The areas around Nizamuddin and Jangpura appeared like a virtual fortress with over three thousand police personnel, including men from the paramilitary forces and Rapid Action Force, deployed there to ensure that no untoward incident took place.

The prayer took place in the evening.

Before this, in the morning, nearly nine hundred Muslims offered prayers in front of the Nizamuddin police station after they were reportedly stopped by the police from going to the disputed site for offering prayers.

"To mark our protest, we offered prayers in front of the police station, as the police did not permit entry of more than 100 people to the site," said a protestor.

When asked, police officials quietly replied, "We are not stopping them, but are taking precautions to prevent any untoward incident."

Bukhari, who claimed to have met Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit today, attacked the Congress, saying, "This is a conspiracy. It is not an issue between Hindu and Muslim. Our fight is against the government and the Congress."

He, however, added that Dikshit permitted him to offer prayers at the disputed site.

No heavy vehicle was allowed to enter the Mathura Road stretch from Bhogal to Nizamuddin crossing. The stretch was opened in the evening.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) had demolished the mosque in Jangpura on January 12, saying that the religious structure was illegally built on its land. The demolition was carried out on a high court order.

The demolition had led to violence and communal tension in the area and the police had to resort to lathicharge.

Nursery Admission
Sale, submission of forms close today
Charu Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 14
Saturday dawns as the last day for the sale and submission of nursery admission forms in schools in Delhi. With just one day to go, frantic parents were on the run through Friday to get the admission formalities completed.

January 15 was the date selected by the Delhi government as the last day for both the sale and submission of forms for most schools. However, parents coming under the economically weaker section category or EWS have been granted an additional four days to complete the formalities .

An official of the department of education, said, "Saturday is the last day for both the sale and submission of nursery admission forms. The majority of parents have already completed the formalities . Schools will now spend the next two weeks perusing the forms and making a list of selected students. The nursery admission process in schools across the Capital is being closely monitored to ensure fair and transparent admission . Notices are already being issued to defaulting schools and a close watch will be maintained on them through January."

The official added, "In case of EWS students, parents have been provided an additional four days to get the admission formalities completed. The first list of selected students should come out in the first week of February."

Meanwhile, many parents have already completed the nursery admission process. Reema Bharadwaj, a parent who intends to get admission for her twin daughters this season, said, "I am really worried about my daughters' admissions. We have applied to 12 schools. I don't want to take any chance with their future. If the school of the first choice is not possible, another will do. I hope that both my daughters manage to get admission to the same school."

Another parent, Raja Srivastava, who is trying to get admission for his three-year-old son, said, "I realize that because of EWS nursery admissions this year, it is going to be even more competitive. Most schools have only 50% of their seats on offer after the EWS and the management quota. We have applied to 10 schools so far and I hope my son gets admission in the school of our choice, which is Apeejay School, Pitampura."

He added, "Many schools have been selling both the forms and prospectus together. For instance, the Apeejay School has charged Rs 400 from parents for a pin number required to access the online form. Other schools are charging anything between Rs 200 and Rs 500."

Reena Chhabra, another parent, said, "We have already completed the admission formalities. We reached for the form on the first day itself and submitted it. We applied for my daughter's admission in eight schools spread across Delhi, including Mothers International and Sanskriti School. I hope my daughter makes it to Sanskriti though the admission is going to be very competitive this year."

1.60 lakh people in Delhi have mental disorders
Ananya Panda
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 14
Not a single mental hospital anywhere in the country has an ambulance to attend to a family's call for bringing a patient of mental illness to the hospital! Shocking, it may sound, but that is true if mental health experts are to be believed.

Further, with similar scenario, the national Capital very rightly shares a huge burden of people suffering from mental health disorders, with 1,60,000 people with varying degree of mental stress and derangement here requiring urgent medical help in addition to 16-32 lakh warranting medical advice.

The alarming figures may not be hard to believe as the Capital retains its place among the top slots when it comes to road-rage cases, especially involving the edgy youth, which experts gathering here today to announce the 63rd Annual National Congress of Indian Psychiatric Society 2011 (ANCIPS), attribute to dip in tolerance level among youth right from their growing age.

What is more worrying is that at least 20 per cent of the school-going children in Delhi have pyschological, emotional or stress-associated problems, which call for intervention-from simple counselling to psychiatric disorder-related treatment, said Dr Sunil Mittal, the organising secretary of ANCIPS.

To him, as he stated, "India is in a state of social transition and here the youth having high aspirations and inadequate capability loses it to stress and resultant mental ill health. There is no health without mental health."

According to the chief psychiatrist of Max Healthcare Dr Samir Parikh, crumbling social structure and values are central to the the whole malady and it is promotion of preventive ways though life-skills with focus on school mental health programmes, besides a return of morals that can help.

"Skill education has to be brought about right from the school stage to the corporate offices through workshops. It is important to imbibe the culture of well-being and see that children and young masses become aware of the value-based systems that India boasts of," Dr Parikh stressed.

In this context, while pointing out the sensational quotient that reality telvision shows have, he suggested a better mode of presenation and said, "Reality shows actually make you feel uncomfortable and heartbroken. Now, we realise the importance of the moral education classes we had in the school," reflected Dr Parikh.

Rang Mahotsav: Foreign plays a big draw
Jyoti Rai
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 14
The ongoing Bharat Rang Mahotsav, an annual National School of Drama's theatre festival in the national Capital has caught fancy of many viewers. The festival, half way through, has been noticing houseful shows with requests of tickets pouring in. People are readily sitting in the aisles, standing on all the possible corners of the theatre to watch the plays.

From the works of Habib Tanvir, Girish Karnad, Neelam Man Singh, Pandit Anand and many other established writers and directors, the 13th Rang Mahotsav has much to offer this time. Even the foreign plays with or without English subtitles are finding many takers.

"Some of the Spanish and Chinese plays are already receiving queries for advance bookings. A French mime performance on the last day of the festival will be the last performance of the fest this year. The visibility of foreign plays this year has been terrific and widely enjoyed by our audiences," said one of the ticket selling authorities at Kamani Auditorium.

"The numbers are definitely better than the last year. This year, many shows are running houseful. Not just the famous plays but even the fresh productions are doing well. The festival this year is already a success, and is getting better day by day," said AK Baruha, official spokesperson, National School of Drama.

Some of the plays till now that saw maximum number of crowds include Pandit Anand's Begum Ka Takia, Lushin Dubey's Salaam India, NSD's production Great Expectations and Raj Kumar Rajak's Suraj Ka Saatwan Ghoda.

Over the next week now, Girish Karnad's "Bikhre Bimb", Neelma Man Singh's "A wife's Letter", Mohit Takalkar's "Kashmir Kashmir", Afghanistan's entry to the festival "Stones and Mirror" are some of the most awaited plays.

Girish Joshi's "Khidkiya", Amitabh Srivastav's "Chainpur ki Datan" and Baldev Singh Dhindsa's "Gaddi Charan Di Kaahal Bari Si" are also some of the plays that have already sold more than half the total tickets.

Speaking on the changing trends in Indian theatre and the acceptance amongst Indian audiences, NSD director Anuradha had said earlier at the opening of the festival, "In such a scenario where hybridity rather than cultural authenticity has become the norm, it has become necessary to find new parameters of appreciating contemporary theatre as practised today. And this festival aims to achieve the same."

Amnesty scheme for property tax defaulters

One such scheme was announced today. The scheme provides wavier of interest and penalty on updated payment of taxes.

The scheme is valid only for cases under the Unit Area Method (UAM).

The existing Unit Area Method was introduced in 2004.

"This is the last opportunity to settle the cases under Unit Area Method. Henceforth, the MCD will not launch any amnesty or settlement scheme under Unit Area Method," said Chandolia.

The scheme is open till February 28.

Chandolia said in the event of not availing of the benefits of the scheme by the eligible property owners, they will not be allowed to object to the assessments made under the provisions of the DMC Act and will be liable to pay interest and penalty as per the Act.

Shanti Path gets underpass
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 14
The long-standing demand for construction of an underpass at diplomatic lane Shanti Path was fulfilled today. The underpass was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

It will enable free and safe movement of vehicles as well as pedestrians from Safdarjung Railway Station to North Moti Bagh and vice versa. Also, commuters coming from Ring Road or Rao Tula Ram Marg can use this underpass to reach Safdarjung Railway Station, rather than taking a long detour and U-turn on Shanti Path.

The underpass has been constructed in one year at a cost of Rs 12.33 crore. It has been constructed using box push technique instead of the normal cut-and-cover method, thus avoiding closure of traffic on Shanti Path during construction.

Besides, the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) has commissioned two new electric sub-stations of 33 KV and 66 KV at Raja Bazar and Dr Bishambar Dass Marg, respectively, as a part of its 'electric system strengthening and upgradation work.'

These sub-stations will ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to the adjoining areas of Pt. Pant Marg, Dr Bishambar Dass Marg, Mahadeva Road, Gole Dakkhana, B.K.S. Marg and Gole Market etc.
