Much to the dismay of district education authorities, not even a single Class X student of government schools across the district made to the merit list of first 350 students, which was released today by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB).

It’s a celebration time for Hardeep Kaur, a student of Shaheed Baba Khushaal Singh Senior Secondary School, Lambra, who bagged the first rank in the district in the  Punjab School Education Board Class X examination, which was declared today.

Prescribe drugs available in Jan Aushadhi stores: DC
Jalandhar, June 14
Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti today strictly directed the district health authorities to preferentially prescribe the drugs available in the Jan Aushadhi stores. In official communication with Civil Surgeon and Medical Superintendent, Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, Bharti directed that the respective authorities in hospitals and health centres should made it possible that instead of prescribing drugs which are available at high prices in the market, doctors should recommend cheaper alternative drugs available in the Jan Aushadhi stores.

459 cases of child labour detected in Punjab: Sud
Hoshiarpur, June 14
As many as 459 cases relating to the Child Labour Act have recently been detected in Punjab. Disclosing this in a statement issued here last evening, the office of Minister for Medical Education and Research, Labour, Forest and Wildlife and Parliamentary Affairs Tikshan Sud said that previously only 91 cases had been detected since enforcement of the Child Labour Act in the state.

The activists of the Blood Donors Council and students of the MR City Public School and ITI, Balachaur, adorned in a special dress and holding special red-coloured umbrellas, took out an awareness rally in Balachaur sub-division in the district to mark the World Blood Donor Day on Monday.

Much to the dismay of district education authorities, not even a single Class X student of government schools across the district made to the merit list of first 350 students, which was released today by the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB).

The PSEB today released merit list of 403 students. Ten students of district Jalandhar have secured their names in the list. Ironically, government schools contributed just one name to the list of 10.

The only student who proved as a face-saver for government schools is Sidakpreet Singh of Government High School, Baloki, who has bagged 351st position in the merit list.

Joginder Das, District Education Officer, said that we were into the process of improving the standards of government schools. “It always takes time for a tree to bear fruits”, said Das.

Hardeep tops in district

It’s a celebration time for Hardeep Kaur, a student of Shaheed Baba Khushaal Singh Senior Secondary School, Lambra, who bagged the first rank in the district in the 
Punjab School Education Board Class X examination, which was declared today.

Hardeep, daughter of Narinder Singh and Kuldeep Kaur of Partapra village, secured 23rd rank in the state.

This achievement is another feather in her cap. Earlier, she also secured first rank in the district and 72nd rank in the state in the Class VIII examination.

“She always bagged first position right from Class I to X and studied in the same school since Class I,” said her mother Kuldeep Kaur.

Talking to The Tribune, Hardeep said she wants to become a software engineer and had already got admission in non-medical stream in Class XI.

“My teachers, parents and my elder sister are my source of inspiration,” said Hardeep, whose father is settled in England for the last three years.

Beside this, Ramanpreet Singh of Tagore Model Senior Secondary School, Nakodar secured second and Neha of Shining Star Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar, bagged third position in the district. Sukriti and Akansha of New Saint Soldier School, Jalandhar, bagged fourth and fifth rank, respectively, in the district.

Prescribe drugs available in Jan Aushadhi stores: DC

Jalandhar, June 14
Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti today strictly directed the district health authorities to preferentially prescribe the drugs available in the Jan Aushadhi stores. In his communication, he also demanded proposal for quantity and types of drugs required at the stores from the health authorities. He said such stores were opened for poor patients who cannot afford to purchase costly medicine from private chemists shop. Nearly 250 types of medicines were made available at the stores. — TNS

459 cases of child labour detected in Punjab: Sud

As many as 459 cases relating to the Child Labour Act have recently been detected in Punjab. Disclosing this in a statement issued here last evening, the office of Minister for Medical Education and Research, Labour, Forest and Wildlife and Parliamentary Affairs Tikshan Sud said that previously only 91 cases had been detected since enforcement of the Child Labour Act in the state.

As per the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in writ petition No 65 of 1986, the offenders of these cases were being challaned for Rs 20,000 each.

The fine of more than Rs 80 lakh realised from the defaulters would be deposited in the District Child Labour Rehabilitation and Welfare Fund. Sud stated that one adult member each of the child labour victim’s families would be provided employment. In case no employment could be provided the government would deposit Rs 5,000 for each child in the fund.

Cases in Districts: During 2,447 raids, 31 cases in Amritsar and Tarn Taran, 24 in Bathinda and Mansa, 21 in Fatehgarh Sahib, 46 in Ferozepur and Gurdaspur, 27 in Hoshiarpur, 98 in Jalandhar and Nawanshahr, 11 in Kapurthala, 55 in Ludhiana, 48 in Moga, Muktsar and Faridkot, 29 in Mohali and Ropar, 19 in Patiala and 50 in Sangrur and Barnala had been detected.

Maharana Pratap’s birth anniversary

Hoshiarpur, June 14
The Punjab Government will organise a state-level function to celebrate the 471st birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap in Garhshankar town of this district on June 15.

Disclosing this at a joint press conference here, Sanyukat Kshatriya Mahasangh president Capt Vikram Singh (retd) and Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha senior general secretary Ajay Singh said Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, ministers Sewa Singh Sekhwan and Tikshan Sud, chief parliamentary secretaries Nand Lal and Sohan Singh Thandal, Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna and members of the Rajput community from all over the state would participate in the function. The government has already named the inter-state bus terminus of Pathankot after Maharana Pratap. — OC

Awareness rally marks Blood Donor Day

Nawanshahr, June 14
The activists of the Blood Donors Council and students of the MR City Public School and ITI, Balachaur, adorned in a special dress and holding special red-coloured umbrellas, took out an awareness rally in Balachaur sub-division in the district to mark the World Blood Donor Day on Monday.

The rally was flagged off by G.S. Brar, Tehsildar, Balachaur, from the office of the SDM and it passed through Nawanshahr Road, Bhaddi Road, Gahun Road, Garhshanker Road, Dana Mandi and Gurdwara Nanak Dham Road.

The literature motivating the masses to donate blood for saving the precious human lives in distress was also distributed throughout the route. The blood donors and motivators were also honoured.

The activists of the BDC, including Gurinder Singh Toor, Pushap Raj Kalia, Jaspal Singh Gidda, Inderjit Sareen, Joga Singh Sadhra, Surinder Kaur Toor, Rajinder Kaur Gidda, BJP leader Varinder Kaur Thandi, Harpreet Kaur Bhatti, principal, Balwinder Kaur, principal, DSP, Satinder Pal Singh, among others, were present on the occasion.

Phagwara: World Blood Donors Day was celebrated by the Civil Hospital authorities with the assistance of the Hindustan Welfare Blood Donors Club on the hospital premises today. Senior Medical Officer Dr Rajiv Gupta inaugurated a blood donation camp, in which 31 persons donated blood. Blood donors were honoured on the occasion.
