A gang of high-profile, educated robbers busted
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 22
One was an MBA from Amity University, another a regional sales manager with Essar group and third a postgraduate in economics and former MNC executive. They all had one thing in common; they were professional armed robbers.

The south Delhi police has busted the gang which operated along with four associates. The cops were shocked when they came to know of their profiles. They lived lavish lifestyles and needed extra money as their earnings could not finance their luxuries. They robbed their victims at gunpoint and bankrolled their expensive habits with the money.

"We have often arrested individuals with good educational and professional background. But it is not common to find a gang of such people doubling up as robbers," a senior official said.

DCP (south Delhi) HGS Dhaliwal said all three had different reasons to turn robbers. One had lost his job due to recession, another needed money to visit his girlfriend in USA while another turned robber as he was finding it difficult to meeting the demands of wife and girlfriend as well.

The arrested accused has been identified as Naved Khan (30), Mohammad Savez (22), Kuldeep Tomar (28), Ravi Kumar (27), Rahul Pawar (20), Gagan Deep (24) and Neeraj (22).

Naved is a post graduate in economics, Savez is an MBA from Amity University while Kuldeep Tomar is working with Essar Group and pursuing MBA in retail management. "All of these, along with their four associates, were arrested yesterday from the Malviya Nagar area following an investigation into a case wherein robbers got the signature of a victim on the gunpoint for encashing in a cheque," said Dhaliwal.

A US-made pistol, a revolver along with four live cartridges, two robbed cars, two motorcycles, a mobile, a laptop, two golden rings and cash were recovered from them. With their arrest, the south district police has solved the car jacking and house dacoity case of the Amar Colony police station, along with an armed robbery case of the Malviya Nagar police station.

According to Dhaliwal, Naved has worked in various MNCs for the past 10 years in Delhi as an executive, but due to recession he had to go for a salary cut and then eventually was thrown out of the job. "During working in the MNC, he developed relationship with his colleague and started having in a live-in relationship with her. To earn more money and clear his debts, he started committing robberies and car jackings with his associates," said Dhaliwal, adding that, Savez 's father is working in British High Commission while he himself is unemployed. "He is presently unemployed and wanted to visit his girlfriend who is living in Virginia (US). He was earlier arrested in a robbery case in which he and his associates robbed Rs 1 lakh from an executive of Oxygen Company," said the official.

According to the DCP, Tomar's father owns two public schools in Baraut (UP) while his wife is a primary school teacher.

MCD budget: BJP flayed
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 22
The additions made by the Municipal Standing Committee in the proposed expenditure and income of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) Budget for the financial year 2011-12 has drawn flak from the Congress as it has called it an "exaggerated budget".

The Standing Committee chairman while approving the budget, made additions in the projected income of the financial year 2011-12 by Rs 388 crore and Rs 579 crore was added to the expenditure taking the total income to Rs 6,635 crore and total expenditure to Rs 6,943.63 crore. Similarly, the revised income and expenditure for the current year was increased to Rs 6,980 crore and 6,797 crore, respectively, from Rs 6,104 crore and Rs 6,112 crore proposed by the municipal commission in December last year.

The opposition has raised objection as to how the income increased manifold just within a gap of one-and-a-half month after the municipal commissioner presented the budget on December 8 last year. "With the increase in this assumed income, Chandolia put forth many lucrative plans and also unnecessary schemes like foreign tours just to please councillors," said JK Sharma, Leader of the Opposition in MCD.

He accused the ruling BJP of making castles in the air in hope of vague income. "The ruling BJP has used an income of Rs 600 crore earned from Civic Centre and a debt of Rs 500 crore on an interest of 11.5 per cent taken from the Delhi government to pay the salary of its employees. It also, anyhow, managed to pay amount owed to contractors. Even arrears of Group A and B employees have not been paid as per the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission," he said.

For this, Sharma said, the income of Rs 600 crore generated from the Civic Centre is eagerly awaited. The corporation is also anyhow managing to pay its employees. Besides making payment to its employees, the MCD owes a debt of Rs 2,500 crore, approximately. However, he wondered as to why the BJP is not worried on how to meet expenditure.

Some of the budget proposals proposed by the MCD during current financial year have not been able to allocate funds in many areas like Rs 300 lakh for the toilets for women at public places, Rs 25 lakh for Mayor's Discretionary Funds for needy women, Rs 6,800 lakh for the development works in wards with citizens' participation, Rs 100 lakh for the construction of ponds in the village areas, Rs 100 lakh for construction of ponds in the urban areas, Rs 1,000 lakh for construction of nullas in the urban areas, etc.

According to the police, Rampal escaped from the police custody for the first time on October 7, 1993, from the Patiala House Court premises. He was later caught in 1995.

Ensure admission of poor kids: BJP
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 22
The BJP today accused the Delhi government of not taking serious action against schools denying admissions to poor children in the city. The party has demanded the government to take concrete steps to ensure admission to the poor children in nursery free of cost. He informed that many parents were running from pillar to post for getting their children admitted.

"The private school owners have formed a union to strengthen their position. Now they are openly stating that it is not possible to provide admission on 25 per cent reserve seats to the children of the poor section," said Vijender Gupa, Delhi BJP president.

He said the private school owners were working on their own will and the government had failed to take any action against those schools.

"Some school owners have also threatened that they will not be able to provide free admission to the poor children although their schools may be closed. It is surprising that these are the schools which had been allotted lands by the government at cheap rates in the name of providing free admission to the poor children. They have made huge infrastructure on these lands with the help of donations from the parents," he said.

The party called for an inquiry into the income and expenditure of the schools as private school owners are seemingly doing business at the name of education. At present, there are 12 lakhs poor children in the capital who are deprived from the right to education.

"The students of unreserved categories, who have been given admission, are being forced to pay donation. However, the school management has changed the name of donation to the "activity fee" and recovering money in an arbitrary way.

Some schools are demanding fee for the whole year in advance from the parents. It shows that there is no uniformity in the process of Nursery admissions in the schools of Delhi," said Gupta.

MLA takes on DSGMC, writes to PM
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 22
Congress MLA and president of Shri Guru Singh Sabha, Tarvinder Singh Marwah today said that the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC) had a policy of favouritism while appointing chairmen of colleges.

Favouritism will tarnish the image of the Sikh community as well as damage the standards of the colleges, he cautioned.

In a letter written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Marwah, who is the parliamentary secretary of the Delhi government, said, "Tejwant Singh of Skipper Builders who cheated hundreds of people of crores of rupees had been appointed the chairman of Mata Sundari College."

The letter also said, "On January 12, a delegation of Sikhs lead by DSGMC president Paramjit Singh Sarna met you. The meeting was arranged with an intention to divert public attention from their misconduct and corruption in the affairs of DSGMC and the administration of the schools run under its umbrella. The CAG has already initiated an enquiry into Guru Harikrishan Public School at India Gate, Vasant Vihar and Loni Road.

The letter further said that the delegation included "people of dubious character".

Such people spoil the image of the government and party, the letter said.

In the letter, Marwah has requested the Prime Minister to keep away from these dangerous Sikhs.

Marwah said the gurdwara committee was going to construct a parking lot near Gurdwara Bangla Sahib with a cost of Rs 230 crore. But instead of investing money on a parking lot, the committee should work to reopen the Bala Sahib Hospital that has been locked for years.

The Sikh community sacrificed its money and time for getting four acres for the gurdwara and hospital, but the present management committee is not recognising the community's sacrifice, he added.

When asked, as the parliamentary secretary of the Delhi government, what was he doing for the promotion of Punjabi language, Marwah said he would take up the issue with the Chief Minister.

He said he would appeal to her that since Punjabi had been declared the second official language of the state, it should be taught in all the schools located near the areas dominated by Punjabis as well as in MCD schools.

Marwah said next month the Shri Guru Singh Sabha will organise a convention with a theme to improve the educational standards in schools and colleges run by the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, improve services in hospitals managed by the gurudwara committee, protect the Sikh religion and improve the financial condition of the Sikh community.

Some of the works of lensman Dalip Thakuron on display at the exhibition at Khalsa College in New Delhi.

New Delhi, January 22
It was a different experience for the students of Guru Tej Bahadur Khalsa College, Delhi University, at the exhibition of photographs by much-acclaimed photographer Thakur Dalip Singh where he correlated his works with Gurbani.

"This is the first time that someone in the field of photography has tried to correlate the nature and Gurbani in a spiritual way. The younger generation today is very far from understanding Gurbani. This effort was initially visualised so that youngsters can understand the shlokes through the photographs. Every photograph has a corresponding shloke under it that explains the essence of it," said Thakur Dalip Singh, nephew of Satguru Jagjit Singh, spiritual head of Namdhari Sikhs, at the last day of his exhibition today.

A resident of Jiwan Nagar in Sirsa, Dalip Singh, became a photographer in 1977. He is also a founder member of the India International Photography Society.

"The latent message manifested through these pieces of art is peace, harmony, co-existence and universal brotherhood. I am sure that after seeing these photographs, the students will be able to relate to Gurbani better and understand it better. These photographs are bound to leave an everlasting impression in their minds," said Dr Manjit Singh, HoD of Punjabi University of Delhi.

More than 40 photographs are on display in this exhibition. But very soon, Singh plans to showcase other exhibitions, this time with 100 photographs and 100 corresponding shlokes.

"What I plan to achieve is five exhibitions over the next some years with 100 clicks each. And in the end, we will put together all the 50 photographs and the Gurbani shlokes in a book form," said Singh.

Like the Namdhari sect, he follows, his photography has elements of beauty and nature, balanced by mysticism.

"Gurbani speaks about prakriti (nature) and conservation should be our duty. All human's endeavour should be aimed towards the good of humanity," he added.

Here cats and dogs are the stars
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 22
If you are a pet lover then a visit to the three-day International Pet Fair, which ends on Sunday, could be a delightful experience with pet owners from not just Delhi but several countries showing off their cats and dogs.

The annual fair, which is being held in Okhla, certainly seems to be growing in popularity with over 1,000 traders linked to the pet industry taking part in the event.

And there is little doubt as to who are the stars of the show --certainly the animals--, with cuddly dogs, furry cats, colourful birds and rabbits all being head turners.

The fair boasts of all breeds of dog, from the old faithful German Shephard to the fancy Shih-tzu.

A visit to the fair will give you complete information about pet-keeping. Starting from the basic aspect like hygiene to right food and tips on training, experts here are doling out lessons in complete pet care.

Linda Brady Hawke, secretary general of the India Pet Industry Association, said the fair provided a great opportunity to the pet industry as traders could come together on one platform. Hawke said it was also of great help to pet owners and lovers as they could connect better with their pets and realise the joy that they brought to their homes.

Experts, some of whom have come from abroad, said the Indian society was increasingly becoming more acceptable to the idea of having pets. Sadhna Shukla, who is single and works with a telecom firm, said her dog kept the feeling of loneliness away from her and was a great companion. She had brought her dog to the show and said that she had convinced a couple of friends, who were initially not very enthusiastic about keeping pets, to keep dogs.

Among other things, the fair would have catwalk and fancy dress shows by pets.

Gay and happy about it

After India's first gay magazine came out in July last year and made some impact in the metros, it's now the turn of same sex Valentine's cards or greeting cards to make heads turn. These cards have flooded the markets and are everywhere from big malls to small shops in old Delhi and can even be ordered online. And it is not about the cards alone.

Some of the leading bakeries of the city have begun taking orders for custom-made cakes for homosexual couples. Most of them say that when they can bake cakes for the bachelors and bachelorettes' parties, why not for gay couples. "There are presently eight print and online magazines aimed at lesbians and gays in India and many movies have also featured their lives. I think it's a high time now that gay couples are celebrating the Valentine's Day with greeting cards, cakes and other gifts like any other couple," says Nishant Manchanda, a hair stylist at Khan Market, who runs a parlour with his Swiss boyfriend Ketan.

God-fearing SHOs

Is it fear of the almighty or the instructions from their superiors? Almost every second SHO in the Delhi police has activated some devotional ring tone on their mobile phones. Bollywood and pop songs are out. You are more likely to hear Hanuman Chalisa or Shiva Chalisa than any other ring tone after calling on their numbers. When a curious reporter enquired if the change had something to do with the arrival of a new Commissioner, they answered in negative. It transpired that it is a trend which is catching up among the SHOs, who are frequently called by their superiors and residents. A filmy song or a ghazal may be off-putting to a victim of some crime or a prudish boss while a religious number does not offend anybody and could provide succour to some God-fearing victims, an SHO says. The superiors also do not mind it.

A breather for cardiac patients

Cardiac patients, especially the elderly, can now feel safer at Indira Gandhi International Airport. In the event of cardiac arrests, there would be defribrillators, a machine which is needed to deal with emergency heart problems, for offering free-of-cost service to any patient. Most of the total of 20 defribillators planned by Delhi International Airport Limited have already been installed around terminal-III of IGI airport. The step, which has put the airport in league with some leading international airports, comes in the wake of several instances when heart patients either died or their condition worsened due to sudden strokes, said an airport official. Requiring minimal human assistance, the automatic devices are user-friendly and help stabilise heart patients in case of palpitation or falling heart rate.

MLAs hope for reshuffle

The reshuffle in the union ministry has given rise to speculation, particularly among Delhi Congress MLAs, that the city government's ministry would also be revamped in the coming days. In a recent meeting that Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had with party MLAs, a few ministers were in the firing line of several MLAs for their "inefficiency" and were told that they should resign if they could not get things done by the executive. The MLAs alleged that the ministers were unable to discipline the officials who were not attending the meetings of departmental committees. The Chief Minister, it was then suggested, should go for a redesign. After the reshuffle exercise at the Centre, they now say that Dikshit should undertake a bigger revamp, showing the door to non-performing ministers.

Better than a dog's life

In Delhi, it is not just its residents who are suffering from loneliness. It seems that even their pets are not spared the blues of lonely existence. In several parts of the city, pet owners have found a new way to help their lonely dogs and cats to beat the syndrome. They simply gather at parks and other common facilities with their pets in toe for the sake of these hapless animals. Some pet-loving people are taking active interest in bringing together the pet owners. Apart from providing some "family fun" to the pets, it also allows their owners to share and enhance their pet-grooming skills, a pet owner from Green Park says. But it is essentially a pets' get-together. Some dogs are so animated to see their friends, so to speak, that their owners find it difficult to restrain them.
