Jalandhar, June 12
Parents of kids suffering from thalassemia in the region need not rush to Chandigarh every month to get the drug for their afflicted children as the Thalassemic Children Welfare Society, Jalandhar, has made the drug available in its centre at the Civil Hospital here.

Earlier the drug, which is essential to clear the toxic iron accumulated in the patient’s body after repeated cycles of blood transfusion, was available only at Chandigarh. Besides medicine cost of Rs 1,200-1,800 per month, families had to spend hundreds of rupees on travelling.

“Most of the kids registered with our society belong to poor families. Some of them are even not able to bear medicine costs. Travelling 250 km just to get the medicine sounds unnecessary for such families whose breadwinners are daily wagers and cannot spare even one day to go to Chandigarh,” said society secretary T.S. Bhatia.

Dr Gagandeep Singh, Blood Transfusion Officer, Civil Hospital, said earlier the parents had to get the drugs prescribed from the doctors concerned in the PGI. “Now the drug will be available even on the prescription of local doctors. Earlier there was some technical or legal hitch, owing to which the company was not supplying the drug to this region,” he added.

Nearly 70 thalassemic kids are registered with the society and the blood of all these children is replaced free of cost in the ward which is functional in the Blood Bank, Civil Hospital.

“We are trying to rope in some philanthropists so that the medicine could be
provided at concessional rates to poor patients,” said Dr Gagandeep Singh.

Jalandhar, June 12
A Rs 3-crore joint project of the Irrigation Department and the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, of building a bypass from Nakodar to Kapurthala is finally going to take shape. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will inaugurate the project, which includes the stretching of the 120-foot road from Babrik Chowk to Kapurthala road, tomorrow morning.

As per the plan, the kutcha road along the Bist Doab Canal will be made of concrete and a skew bridge constructed across it so that commuters are able to bypass Kapurthala Chowk and avoid all other bottlenecks on the route. The plan will take another three years to get accomplished.

Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Bhatia gave a outline of the project during an interaction with the media here.

He said the MC would construct the bridge at a cost of Rs 58 lakh, while the irrigation authorities would participate in paving the road along the canal. He said the plantation and lighting work along the passage would also be taken care of by the MC. Commuters between Nakodar and Kapurthala will reap the maximum benefit as the new route will cut their journey short by at least half an hour. They will no longer have to take a longer detour via Mahavir Marg and Kapurthala Chowk.

Instead, coming from Nakodar side they will be able to enter Model House from Ravidass Chowk and move towards Babu Jagjeevan Ram Chowk towards the 120-foot road. Even those coming from the cantonment side will be able to follow the road via Garha Road, Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, Basti Sheikh and Babrik Chowk.

The new route will further save time as commuters will be able to avoid all traffic lights at BMC Chowk, Guru Nanak Mission Chowk, Nakodar Chowk, Football Chowk and Kapurthala Chowk. MC employees are already in the process of clearing the blocked passage at the tail-end of the otherwise wide road and making it four-laned for the smooth movement of the traffic.
