Cheer up, UT budget up by 43 pc 
Education, health get lion’s share

Chandigarh, February 28
Chandigarh has much to cheer about in the 2011-12 Budget presented by finance minister Pranab Mukherjee in Parliament today as there has been a Rs 259.21 crore increase (43%) in the total Budget -- under both the plan and the non-plan heads -- with the total Budget pegged at Rs 2,308.42 crore compared to last year’s figure of Rs 2,049.21 crore.

Without levying any new tax, the General House of the Congress-led Municipal Corporation (MC) in a populist move today approved the budget of ` 812.92 crore for the next fiscal year 2011-12.

Denied roll no, class XII student tries to kill self

A class 12 student of Government Secondary School, Manimajra, Rohit, slit his right wrist in the school premises on Monday after reportedly being refused his CBSE roll number. The incident, which took place in the morning when students were being given roll numbers for their physics examination scheduled for Tuesday, brought to the fore the obnoxious practice of city schools withholding board roll numbers until the last day and threatening students.

PGI to enhance teacher-student ratio
Chandigarh, February 28
In order to increase postgraduate seats in medical courses, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, has decided to enhance its teacher-student ratio. A decision in this regard has already been taken by the academic committee of the institution which was also approved by a government body headed by Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad.
