Faruqui said he wanted to work for the community. He claimed that as chairman of the DMC, he had tried to launch computer courses for the imams and caretakers of the mosques, but the proposal was opposed by the government. "Had the government been serious about the welfare of the Muslims, it would have welcomed my efforts," he said. About the Samajwadi Party, he said, "I hope I will be able to work for the community in this party. UP has a large number of Muslims. They need guidance for development. SAD (Delhi-UK) for early poll of
gurdwara panel
New Delhi, June 10 SAD (Delhi-UK) president Jasjit Singh said the court had issued a notice to DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna to present his version on July 14. Addressing a conference, Jasjit said he was not against construction of the parking lot. But he opposed the sudden rise of cost of project from an estimated amount of Rs 50 crore to Rs 335 crore. Jasjit said he had been receiving letters, emails and phone calls from Sikhs living in different cities in the country and abroad to restrain Sarna from eliminating the historical ambience of Rakab Ganj Gurdwara. He alleged that Saran was planning to control all historical gurdwaras of the city permanently by creating private trusts for each gurdwara. He alleged that the Sarna brothers were diverting funds of the DSGMC schools to the private trusts. Due to alleged rampant corruption, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had distanced themselves from laying the foundation stone of the parking lot. He demanded that Sarna should make public the account in which Rs 150 crore was deposited and what agreement was made with the home ministry in connection with the parking lot in the gurdwara premises. |

DU sports trials make students run around
New Delhi, June 10 Unlike last year when the university held common trials at one location in the North Campus for all colleges, this year an interim arrangement has been made. The colleges will conduct their own trials. However, a change in policy is expected next year. "Firstly, we have to visit each college separately on different days for the trials. Moreover, there is no centralised information about the trails. One has to go to every college repeatedly for clarifications. Also, there is a lot of confusion about the formalities to be fulfilled. The admission bulletin doesn't say anything about the trials," said Mistha Rathore, a softball player and DU aspirant from Jaipur. Last year, the trials conducted by the university were not appreciated by many college teachers. They were not only miffed with the centralised trials, but also with the marking scheme which gave 75 per cent preference to the certificates and only 25 per cent to the trials. Though centralised trials have been done away for the time being, the marking of the scheme remains and teachers still have a problem with it. Currently, sports trials for St Stephen's and Jesus and Mary are on. This year, St Stephen's has included football as one of the sports after a break of three years. "This year, we have incorporated football in our trials. The grounds are also ready. We will use the rugby ground for football. Till last year, a large number of students would come to us asking about football and sadly we could not help them. But this year, we will not let them go back disheartened," said SK Chakravorty, associate professor, physical education, St Stephen's. Also, physical education trials at the Delhi School of Economics will begin on June 14 and a day before there will be a fitness camp for all the aspirants. The sports trials for the students who have applied under the sports quota at the Jesus and Mary College began yesterday in categories like football, baseball, cricket, badminton, basketball, hockey softball and athletics. The trials, which are taking place from morning till noon, will be followed by interviews after which the list of selected students will be published. |

Now, head constables can challan for only Rs 100
New Delhi, June 10 According to a senior traffic official, henceforth, the head constables will not have the authority to issue any challan for more than Rs 100 per violation. "They are not authorised to stop or prosecute any commercial vehicle for traffic violations. If a head constable notices any violation by a commercial vehicle, he can only fill in a violation slip and get a notice issued to the errant vehicle through the notice branch of the traffic police," said the official. He added that the decision had been taken after receiving frequent complaints of misuse of prosecution powers by traffic police officials up to the rank of head constable. To do away with the menace, an order has been issued, specifying the powers of head constables on motorcycles and at traffic intersections. The head constables will not be authorised to prosecute for violations like dangerous driving by any category of motor vehicle, use of mobile phone while driving, disobeying directions of a police official, overspeeding and driving without insurance certificate. However, they can challan a vehicle for offences like red light-jumping, riding without helmet, triple riding, improper parking, using defective number plates, driving on the wrong side, using tinted glasses and driving without seat belts etc. |
