A successful training hub
Chandigarh, May 25
While the city might have disappointed many with the IIT results, it has proved to be a perfect incubator for outstation talent with four such students coached here making it to the top 100 with Kunal Chawla from Ropar bagging the all India sixth rank. Sumegha Garg, a Bathinda girl who topped in the girls’ category with the all India rank of 12, was enrolled with a local coaching centre. Similarly, Rhythm Gupta (rank 27) and Parminder Singh (rank 43), both from Ambala, have done their city-based coaching centres proud.

Kunal Chawla Ropar lad secures 6th place

Kunal Chawla, a resident of Thermal Colony, has made the city proud by securing the sixth position in the IIT-JEE examination. A student of Netaji Model School, Kunal is at present undergoing a 10-day theory and practical training at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education in Mumbai.

As many as 10 jail inmates, under trial in different criminal cases, were injured in a clash that took place on the jail premises here this evening.

BTech passout held for rape bid
Chandigarh, May 25
The police today arrested a 22-year-old youth for an attempt to rape a two-year-old girl in Manimajra here today. The police arrested Rohit, who is a BTech passout, in this connection.

His mother’s 12-year struggle did not go in vain

He lost his father 12 years ago and mother was left to struggle in order to sustain her family of three. Not well educated, she took to stitching clothes. Nitin would see her on her machine day and night and would promise to solve all her problems one day and today he has done it. Having made it to IIT Nitin Mukesh of Khuda Lahora has marked an end to all his woes.

Power cuts, both scheduled and unscheduled, made life of residents of the town tough since Saturday morning, with most of the sectors witnessing long-duration power cuts. Officials of the HVPN said the supply was interrupted as two mainline towers near the Azad Colony and the Ambedpur Colony had been damaged due to high-velocity winds that lashed the region some days ago.

Service tax on two new services discussed
Chandigarh, May 25
An open house on the applicability of service tax on two new services introduced in the Union Budget-2011, including the short-term accommodation services and the restaurant services, which have been brought under service tax net with effect from May 1, was held in the Central Revenue Building here today.

Protest by JD activists
Activists of the Chandigarh Territorial Janata Dal (United) today held a protest at Mani Majra in front of the MC’s office against the indifferent attitude of the Chandigarh administration towards the problems of area residents. They also burnt an effigy of the Chandigarh administration. They demanded that the Food and Civil Supply office be shifted to Mani Majra in order to streamline the issuing of ration cards to residents of the area. Later, a delegation led by Surinder Bhardwaj, president of the party, submitted a memorandum to the MC Assistant Commissioner, who will hand it over to the Adviser to the UT Administrator. Their other demands included provision of basic amenities, along with regular water and electricity supplies, and opening of more ration depots in order to distribute wheat and atta under the PDS scheme among BPL families.

A dust-storm lashed the town here this evening, throwing life out of gear. Some trees fell on the roads due to the strong winds, disrupting the smooth flow of traffic. SDMs to check stocks at fair price shops, says Home Secy

Home Secretary-cum-Secretary Food and Supplies and Consumer Affairs convened a meeting here today. According to the secretary’s directions, on receipt of a tank lorry of kerosene at the kerosene pump, stocks should be decanted in the presence of the SDM/Additional Deputy Commissioner/Inspector Food and Supplies and members of the Vigilance Committee.

PANCHKULA: Students of junior wing of St Soldier’s School, Sector 16, presented their respective club activities before going for the summer break. Eco club children emphasised upon the need to keep environment clean to save earth. Children learnt to make and use paper bags. Students of the art club showed paper art techniques. Yoga club students displayed various exercises like ‘Pranayam’, ‘Vajrasana’, ‘Tarasana’, ‘Padmasana’ etc to promote their motto “Healthy living is good living”. Students of drama club showcased their acting skills in the form of play, skits and mono-acting, besides highlighting, the need to save water.

The accused in the Gurgaon kidney racket case were produced in the special CBI court here today. Transplant surgeon Dr Upender Aggarwal, a close associate of kidney scam kingpin Dr Amit Kumar, was also produced in court.

Hoax caller arrested
Chandigarh, May 25
The crime branch of the Chandigarh Police today arrested the person who made a hoax call to the Police Control Room day before yesterday and informed that a bomb has been planted in the district court complex.

Four motorcycles stolen
Chandigarh, May 25
Four vehicles were stolen from the city in separate incidents in less than 24 hours. Dr US Malik, a resident of Sector 7-B, reported that his Pulsar motorcycle (HR-03G-8555) was stolen from the parking of Panjab University library.

The third Ashok Kumar Vij Memorial Under-14 Cricket Tournament will be held at Banyan Tree School cricket ground, Sector 48, here from May 30. The tournament is being organised by the Professional Cricket Club. Players born on or after January 1, 1997, are eligible to take part. All matches be of 30 overs duration.
