform of a major while Sanjay Misra impersonated as a subedaar in plain clothes. |

The court was hearing a petition filed by Vijaylaxmi who lives near the Humayun Tomb in Nizamuddin. Vijaylaxmi had alleged that the director, monument, ASI, through a letter on June 8, permitted the private construction company to carry out construction. The permission is violative of the ASI's own undertaking submitted earlier to this court, saying that it will not allow any unathorised construction within 100 meters of the tomb, she said. The petitioner also referred to the high court's previous judgement in 2010 prohibiting any illegal construction near the monument to save it from any kind of damage. Visually impaired protest disability draft
New Delhi, June 21 According to the section, in the proposed draft for a new disability law code, the definition becomes vague and the one percentage allocation for them in the increased 6 per cent reservation for the persons with disabilities is not at par with other sections covered by the Disabilities Act, 1995. Secretary general of the All India Confederation of the Blind (AICB) JS Kaul said, "The scope of the employment benefit would be limited if 40 per cent disability is removed as recommended by the committee." Due to this, the job opportunities would decrease for the visually impaired. "The real suffers would be deprived of the right of reservation. The reservation given to the visually impaired is again just half per cent even as they constitute about 48 per cent of the total disabled population. The reservation of both the categories should be suitably raised," he said. The draft prepared by the committee, designated for the purpose by the union ministry of social justice and empowerment, sees a rise in the reservation in vacancies for differently able from 3 to 6 per cent, with 1 per cent each going to new entries, such as leprosy cured, spastic, hearing impair, orthopaedically challenged, besides the visually impaired. The representatives of the National Federation of the Blind and AICB met the chairperson of the committee, Sudha Kaul, in this regard later after the protest at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre. Meanwhile, the committee is leant to have assured the representatives of looking into their concerns before submitting the final draft by June 30. |
