Hoshiarpur: Two unidentified youths, brandishing a sickle, snatched a truck loaded with 50 bags of tobacco from Som Nath of Kakar police station, Bhoranj district, Hamirpur, from Hariana Road here on Saturday night. According to police sources, Som Nath parked his truck before a godown of some private firm to load goods. At 11 pm two unidentified youths came to him and inquired about the road for the holy shrine of Chintpurni. Later, by threatening him with a sickle they made him board the truck and after beating him took the truck towards Hariana town. They made him leave the truck near Hariana and fled in it. The Sadar police has registered a case under Sections 392 and 34 of the IPC. Teacher booked for cutting student’s hair
Tarn Taran: Sawita Sachdeva, a teacher of Arya Girls High School here, has been booked under Section 295 of the IPC for trimming the hair of Komaljeet Kaur, a student of class V of the school. Though the teacher was taken into custody by the police, but the matter was resolved with the mutual understanding of both the parties with the intervention of some respectable persons of the area. According to information, the case was registered on the statement of Sarwan Singh, father of the girl. Sarwan alleged that the teacher cut the hair of his daughter as she had not combed her hair due to fear of getting late for her school. |

Punjab Games: Hockey matches begin today
Jalandhar, February 28 The hockey matches are beginning tomorrow at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here and conclude on March 5. Hockey lovers would get to see 11 women and 16 men teams in action on the turf during the next five days. The opening match would be held in the women category between Moga and Bathinda at 7.30 am. In the men category the first match would be played between Gurdaspur and Ferozepur district boys. Seven hockey matches would be held tomorrow. The closing ceremony of the games would be held on March 6 with the recent Bollywood hit trio of “Yamla Pagla Deewana” - Dharmendra, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol - and Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi and comedy stars Bhagwant Mann and Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi stealing the show. It is for the first time that the Punjab Sports Department would be giving a whopping amount of Rs 2.31 crore as prizes to the winners. The first three position holder teams in each discipline would be awarded Rs 9 lakh, Rs 7 lakh and Rs 5 lakh, respectively. Talking to The Tribune, Director, Sports, Punjab, Pargat Singh said it was for the first time that any state had taken an initiative to award huge cash awards in its state games. “The state sports department is committed to promote hockey at the grass-roots levels and the cash awards would surely add to the competitive spirit of the teams. The budding hockey players from villages and districts would get a good launch pad for getting recognition,” he added. General secretary of the Jalandhar Hockey, Iqbal Singh Sandhu said adequate arrangements had been made by the district administration for the lodging of the hockey players. “The girls would stay at the youth hostel and Bodhi Sports Hostel on the premises of the Surjit Stadium, while the boys would be putting up at Lakhpat Rai Hostel at DAV College,” he said. He added that another highlight of the games would be a glittering concluding day ceremony, which would include the who’s who of Bollywood and Punjabi music industry. “The aim of the games is to inculcate a sporting spirit among the youth and to provide a good platform to the budding sports players in different disciplines,” he maintained. |

DC refutes MP’s allegation

Hoshiarpur, February 28 He was commenting on the statement of MP Santosh Chaudhary, appeared in The Tribune today. He said he was not acting as a Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, when the regional office of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Chandigarh, had sent the case for getting submitted the proposal on March 10, 2010, for the opening of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Hoshiarpur. Later on, when he took over as the Deputy Commissioner, Hoshiarpur, on August 2, 2010, the case was brought to his notice and he was searching for some suitable peace of land in the district for the purpose. Meanwhile, the panchayat of Gajh village passed a resolution to provide 8 acres of the shamlat land in the village for the opening of the proposed Kendriya Vidayalya. |

Degrees conferred on 340 students
Phillaur, February 28 Punjab Assembly Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon was the chief guest, who gave away degrees to the students. College managing committee Chairman S.K. Malhotra, Principal Karan Sharma, SDM Pritam Singh, DSP Rajbalwinder Singh Marar, Manjit Singh Gulati and Prem Duggal also addressed the function. Kahlon announced to give Rs 5 lakh to the college from his discretionary fund. Prizes were also given to 110 students for their achievements in various fields. |
Advocates to go on fast unto death

Amritsar, February 28 Before this, the advocates decided to observe a “no work day” on March 1. The executive body of association in its meeting said the Punjab Government had failed to take any action against the DTO till now. Pardeep Saini, president, Bar association, said if the government failed to accede to their demand, the office-bearers of the association would sit on a hunger strike till death in the front of the judicial complex of the district courts from March 3 and the government would be responsible for any untoward incident. |
