MP asks officials to curb encroachment on govt land
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 25 Libra was presiding over the district-level vigilance and monitoring committee to take stock of development works. He asked executive officers, BDPOs and other officials to initiate steps to keep a tab on government land and not to allow any kind of encroachment. He pointed out that health department officials should ensure the availability of clean drinking water in villages to avoid water-borne diseases. ADC Pradeep Singh Kaleke said the computerisation of land records was on and records of 326 of the 455 villages would be provided at ‘farad kendras’ of various subdivisions soon, adding that land record of other villages would be made online till June 30. |

Two brothers struck by lightning, dead
Shehzadpur (Ambala), May 25 Villagers said the boys were coming back from their fields on the outskirts of
the village. When they approached near the temple in the village, they were struck by lightning. Both died on the spot, causing shock in the village. |
Kidney scam accused produced in CBI court
Panchkula, May 25 In the last hearing, the CBI court had issued production warrants against Dr Aggarwal, currently lodged in the Guntur jail in Andhra Pradesh, in connection with the Gurgaon kidney racket scandal, that rocked the nation in 2008. All accused, except nurse Linda and Dr Saraj, who were out on bail, were sent to the Ambala jail after completion of court proceedings today. The CBI would produce all victims and complainants on the next hearing, May 31, in the local court. The CBI court had framed charges against Dr Amit, his brother Jeevan Kumar, Dr Krishan, laboratory technician Manoj, middlemen Giyasuddin and Jagdish, nurse Linda, Dr Saraj and Dr Upender. The racket was busted on January 24, 2008, after a joint team of Uttar Pradesh and Gurgaon police raided a house at Sector 22 in Gurgaon. Dr Amit, who was later nabbed from Nepal in February 2008, and his accomplices were allegedly operating on the poor and transplanting their kidneys into NRI clients. The CBI, in its charge sheet filed on April 29, 2008, had stated that the accused lured people to a private hospital in Gurgaon and other places, where their kidneys were removed and sold at higher prices to others, including patients from abroad. Cases for removing kidneys were also registered against Dr Amit and Jeevan in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and other states. |

Tanishq robbery bid
Chandigarh, May 25 The accused, Hardeep Singh, was lodged in the Ropar jail in a case under the Arms Act. He was remanded to three-day police custody. Besides, the prime accused, Pardeep Kumar, who was brought on production warrants to the city last week was remanded to judicial custody today after the five-day police remand. The Punjab Police had solved the Sector 17 Tanishq showroom robbery bid case with the arrest of one of the gang members, Pardeep Kumar, alias Mota, who incidentally is the son of a UT Police head constable. Pardeep is part of the eight-member gang that was busted in Ropar possessing illegal weapons. Pardeep disclosed to the police that he along with five others was involved in the robbery bid at Tanishq showroom in Sector 17 on November 4, 2010, a day before Diwali. Bases on his interrogation, the police of the Sector 17 police station arrested another accused Hardeep Singh. “Hardeep was also lodged in Ropar jail in another case of Arms Act and we procured his police custody as he is also involved in the case. Teams have been dispatched to Punjab and Haryana to nab the remaining three accused. The accent car used in the crime has also been recovered,” said inspector Ranjot Singh, SHO, Sector 17 police station. |

Elderly couple’s house burgled, valuables stolen
Panchkula, May 25 In her complaint to the police, Asha Sangar said she, along with her husband PC Sangar, a retired Joint Secretary with the Punjab Government, had gone to a doctor around 11 am. She added that on their return from the clinic in less than an hour, she noticed that the locks of the doors had been broken and the house ransacked. She reported that besides gold and silver jewellery worth about Rs 2 lakh, the burglars had taken away Rs 10,000 in cash. She said they were living in the house alone as their son, working as a journalist, was posted in New Delhi. The police said the burglars had presumably been keeping an eye on the house and knew about the couple’s visit to the doctor. The connivance of someone working in the house could not be ruled out, they added. Sector 5 station house officer Om Prakash said a case was registered and the matter was being investigated. |

Hoax caller arrested
Chandigarh, May 25 The accused has been identified as Abdul Samad, a resident of Kajheri village. He was arrested today from in front of the Sector 43 ISBT. The accused said he was not having cordial relations with his wife and she was living with another man. The accused said he snatched her SIM card (9872874599) and used it for making a hoax call as he wanted to take revenge from his wife. Abdul is a native of Bihar and came to Chandigarh around 10 years ago. The police said subscriber and call details of the mobile number was procured from Airtel. During the scrutiny of the number, one Ajay Kumar, a resident of Sector 56, Chandigarh, was shortlisted. Ajay Kumar was traced in a house at Balongi. Ajay said he was staying in the house with a woman who was having a matrimonial dispute with her husband. |

Four motorcycles stolen
Chandigarh, May 25 Dalip Kumar, a resident of Phase II, Ramdarbar, reported that his Hero Honda motorcycle (CH-04J-9638) was stolen from his house last night. In another incident, Rinku Singh Chauhan, a resident of Sector 56, reported that someone had stolen Hero Honda motorcycle (CH-01AC-7608) from in front of his house. Abhinek Kumar, a resident of Sector 18, reported that someone had stolen his motorcycle number (JH-05-V-9867) from rear side of SCO 50, Sector 17-E. Theft
Jagdish Kumar, a resident of Sector 11, reported that his laptop, mobile phone, three wristwatches, a gold ring, five pairs of gold earrings, 10 silver coins, Rs 35,000, a camera and two gold plated sets were stolen from his residence. Ajay Kumar Poddar, a resident of Raipur Khurd village, reported that someone had stolen five tyres from two three-wheelers (CH-23-8946 and CH-04-L-2704) from near his house last night.
Laptop stolen
Jasprit Singh, a resident of water works, Sector 37, reported that someone had stolen a laptop from his car (CH-03F-6000), which was parked in front of SCO 323, Sector 38-D on May 24.
Booked
The police has booked a woman in a case of criminal intimidation, mischief by fire and theft on the complaint of her husband today. The case was registered after getting legal opinion. Gaurav Gulati, a resident of Sector 41, alleged that his wife Ragini had stolen his passport, some documents and foreign currency and burnt them.
Conned
An unidentified person conned a city resident and fled with cash, important documents and valuables. Ravinder Kumar Gupta, a resident of Sector 21, reported that a person approached him and told him that oil was leaking from the engine of his car. As he came out of the car, the accused fled with his briefcase containing Rs 35,000, driving licence, PAN card, voter card, chequebook and some other documents. |
