MC plans setting up
green cremation
system
Jalandhar, August 31 The technique involves the provision of a hood and chimney over the pyre ensuring adequate combustion and minimising wastage of heat. The system also makes use of pyre fabricated of high-grade heat, corrosion and thermal shock resistant alloy steel. The new mechanism termed as “Mokshda” has been devised and is being promoted by a Delhi-based NGO, Paryavaran Evam Van Suraksha Samiti. On a call by the MC officials, the members of the group today gave a presentation on the fuel-efficient technology involved in the process. Anshul Garg, Executive Officer, said only 100 kg of wood was required for a single cremation as against 400 kg in the conventional method. “It takes just two hours for a complete cremation unlike the existing method during which a platform is blocked for three days for one cremation,” he explained. He said new technique would also be acceptable from the religious point of view. “All rituals can be followed unlike as in electric cremation. The ashes are collected in a tray kept below the pyre, which can be removed after cremation and kept safely in a storage rack to facilitate collections later by the family members,”he added. Comparing with the electric crematorium, he said the recurring cost and capital involved was quite low in the “Mokshda” method. The NGO representatives listed certain lesser-known facts during their presentation. They said 50 to 60 million trees are consumed annually for cremation of bodies. The burning of the wood gave rise to 8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide which resulted in global warming. They pointed out that the fuel efficiency could be increased by 70 per cent by this method, thus partly resolving a major environment issue. Mayor Rakesh Rathour and SE (O&M) B.S. Dhaliwal were among those who attended the presentation. |
Better Connectivity Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, August 31 A reference to this context was made by Mayor Rakesh Rathour during a recent public function. While two new ROBs at Lyallpur Khalsa College and Maqsudan have just been opened, the others, including DAV College ROB and Domoria ROB, will open by the next year. The Mayor had included the reference of three bridges and underpasses coming up with the effort of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on the Amritsar route at Chugitti, Verka Milk Plant and Transport Nagar in the process of six-laning of the highway. There are at least three more flyovers coming up as a part of the same project. A flyover coming up at PAP Chowk would facilitate those coming from Phagwara side take a right turn towards Amritsar. This would divide the traffic so that those coming straight towards Jalandhar would be able to follow the left lane to move on the existing road. As a part of the same project, a flyover is also coming up at Rama Mandi where work has already begun. Similarly, the highway authority has sent the drawings for the construction of a ROB atop Bidhipur crossing to the Railways for taking a sanction. The NHAI is also coming up with an underpass in front of Haveli so that the pedestrians would be able to cross over to the other side from beneath the high-speed traffic road. A couple of footbridges, including those in front of Lovely Professional University, are also being planned to facilitate those crossing over to the other side. Within the city, a flyover is under construction at BMC Chowk under a project taken by the Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT). The project is said to have been going ahead of its schedule. The Mayor said an underbridge across the Chandan Nagar railway crossing had also been approved. |
Govt flip-flops leave peon’s daughter in a spot of bother
Jalandhar, August 31 Hoping for a bright future as an engineer, the daughter of a peon had not realised that she would have to go through such a rigorous process and still made to wait for help endlessly. Surviving on a paltry family income of Rs 2,000 a month, Gagandeep is worried that she might have to forego her dream if the scheme does not materialise. “The counseling under the scheme was to begin on July 19 but there has been no information till now. The classes began almost a month back at the PTU-affiliated Rayat Bahra College Hoshiarpur where I had taken admission on the basis of the CET rank. I was asked to pay up for the first semester fee but the amount certainly was beyond our capacity,” she said. Gagandeep’s father is no more. Her mother, who earlier used to wash utensils in houses, is now working as a peon in a factory. The family lives in a one-room accommodation at Guru Nanak Pura East colony. Gagandeep also has a younger brother who is doing plus one from a government school. The student said she personally approached the Deputy Commissioner for help on the fee front. “He was considerate enough to have written to the college management for allowing me concession. They waived off some amount and I was still asked to pay Rs 20,000. This again was an unmanageable amount. We got into contact with an NRI who paid up for the fee”, she said. The financial issues did not end here. “I have now been asked to pay Rs 18,000 as the annual fare for the college bus. I just do not know how I’m going to do that. I cannot always keep on asking people for help. There are seven more semesters to go. I do not know how things will be done”, she expressed her worry adding a word of praise for her college teachers, who have given her sample books for studying. “If I somehow complete B.Tech, I will be the first engineer in the entire family. In fact, I will be the first one to have attended a college. My mother is just eighth pass but she has been doing every bit for me just hoping that there would be better days ahead”, she said. Though Gagandeep has just started pursuing electronics and communication engineering, lack of resources has been a great obstacle for her. She regrets that she does not even know the basics of computer. She narrated an anecdote. “The other day, in college, a teacher started conducting a group discussion. The topic given was the pros and cons of social networking. Since I have never used the internet, I had never heard about the term and sat quietly like a dumb person trying to comprehend what it all was. Later, at a friend’s place I saw a demonstration of various sites like Orkut and Facebook to understand what it all was about. My teachers have been telling us to buy laptops for doing various assignments and projects. But that again is a far-fetched idea”, she said. |
