In the light of poor response from Sikh voters to get their votes registered ahead of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) elections, fewer Sikh voters were enrolled in Ambala district. He said some patwaris had not submitted the registration forms of the new voters. After the submission of the pending forms, the number of voters would be about 35,000, he claimed.

Play depicts present-day society
Tribune News Service

Fatehabad, September 2
The play “Ab...Tum Bhi Kaho Ardhya!” enacted by noted theatre artiste Rohit Kaushik in Manohar Memorial Postgraduate College here enthralled the audience recently. The 90-minute play staged by the Theatre and Television Department of the college revolved around existentialism; conditions of existence of the individual; his persona; his emotions; actions; responsibilities; and thoughts.

Ardhya, which means love, trust and compassion, is the protagonist and the play orbits around Ardhya’s quest for self; its existence; its origin; and its meaning.

The play begins with Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s “ghama di raat lambi hai, ya mere geet lambe ne, na bhairi raat mukdi hai, na mere geet mukde ne” in the background and the protagonist setting out in the pursuit of self and in the process narrating several stories of love and betrayal. Using the tool of psychoanalysis, the protagonist lays bare several other stories depicting present day society and its ills.

The play also touches the issue of honour killings that have been ailing society in this part of the country and also alludes towards khap panchayats and their hookah puffing self-proclaimed protectors of societal pride.

Through another story, the protagonist tries to convey that how material pleasures and material needs of individuals can sometimes take precedence over love. The play touches instances from Mahabharata and tries to bring home the message of religious and cultural harmony.

In the end, the protagonist succeeds in tracing his origin, which is much beyond the start of civilisations.

Much before the symbol of eternal love Taj Mahal which was built by Shah Jahan, human beings had found words like love and friendship and someone had inscribed on a temple’s wall in Egypt with a pen of metal “I will wait for you”. Since then, love has been kindling the hearts of individuals throughout the globe.

Rohit, who last year gave a record-breaking performance of the play “Chhata Pandav”, played all characters of the play.

Rohit’s name is entered in the Limca Book of World Records when he staged “Chhata Pandav” continuously for 24 hours and 8 minutes, during which he performed the act 25 times on March 8, 2009.

Our Correspondent

Sonepat, September 2
Under directions of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Haryana is the first state in the country that has been making efforts to become polythene-free by 2011.

This was stated by Dr AS Chahal, chairman of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board, while participating as a chief guest in an environment awareness programme at the local Little Angel Senior Secondary School recently. As polythene had played a role in polluting the environment, its manufacturing units in the state have been sealed and necessary sanction has been granted for manufacturing cloth carry bags, he added.

“For a clean and healthy environment, we should plant more and more trees and the state government had set a target of planting 50 crore trees of different varieties,” he said, adding that the board had been organising environment awareness programmes with the help of eco-clubs.

Dr Chahal pointed out those industrial units that had not installed effluent plants and discharge chemically polluted effluents were also responsible for polluting the environment. He asked the owners to install treatment plants to escape penalties.

Deputy commissioner Ajit Joshi said it was everyone’s duty to protect the environment and it had to be a mass movement to achieve the desired results. Though lakhs of saplings were being planted every year, least attention was given for their protection and growth. “Every occasion like birthday, birth of a child, achieving academic or professional qualification, marriage etc should be celebrated by planting trees,” he opined.

Workshop on anti-dengue measures held
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, September 2
A six-hour-long workshop on anti-dengue measures at Ethnic India Tourist Complex in Rai was held here recently. It was concluded with a general consensus that fogging was a health hazardous way for mosquito control having a temporary effect. On the other hand, eco-friendly biological methods are long lasting and pollution-free methods for controlling mosquito breeding.

Clear guidelines were given in this regard to civil surgeons, deputy civil surgeons, biologists and private practitioners of 11 districts, including Sonepat, Rohtak, Bhiwani, Panipat, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Jhajjar, Rewari and Palwal in the NCR area by Dr AC Dhariwal, director of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), and Dr Satbir Chaudhary, director, Health Services, Haryana.

In the workshop, it was recalled that the Supreme Court had banned routine fogging that resulted in various kinds of health hazards. However, in the programme, fogging was recommended in and around the dengue and malaria-positive houses.

According to Dr Chaudhary, routine fogging pollutes the environment, which is punishable under the law of pollution control as it results into lung, nervous and other ailments like allergy, nausea, vomiting and are harmful for asthmatic patients.

Eco-friendly biological methods of the NVBDCP have been considered useful for mosquito control. In one such method, mosquito larvae eating fishes (Gambusia) are released into stagnant water.

Another recommended method was scrub drying of all water containers once a week for controlling mosquito breeding.
