Gastro patient’s death sparks protest
Ludhiana, August 31
Angered by the death a 26-year-old gastroenteritis patient, Hira Lal, migrant workers living in Sherpur Kalan and Dhandari Khurd staged a protest at the Focal Point road today morning. They expressed resentment at the municipal corporation’s failure to clear the heaps of garbage in these areas and supply potable water.

Assessment notices to traders
Ludhiana, August 31
Traders are in a tizzy after the excise and taxation department has issued assessment notices to them across the city. Notices have been sent for the financial year 2006-07 to those traders where discrepancies have been found in the VAT returns. Nearly 4,000 traders have been served the notices.

GADVASU trains hill farmers on dairy farming

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, trained farmers of Una district of Himachal Pradesh in a three-day training programme on scientific dairy farming, said Dr H.K. FCI workers protest, seek direct payment
Ludhiana, August 31
Activists of the FCI Workers Palledar Union and the Punjab Palledar Union today staged a joint dharna in front of the FCI area manager office and submitted a memorandum demanding implementation of the notification for direct payment to the labour. Addressing the protesters, general secretary of the FCI union Amar Singh Bhattian said the Union Labour Ministry had issued a notification on April 23 for bringing 31 depots of the FCI under direct payment. But the FCI management had failed to implement the notification.

To infuse a sense of social responsibility among students an investiture ceremony was held at BCM School, Dugri, wherein students of senior classes were appointed leaders of the council. Gursimran Singh and Anjani Mishra took the oath as school captains. Navjot, Jasmeet, Nitesh, Jasleen, Amanmeet, Ishu Singla, Ramandeep and Nupur were honoured as house captains of Gulmohar, Kohinoor, Shalimar, and Pukhraj House respectively by chief guest Dr JS Sekhon, Head of Department of Oncology in DMC&H, Ludhiana. SK Mehta, manager of the school, RB Khanna (Education Advisor) congratulated the office -bearers.

Gang of vehicle lifters busted, 3 held

Last evening the local police arrested three members of a notorious gang involved in snatching of vehicles by attacking owners with sharp-edged weapons. The gang members confessed to have thrashed many persons who had tried to resist their attempt to rob them.

Amit Kumar of Phillaur shot a one over 73 to lead after round two of the PGTI Feeder Tour event being played at the Ranjitgarh Golf Club in Phillaur. His total now stands at one under 143.
