Guru Nanak Dev University will send a detailed report of alleged irregularities being committed by B.Ed colleges affiliated to the university to the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE).

Dacoits’ gang busted, 5 members arrested

Acting on a tip-off, a police party, led by SP (D) Darshan Kumar, DSPs Amrik Singh and Rajeshwar Singh Sidhu, raided a place near the guide bundh at the Bhangi choe last night and arrested five members of a dacoits’ gang when they were preparing to commit a dacoity. However, their three accomplices escaped.

Snatchers attacked an LIC employee and took away gold ornaments from her while she was entering the gate of her house in Mota Singh Nagar in broad daylight here today.

Soaring mercury has claimed four lives in the past three days in the city. Nanak Chand, 60, resident of Santokhpura locality, was found dead in his rented accommodation this morning.

The Garhshankar police last night booked Sarjivan Sahni and his brother Inder Sahni, sons of Rajan Sahni of Samundra, under sections 363, 366 and 120-B of the IPC for abducting a teenaged girl of their village.

Education Dept staff hold dharna
Nawanshahr, June 23
On the call given by the Punjab State Education Department Ministerial Staff Union, the district unit of the union, led by its president Pawanjit Singh Sidhu, held a dharna in front of the office of the District Education Officer here in support of their demands, which includes, starting process of promotions, scrapping condition of test for granting promotion in master cadre to ministerial staff under 1 per cent quota, replacing condition of type test with computer training for the clerical staff, filling the posts in new districts and formulating a policy of adjustment for the ministerial staff transferred under rationalisation. — OC

Irregularities committed by B.Ed colleges

Guru Nanak Dev University will send a detailed report of alleged irregularities being committed by B.Ed colleges affiliated to the university to the National Council of Teachers Education (NCTE).

The decision was taken during the Syndicate meeting of the university, chaired by Vice-Chancellor Dr A.S. Brar here today.

The university also decided to start BCA course at Shaheed Ram Singh Pathania Memorial College, Niari, from the current academic session besides reducing the admission and tuition fees for candidates seeking admission to various courses in the Department of Music.

Dr Inderjit Singh, Registrar of the university, while detailing the proceedings of the Syndicate meeting alleged that many B.Ed colleges affiliated to the university had been flouting the norms by charging exorbitant fees from the students while bothering a little to recruit the requisite staff for education.

Taking a serious note of this, the university authorities had directed these college officials to mend their ways a number of times, but the university remained flooded with the complaints against them, said the Registrar.

Meanwhile, he said in view of providing quality education to the students of the backward district of Gurdaspur, the university Syndicate had allowed BCA course at Shaheed Ram Singh Pathania Memorial College, Niari.

Meanwhile, the results of BA/B.Sc Part-II and Bachelor of Food Science and Technology (Honours) Part-IV held by the university in April, 2010, had been declared and were available on the university website, www.gndu.ac.in.

Dacoits’ gang busted, 5 members arrested

Hoshiarpur, June 23
Acting on a tip-off, a police party, led by SP (D) Darshan Kumar, DSPs Amrik Singh and Rajeshwar Singh Sidhu, raided a place near the guide bundh at the Bhangi choe last night and arrested five members of a dacoits’ gang when they were preparing to commit a dacoity. However, their three accomplices escaped.

SSP Rakesh Aggarwal said in a press release here today that the police seized five pistols (two each of 7.65 mm and .12-bore and one of .303 bore) and 14 live cartridges from them. The arrested persons, identified as Giani Gujjar, alias Darshan Kumar, alias Mani Chohan, his brother Dinesh Chohan, alias Mintu Gujjar, sons of Joginder Pal of the local Model Town, Sukhwinder Singh, alias Sonu, son of Charan Das of Gobindpur Khun-Khun, Amandeep Singh, alias Aman, son of Jasvir Singh of Lambra Kangri, and Upkar Singh, alias Sonu, son of Sewa Singh of Bakhlan, were booked under sections 399 and 402 of the IPC in the Model Town police station. Besides, five cases under sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act had also been registered against them.

Giani Gujjar and Sukhwinder Singh, who were heads of this gang, had created a scare among the public. The gang used to collect hafta from rehriwalas near the bus stand. With the arrest of these gang members, the people of the town have heaved a sigh of relief.

As many as five cases of criminal nature had been registered against gang leader Giani Gujjar, three against Sukhwinder Singh, one each against Dinesh Chohan, Amandeep Singh and Upkar Singh, said Aggarwal.

LIC employee robbed of gold ornaments

Jalandhar, June 23
Snatchers attacked an LIC employee and took away gold ornaments from her while she was entering the gate of her house in Mota Singh Nagar in broad daylight here today.

The assailants, two motorcycles-borne youths, were chasing Amarjit Kaur from her office in Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, claimed Ashwani Kumar, SHO, Division No 6 police station. He said the snatchers stopped Amarjit Kaur while she was approaching the gate of her house and asked her to handover cash and valuables to them. As the woman resisted, one of the snatchers assaulted her on the head leaving her senseless for a few minutes, snatched gold jewellery and sped away.

A case has been registered on Amarjit’s complaint. — TNS

60-yr-old found dead at home
Soaring mercury claims 4 lives in three days in city

Jalandhar, June 23
Soaring mercury has claimed four lives in the past three days in the city. Nanak Chand, 60, resident of Santokhpura locality, was found dead in his rented accommodation this morning.

Sukhjit Singh, SHO, Division No 3 police station, said the deceased was a native of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Nanak was found dead in sitting posture in a chair inside his room. Blood was oozing out of his nostrils. Nanak Chand was taken to the Civil Hospital where the doctors declared him “brought dead”.

Ramesh Lal, resident of Jindowal village in Nawanshahr district, who was a trainee jawan with the Indian Reserve Battalion, reportedly died due to heat stroke on Tuesday.

An unidentified person was found dead in a public park in the Model House area on June 21. The police also claimed to have found a body of an unidentified youth in the Company Bagh on the same day. Both deaths were claimed to have occurred due to heat stroke.

The Garhshankar police last night booked Sarjivan Sahni and his brother Inder Sahni, sons of Rajan Sahni of Samundra, under sections 363, 366 and 120-B of the IPC for abducting a teenaged girl of their village.

According to police sources, the case has been registered on the complaint of Mamta Devi, wife of Nitya Nand of the same village.

Mamta Devi alleged that the accused had abducted her 14-year-old daughter Sanjana Kumari, who had been studying in Class VII, on the evening of May 5.

In another case, the Garhshankar police last night booked Vishal, son of Suresh Kumar of Haibowal, Naveen Kumar, son of Des Raj, Chopa and Suraj, all of Garhi Mansowal, under sections 323, 341, 308, 382, 506 and 34 of the IPC.

According to police sources, driver of Orbit bus (PB-03U-0715) Gurdip Singh, son of Sikander Singh of Goindwal (Ludhiana), alleged that on the evening of June 21 the accused, who were on a motorcycle, intercepted his bus and beat him up. Before fleeing, the accused also snatched a bag containing Rs 8,000 from bus conductor Balkar Singh.
