Inter-caste Marriage
Fatehabad, June 19 After Dalip Singh, a former sarpanch of Hinjrawan Khurd village, allegedly hit the car thrice, both the tractor as well as the car overturned and fell on roadside fields, resulting in serious injuries to the alleged assailant. The boy’s parents and other kin also sustained injuries. The boy’s kin alleged that Dalip Singh was a close relative of the girl and he allegedly tried to kill them in the name of family honour “under the cover of a road accident”. Admitted to the general hospital here, boy Parveen’s father Shamsher Chand Kamboj alleged that the police had not registered their FIR, though they had given a written complaint. “My son had eloped with Santosh, a girl of the Bajigar community from our village on March 22 this year. Both are major and we do not have any news regarding them since then. However, members of the girl’s family have been threatening us since then,” he alleged. The girl’s family, he said, was angry with his son’s relation with Santosh. He said he was going towards Haripura village with his wife Sita Rani, brother Krishan, sister-in-law Krishna and a relative Sheela Rani today, when Dalip Singh allegedly tried to crush their car with his tractor. “First I thought that it was a simple accident. But, he hit my Alto car thrice before I could recover from the jerk received from the first thump,” said Shamsher Chand. The SHO of the Sadar police station, Vijender Kumar, said Dalip Singh was critically injured and the police would register an FIR after recording the statements of both the sides. Dalip Singh has been shifted to Hisar in a critical condition. |

Senior citizens sans pension for
3 months
Sirsa, June 19 Senior citizens allege that they have been running from pillar to post for their pension since April, but every time they were told that they would get their pensions soon. “Our pension is our only financial support at this age. But for the last three months, we have not received a penny,” said Parmeshwari Devi from Dabwali town. The authorities have entrusted the job of distribution of pension to the Axis Bank. The pension is to be distributed through biometric cards. The bank, in turn, has delegated the task to Fino, a company providing business correspondent services. Beneficiaries alleged that though the company has prepared biometric cards for a majority of them, the correspondents have not been visiting with the ATM machines for the distribution of their pension. Sumit Kumar, assistant manager of the Axis Bank, maintained that the pension of the beneficiaries would be distributed soon. “Ever since some unidentified miscreants looted Rs 9 lakh from a block coordinator of Fino on May 13, the workers are scared to venture out with money,” he said. |

Siamese twins dead
Fatehabad, June 19 Dr Ravi Kant Dawra, a paediatrician in Patiala Children and Maternity Home, where the conjoined twins were born last evening through a caesarian section, declared them dead late last evening. The thoracopagus twins - those conjoined at the thorax - had a common heart and even their lungs were interlinked. Sukhwinder (22), a woman from Sanga village near here, delivered the Siamese twins last evening in the nursing home. “As the auscultation of the heart rate by stethoscope was not possible due to their unison at the thorax, pulsation at their umbilical chords, which too was united, was the only source of recording the rate of blood circulation,” said Dr Dawra. The twins’ pulse ran at 100 beats per minute at the time of birth, but they had a problem in breathing. Dr Dawra said he tried his best to resuscitate the twins by giving artificial respiration through ambubag, but as was feared, the pulse stopped in the night and he had to declare the twins dead after all signs of life diminished. He said the Siamese twins with conjoined vital organs “are either delivered stillborn or have bleak chances of survival”. To avoid such situations, Dr Dawra said, the parents should follow modern obstetrics care that includes an ultrasound test in the sixth week to confirm the pregnancy and another in the second trimester to ascertain the wellbeing of the foetus. “The process of organogenesis (formation of body organs) is complete by 12 weeks and if the parents come to know of deformities like the conjoined twins at that stage, they have sufficient time to opt for abortion,” said the hospital gynaecologist, Dr Anjana Dawra. She said under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act - 1971, any doctor approved to conduct abortion, could legally recommend the medical termination of pregnancy in such cases, if the pregnancy was up to 12 weeks old. However, in case of more than 12 weeks and up to 20 weeks of pregnancy, a medical board of three doctors could recommend abortion legally. “The period between the 12th to 14th weeks is the optimum time for confirming the wellbeing of the foetus, so that timely steps could be taken, if needed,” she added. |
