Digging work for laying sewerage stopped
Nawanshahr, February 20 The localities - Nai Abadi, Musapur Road and Quila Mohalla - fall under Wards 1, 15 and 17, represented by Manjit Kaur, Pirthi Chand and Chet Ram Rattan, municipal councillors belonging to the ruling Congress. Though Manjit Kaur was not in favour of stopping the work by just linking it with the problem of drainage of storm water on the plea that the residents of Mohalla Quila have been waiting for the basic civic amenity for the past many decades for want of requisite sanction from the Railway Department for carrying out digging for laying sewerage pipes and a lot of time consuming efforts had to be put in for succeeding in obtaining sanction from the Railway Department, but to avoid confrontation among themselves, the Congress councillors and the residents submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Shruti Singh, urging her to solve the problem of drainage of storm water. “The residents of Nai Abadi and Musapur Road and especially the students of DAV Public School situated there have to face a lot of inconvenience during rains for want of proper arrangements of drainage of storm water in the area,” said Rattan, adding that if the sewerage line for extending facility to Mohalla Quila could be connected from the railway crossing near Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, instead of the railway crossing near Nai Abadi, the problem of drainage could be mitigated to a large extent. Surinder Singh, SDO, Punjab State Sewerage and Water Supply Board, when contacted on phone said when the proposal was being prepared no one, including the councillors, raised the problem of drainage of storm water. Now, the work of laying sewerage pipes could not be changed from the railway crossing near Nai Abadi to Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar as the sanction for undertaking digging for laying sewerage pipes had been obtained for the railway crossing near Nai Abadi. “If any change is to be effected, the sanction for undertaking digging work would have to be taken afresh from the Railway Department,” said the SDO, adding that earlier it took about four year for obtaining the requisite sanction. |
