OPD for elderly at AIIMS a boon
New Delhi, January 25 AIIMS officials said that lack of the proposed 30-bedded general ward, which has been blamed on the paucity of space, has forced the institute to go slow in promoting its services at the geriatric centre even as the clinic happens to be the Capital's first such unit to offer OPD services to the ageing. The elderly patients, 60 years and above, visiting the geriatric clinic are at present adjusted in the medicine wards in case they needed to be admitted. While, in keeping with its mandate under the National Programme of Healthcare for the Elderly (NPHE), the Union Health Minsitry has already issued an order that a geriatric ward be set up, the institute is finding it difficult to identify a place for it. "The geriatric clinic has come as a great help as now the elderly patients do not have to stand in long queues. Also, earlier we had weekly OPDs and since August 2010, we have been seeing 50 to 60 patients everyday. However, the ward facility has not come up yet and patients have to be sent to medicine wards," the chief of the geriatric services at AIIMS, Prof A. B. Dey, told The Tribune. "Ofthe about Rs 288 crore allocated for the NPHE, AIIMS has received between Rs 2 and 3 crore to upgrade the geriatric centre with the general ward, special clinics, facilities for day-care for facilitating comprehensive care to the old patients," informed Dr Dey. The NPHE plan was rolled out in October last year with an idea to make the hospitals elderly-friendly as the number of old patients afflicted by chronic ailments like cataract, dementia, osteoarthritis, hypertension, obstructive pulmonary disease, ischaemic heart disease and type - 2 diabetes mellitus-has been rising. Under the progarmme, 100 districts would be identified in 21 states for setting up a 10-bedded geriatric ward and an OPD. And, for training of experts for geraitric care, an MD programme in geriatric medicine would be introduced in eight regional medical colleges where regional geriatric centres would be instituted and each centre would have a 30-bedded geriatric ward and an OPD facility. |

Make custodian properties leasehold, demands Cong
New Delhi, January 25 Leader of Opposition in MCD J.K. Sharma told reporters that the municipal commissioner should bring a time-bound scheme for converting these rented properties to leasehold ones as it would benefit the civic agency too. He said 10,625 residential and 3,770 non-residential custodian properties were given by the Central government at nominal rents to the refugees who came here from Pakistan during the partition in 1947. These properties were transferred to the MCD in 1966. "In most of these properties situated in areas like Old Delhi, Mehrauli and Lajpat Nagar, the rent is negligible while the MCD is spending Rs 1 crore on their maintenance every year," he said.
