Play depicts present-day society
Fatehabad, September 2 Ardhya, which means love, trust and compassion, is the protagonist and the play orbits around Ardhya’s quest for self; its existence; its origin; and its meaning. The play begins with Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s “ghama di raat lambi hai, ya mere geet lambe ne, na bhairi raat mukdi hai, na mere geet mukde ne” in the background and the protagonist setting out in the pursuit of self and in the process narrating several stories of love and betrayal. Using the tool of psychoanalysis, the protagonist lays bare several other stories depicting present day society and its ills. The play also touches the issue of honour killings that have been ailing society in this part of the country and also alludes towards khap panchayats and their hookah puffing self-proclaimed protectors of societal pride. Through another story, the protagonist tries to convey that how material pleasures and material needs of individuals can sometimes take precedence over love. The play touches instances from Mahabharata and tries to bring home the message of religious and cultural harmony. In the end, the protagonist succeeds in tracing his origin, which is much beyond the start of civilisations. Much before the symbol of eternal love Taj Mahal which was built by Shah Jahan, human beings had found words like love and friendship and someone had inscribed on a temple’s wall in Egypt with a pen of metal “I will wait for you”. Since then, love has been kindling the hearts of individuals throughout the globe. Rohit, who last year gave a record-breaking performance of the play “Chhata Pandav”, played all characters of the play. Rohit’s name is entered in the Limca Book of World Records when he staged “Chhata Pandav” continuously for 24 hours and 8 minutes, during which he performed the act 25 times on March 8, 2009. |
