Refresher course in chemistry ends
: A three-week refresher course in chemistry, organised by the UGC Academic Staff College of the Guru Nanak Dev University, concluded here today. Renowned chemist and university Vice-Chancellor Prof AS Brar presided over the valedictory function.

Notice to state on paper ‘leak’
: Justice Permod Kohli yesterday issued a notice of motion for February 14 to the State of Punjab, on a petition filed by Gurmit Singh Sran of Faridkot and other candidates, alleging leakage of question paper in the examination conducted by the Punjabi University, Patiala, on July 4 last year. The petitioners claimed that the question paper was leaked to some of the candidates an hour before the written examination was to commence. The petitioners, through the counsel HC Arora, ad sought directions to the state to cancel the written test and not to proceed with the interviews.

Candlelight ceremony held
: Aggarwal College of Nursing and Hospital (Guruharsahai) held a candlelight-cum-nightingale pledge ceremony. Jothi Sophia, principal and Sudha A, vice-principal, administered the oath to the first year students of ANM, GNM, PBBSc (N) and Basic BSc (N) after lightning the candle. The chairman of the college Dr Pawan Aggarwal was the chief guest on the occasion. The students also celebrated Lohri.

Phagwara
Labourer dies of suffocation
: A migrant labourer Bahua (20) died due to suffocation at local model town here in the wee hours on Friday. Suffocation caused by the carbon-dioxide emissions of an angithi are said to be the cause of the death of the deceased, who was found dead in his servant quarter in a kothi, the police said.

Thief nabbed: The Phagwara police nabbed a vehicle thief identified as Baldev Raj of Nakodar and recovered four stolen motor cycles and fake registration certificates from his possession, at the local Khotrra Road on Friday. SHO City Amrik Singh Chahal said the arrested accused was operating in different districts and selling stolen vehicles after preparing fake documents for them.

House burgled: The house of trader Nardeep Singh at nearby Chachoki village, along the national highways on Wednesday night, was reportedly burgled. In his complaint lodged with the local police, Nardeep said he was away to Ludhiana for the treatment of his ailing father Makhan Singh and found, on his return today, that his house had been burgled. The burglars took away 20 tolas of gold ornaments, including two karras, one chain, two rings, ear rings and two gold sets worth more than Rs 4 lakh. Cash worth Rs 45,000 was also stolen from the house.

MC office inaugurated
: Local MLA Harmit Singh Sandhu inaugurated the newly-built office of the local municipal council here today, in a function organised at the council premises. Bhupinder Singh Khera, president of the council, presided over the function. The MLA, in his address, said the building of the council had been constructed with a cost of Rs 25 lakh.

The State Bank of India inaugurated its first financial planning and wealth management centre here on Friday. SK Sehgal, Chief general manager of the bank, inaugurated the centre. The centre will have five customer relation officers, who will make financial plans and offer advisory services to high net worth individuals, to help them fulfill their financial goals like retirement planning, insurance, marriage/education plans for their children, acquiring a new house/car, etc.

Core Group meeting held :
Lt-Gen SA Hasnain, GOC, Chinar Corps, who is also the Security Adviser, chaired the Core Group meeting at BB Cantt, here on Friday. The meeting was attended by DGP Kuldeep Khoda, senior officers of the Army, CRPF, BSF, intelligence agencies and the civil administration, a Defence spokesperson said. Speaking on the occasion, Lt-Gen Hasnain complimented the high-level synergy that existed between all instruments of national and state power in addressing the security concerns of the Valley. He emphasised that the Army had declared this year as the year of the “Kashmiri Awam”.

Mirwaiz welcomes Foreign Secy- level talks: The chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has welcomed the forthcoming Foreign Secretary-level talks between India and Pakistan and says any dialogue process aimed at resolving issues between the two countries will lead to everlasting peace in the region. He was addressing a Friday congregation here.
