Sarpanch’s death: MLA accused of murder
Nawanshahr, February 21 Demanding registration of a case against the trio, deceased’s younger brother Prem Lal, alias Lally, said Jagdish Mehmi would be cremated after the registration of a case. Talking to mediapersons, Prem Lal said his cousin Chaudhary Mohan Lal had been causing mental torture and issuing threats to Jagdish for the past few years. Jagdish had remained his PA for the past about two decades but a few years ago he had started sidelining him for the reasons best known to him. He alleged the MLA and his PA were even hatching a conspiracy against Jagdish to trap him in false cases of alleged misappropriation of funds. “Jagdish has been receiving threats from the MLA and now they have found a letter from his files written by him in August last year, in which he had stated that the trio had been hatching a conspiracy against him and he had also expressed apprehension that he might be killed,” further alleged Pem Lal, showing the letter to the mediapersons. Besides, the MLA had also been threatening him for not to join Manpreet Badal, he further alleged while adding that due to strained relations with the MLA, associates of Manpreet Badal had been wooing him. “The civil and police officials have been exerting pressure on them to ‘amicably’ solve the issue in the family,” further alleged Prem Lal adding that they would not relent till they get justice. Prem Lal alleged the MLA had called Jagdish to his residence at Banga where he gave the victim some poisonous substance mixed in his food. The MLA might have thought Jagdish would meet with an accident once the poison starts working, Prem added. Jagdish started vomiting once he reached home after which he was taken to a hospital at Dhahan Kaleran, said the brother. MLA Mohan Lal, when contacted on phone, termed the allegations baseless. He said Jagdish was not only his cousin but he had promoted his political career too. He remained busy in a number of functions at different villages in his constituency and he had not met Jagdish on Sunday. In the evening, he received a call from Jagdish’s son that he had been brought to Dhahan Kaleran hospital. By the time he reached the hospital, Jagdish had died. The younger brother of Jagdish had misbehaved with him at the hospital, he said. Jasbir Singh, DSP, Banga, said that the police had not received any complaint from the family so far. |

Red Cross centre joins hands with NGO to reach out to poor
Gurdaspur, February 21 It turned out to be largely attended event, with a majority of the patients being from the lower strata of society. Said H.S. Goraya, manager, Amandeep Hospital, “Every year 35,000 children are born with cleft- a gap in the upper lip. Though completely curable, less than half of these children get proper treatment they desperately need --- only because they are too poor. Without corrective surgery, these kids are condemned to a lifetime of isolation and suffering. Taunted and tormented for their disfigurement, they cannot attend school, hold a regular job or get married.” “That’s where Smile Train, a US-based NGO comes in. We are constantly in touch with this NGO, which also provides financial aid for the surgeries. Since 2000, Smile Train has sponsored over 250,000 safe, quality surgeries across India, totally free of cost,” he added. “The NGO is unique because we work only with local doctors - training, helping and empowering them to become self-sufficient. There are an estimated 10 lakh untreated cases of clefts in India. The goal of Smile Train is to continue providing cleft surgeries across India on an ever-increasing scale until we have completely eradicated the problem of clefts,” he said. “As many as 30 children of Gurdaspur and its surrounding areas were identified with deformed upper lips and were operated on at the camp. This is for the second time that a medical camp, with emphasis of cleft surgeries was held in this district. The first such camp was held at Kahnuwan, 15 kms from here, in July last year,” disclosed Romesh Mahajan, project director of the drug de-addiction centre, who coordinated the proceedings. A 35-member strong team, comprising senior doctors and paramedical staff from Amandeep Hospital, performed the surgeries. Scores of cancer stricken patients from the Malwa belt also turned up where throat cancer patients were provided treatment. Special provisions were made to treat disabled children. Gurdaspur SDM J.P. Singh was the chief guest. |

Jalandhar Cantt residents protest closure of Mall Road by Army
Jalandhar, February 21 An 11-member delegation handed over the memorandum to Col (GS) P.K. Srivastava. While Sub Area Commander-cum-president of Jalandhar Cantonment Board, Brigadier Arup Sen was not available at the station headquarters. Col Srivastava assured the delegation of resolving the issue amicably at the earliest and taking a sympathetic view of the matter. The dharna was held following the closure of the Mall Road approaching Sansarpur by the Army on security grounds in Jalandhar Cantonment. The Army authorities had installed a gate at the entrance of Sansarpur barricade about two months ago, which has been causing inconvenience to the local people. Earlier in the morning, residents from Jalandhar Cantonment, Sansarpur and Dhina villages gathered to lodge their protest against the Army authorities in this regard. The protesters later went to Lal Kurti market, Sadar Bazaar and Kaluram Chowk in the cantonment and finally gathered at the Sub Area Commander’s office. Adequate Army and district police arrangements were made to avoid any untoward incident during the dharna. Shiv Kanwar Singh Sandhu, who led the dharna, said the Army authorities were reluctant to open the gate as a result of which they held a dharna. “Initially the Army authorities used to keep the gate open from 6 am to 8 pm but later they closed it permanently. If they failed to open it, we would again launch a mass protest in the coming days,” he claimed. Ram Sehdev, the president of the Citizen Welfare Association, lashed out at the Army authorities and said being a public road it should be opened. “We support the security concern of the Army but they should keep in mind the issues concerning the cantonment residents too,” he claimed. Political battleground
Even as the dharna was held against the Army authorities, it somehow turned out to be political battleground with all the claimants of Jalandhar Cantonment assembly seat reaching the spot.
Sarabjit Singh Makkar, Adampur MLA from the SAD, spoke about the SAD rule in the state and assured the protestors that he would take up the matter with Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar and get it resolved. “Give me the list of your demands and I would get settled soon”, he said. While Gurcharan Singh Channi, Chairman District Planning Board also from the SAD, said the cantonment residents should not be made to suffer at hands of the Army. Shiv Kanwar Singh Sandhu, a claimant from Jalandhar Cantonment seat from the Congress, was leading the dharna and maintained that he would fight for the cause of the cantonment residents. |
