Yet another honour killing
New Delhi, June 21 While the woman Monica (24) was found dead with some sharp weapon injuries inside the couple's rented house, her husband Kuldeep (26) found shot dead in his car outside the same house located in phase III of Ashok Vihar. The couple belonged to different communities--while Kuldeep was a Jat, Monica was a Gujjar. According to information, seven persons from Monica's family, including her brother and father, have been arrested. Kuldeep's family had expressed their suspicion on Monica's elder brother Ankit and her cousins Cittu and Pammi, who are all absconding. The couple resided in house number 1/68, owned by one Sunil Agarwal. The matter came to light around 8.30 pm when a friend of the couple called at their house and found Monica dead. "Some neighbours who knew Ajit Singh, Kuldeep's father, informed him of his daughter-in-law's murder even as they tried to get in touch with Kuldeep. But despite repeated calls, there was no response. Within an hour, some security guards found his body in his car a few metres from their apartment," said a police official from Ashok Vihar police station adding that the Esteem car in which Kuldeep was found dead had evidence of resistance by the victim.Police also discovered friendly entry into the house indicating that someone known to Monica came visiting her. The neighbours have told police that they did not hear any gunshots or sounds of scuffle. "No one heard anything. However, some neighbours close to couple have told us that they were receiving threats from Monica's family," said the official. Kuldeep is said to have been an employee of HCL in Gurgaon while Monica was a housewife. According to Ajit Singh, Monica's family had never accepted their marriage. "When they got married in 2006, we did not accept their relations initially. After a while, we reconciled to their marriage. However, Monica's family was always against my son. They have now killed him," alleged Ajit in his statement to the police. He also charged that Kuldeep had earlier been attacked by Monica's family and he had sought police protection from the court in 2006. "We suspect the case to be of honour killing but we cannot confirm it now. We have arrested a few people from Monica's side and interrogations are on," said N S Bundela, DCP, adding that a clear picture will emerge only after getting the postmortem report. This is the second case of honour killing in the Capital within a week after a teenaged couple were found electrocuted by the girl's family in Swaroop Nagar. |
Ammo peddlers caught for links to Naxals
Ghaziabad, June 21 The SSP said teams of police circle officers and SDMs have been constituted to check the stock at the licensed arms and ammunition shops in different areas. Action will be taken on the basis of report of these teams. He said police had got a tip-off that some people were to pass from NH – 24 with a consignment of illegal arms and ammunition on way to Delhi. Police shortly spotted two persons near the Jal Nigam crossing moving in suspicious circumstances. They were caught in the evening on Sunday. They identified themselves as Mohd Shahid and Moti. Police is now trying to trace the leader of this gang. The SSP said a lot of illegal arms and ammunition had flooded the market these days. It is quite possible that these gangs are engaged in supplying the arms and ammunition to the Naxal-affected areas. The teams of SDMs and police circle officers will check stock at licensed arms shop and submit a report after which a coordinated campaign will be launched to stem the flow of illegal arms. |
Scorching heat, loadshedding make life miserable
New Delhi, June 21 With the temperature touching 46.7 degree Celsius on June 20, the hottest day of the year, the national Capital created a record today when its electricity demand touched 4,668 MW in the afternoon, the highest ever. This surpassed the earlier high of 4,581 MW recorded on May 24. The highest demand met last year was 4408 MW on July 8. The power demand in Delhi has galloped over the years. “The first four months have been the hottest on record in the last 100 years in north India and if this trend is anything to go by, 2010 could well be the warmest year in history. And there is no sign of this trend abating. At 46.7 degree Celsius, yesterday was the hottest day of the year,” said Transco officials. The residents of Patpargunj in east Delhi complained of power cuts in their area for two to three hours in the afternoon, due to tripping of a transformer in a 220 KV grid. However, the officials of Delhi Transco said that the power load was adjusted to the other transformer and there were no outages in the area. The highest demand met during the month of June in 2009, 2008 and 2007 was 4337 MW, 3822 MW and 4030 MW ,respectively. |
Thirsty at Tis Hazari!
New Delhi, June 21 The courts complex has no cold drinking water for the visitors and hundreds of lawyers despite the existence of many water coolers. This is because almost all these coolers are defunct. The only people happy with the situation are the water sellers, who charge Re 1 for every glass of water and have no dearth of customers in the summer season. “It is pitiable that such a big court cannot offer water to us,” said Savita
Devi, a middle-aged wife of a man facing murder trial at a sessions court here. “For every hearing, I come here with homemade food for my husband, who comes from the Tihar Jail. But for water, I have to spend about Rs 15 every time.” All the water coolers here are either dry or nonfunctional. Even after several complaints regarding the poor condition of the water coolers made by the court staff, nothing has been done yet. “We are facing a lot of trouble as we have to go on each of the floors to check if any of the water coolers is functioning. It is very disappointing to see that such a big district court has no proper drinking water facility,” said a lawyer. The real sufferers are the poor litigants, who sit on the floor outside the court with their children and family. Usually, these people land up in the court in groups of seven-eight and cannot spend Rs 15 on distilled water. “Outside the court, across the road, there is a tap from where we fill water bottles. We cannot afford the distilled water and there is no water inside the court. It looks like people are being harassed in all possible ways,” said Ram Kishore (60) whose son is an accused in two murder cases. Even the court staff has nothing different to say. “The scorching heat outside is not the only thing that is making people suffer here. We have been complaining about water problems for more than a month, but the bar association is not listening. We are left with no choice but to buy water bottles,” said a court staff. What makes the situation more severe is the fact that currently the regular courts are almost closed and only the vacation courts are working. But once the regular courts reopen in July, the problem will surely become more acute. |

Monsoon to be free of
waterlogging, claims MCD
New Delhi, June 21 “We have already completed one round of de-silting and only 15 per cent of the work is left in the second round. The roads will be in a better condition in this monsoon and will not face waterlogging,” said Subhash Arya, Leader of House in MCD. Waterlogging has been a major annual problem for the Delhiites in the month of monsoon. However, this year, the officials have claimed that the desilting work has been taking place continuously throughout the year in view of the Commonwealth Games. According to the civic body officials, the MCD has already desilted all the 1,048 drains. The civic body looks after 1,550 small and big drains in the entire Capital. Though some works in some areas are incomplete, the officials said that they would be concluded by June-end. “There is only some work left in zones like Civil Lines and Shahdara (south). Both the zones are important in terms of the Commonwealth Games. The MCD has been able to take out more silt than estimated. The work of desilting has been carried out throughout the year since July 2009,” said an official of the department of environment management services (DEMS). The official also said that the civic body was installing silt chambers along the drains, which will sieve out the silt at an early stage. The MCD has also procured special equipment like super sucker machines worth crores of rupees. “We have purchased super sucker machines and JCBs and order for procurement of a few more machines has already been placed,” said the official. In order to leave no stone unturned in the matter, the MCD had transferred all the works of cleaning of drains in all municipal zones to the department of environment management services . Earlier, the desilting of drains in some of the zones was done by the engineering department. |

Govt nod to hike in auto, taxi fares
New Delhi, June 21 Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit justified the decision, saying rise in prices of natural gas has left the government with no option but to heed to the demand of the auto unions for increase in fare. “Because of the hike in gas price, the auto fare has to be increased. We discussed the issue thread-bare and decided to effect the hike. The new rates will be announced by the Transport Department either tomorrow or day after tomorrow,” Dikshit said after the cabinet meeting. Although Dikshit did not give the quantum of the hike, Transport department officials said the minimum fare will be increased from current Rs 10 (first one km) to Rs 20 (for first two kms). Subsequently, per km fare after the first two km will be Rs 6.50. Currently Rs 4.50 is taken per km after the first one km. They said the minimum fare for yellow and black taxis will go up from Rs 15 to Rs 20 for first one km while the rate will be Rs 12 instead of current Rs 8.50 for subsequent
kilometre. The fare of radio taxis which charge a flat rate of Rs 15 per km is likely to be increased to Rs 20, they said. Transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely is expected to announce the new fare structure for auto and taxis tomorrow. The government’s move comes after autorickshaw unions threatened to go on a strike after the Centre decided to hike the CNG rate. They had been contending that since the price of the natural gas has been hiked five times in the past one year, they need a hike in the fare structure too. The CNG rate has gone up by Rs 5.60 per kg - from Rs 21.90 to Rs 27.50 per kg. Last time, the Delhi government had effected a raise in the fares of autorickshaws and taxis in 2007. Officials of the transport department held a meeting with the autorickshaw unions to finalise the fare structure and also told them to make sure that auto drivers comply with metres after the fare hike. They also told the unions that GPS should be installed in all autorickshaws and sought their cooperation in this. Rajendra Soni, head of the autorickshaw unions in Delhi, welcomed the government’s decision and said the unions will make sure that metres are complied with. “We are with the government on the issue of complying with the metres and will make sure that all autos are run on
metres.” — PTI |
3 credit card cheats held
New Delhi, June 21 According to the police, the accused have been identified as Kamal (24), Bobby (35) and Vijay Soni, all residents of east Delhi. They were arrested in the last couple of days. According to HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south), the gang had planned to collect the data of international cards during the forthcoming Commonwealth Games and for that purpose they were in contact with several persons working in five star hotels where foreigners and players would stay. During interrogation, it was revealed that Kamal lured sales boys working at petrol pumps and other outlets to swipe the cards of customers to the data reader provided by the accused. After getting the desired data, they attached the data reader to computer and got all the data transferred to their computer and then with the help of data writer prepared clone of credit/debit cards. "They purchased expensive items like gold ornaments and mobile phones from the shops and then sold them to take the cash. They also involved some shopkeepers, especially goldsmiths, in their gang and swiped the fake cards at their shops without purchasing any articles," said

Three criminals caught after encounter
Ghaziabad, June 21 SSP Raghuvir Lal said these criminals were wanted in various cases in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Bagpat, Meerut and Aligarh for loots, dacoities and other heinous crimes. He said Satya Sheel was a notorious criminal of Hafizpur Kotwali. He is a cousin of notorious gangster Jatan Sirohi who was killed in an encounter. He is known as Titu Killing Machine in the world of crime. Police got a tip-off that criminals of the Titu gang were expected to loot factory in the industrial area of Ghaziabad. The gang planned to loot cash from the electricity department in Modinagar. On getting information, SHO Yogesh Pathak of Sihani Gate Kotwali and SOG team surrounded the gangsters near Shyam Prasad Mukherji Park. On seeing the police, the criminals started firing and tried to flee in an Esteem car. Police chased them to Chipyana crossing gate, which was closed. Here the criminals abandoned the car and started running in different directions. The police team arrested three of them while two, Shibu and Deepak, gave them the slip. |
2 men charged with attacking cops, acquitted
New Delhi, June 21 Additional sessions judge M.R. Sethi acquitted Harminder Singh and Sakendu Prasad, saying, “The prosecution failed to bring the true and complete facts before the court.” According to the prosecution, the accused had on August 9, 2003 injured two Delhi police constables, Baljeet and Sandeep, with a knife at a restaurant in the area of the Mukherjee Nagar police station. The court also took note of the fact that one of the accused, Harminder, could barely walk and so could not have chased the constables. Baljeet and Sandeep had claimed that they were chased by the accused. They had claimed that Harminder ran after them for 20-25 yards. The court questioned how could two young Delhi police officials who had undergone commando training apart from other martial arts and were 5 feet 9 inches and 6 inches tall and weighed 79 kg and 80 kg could be chased by a person who could barely walk. In their defence, the accused had claimed that at the time of the incident, the police constables were drunk and were involved in a quarrel with a group of people at the restaurant and that they mistook them for those who were involved in the quarrel. |
BJP seeks CBI probe into illegal
land sale
New Delhi, June 21 “Actually there is a nexus between the revenue department, politicians, the Delhi government and the police,” Vijender said. The revenue department is equally responsible and appears to be hand in glove with the land mafia. The construction of pucca structures is not an overnight job, he said. Almost all of the victims are migrants from UP and Bihar who have lost their savings. He alleged that the Congress has failed to fulfil its promises made at the time of Assembly elections. Even the 1,217 illegal colonies, out of 1,639, have been issued provisional certificates . There appears a hidden agenda in not declaring the colonies authorized to benefit the land mafia. |
Police posts run from tents, kiosks in Noida
Noida, June 21
These structures even lack the basic facilities like water and seating arrangements. On hot sunny days or during rains, even the policemen have to take shelter in nearby buildings. At Sector 9, the police functions from a temporary kiosk which does not have sitting space for more than two persons. The kiosk is placed on a footpath. The police post in Sector 37 functions from under a tree on a busy road. At Sector 55, Khoda police post functions from a tent pitched on a crossing. This post does not even have enough space for a policeman to take rest. The Nithari police post functions from a two-room building near the gate of Sector 26. The CEO of Noida in 1995, Prashant Kumar Mishra, had set up three police posts with help from public sector companies like Bharat Petroleum. These posts were built in Sector 55-57, 1 and 50. Later, regular police posts in Sector 12-22, 18, 19 and Atta Chowk were set up. |
Fasting keeps diseases at bay
New Delhi, June 21 According to doctors, the benefits of fasting go down the drain if the stomach is loaded with high-calorie food before or after the fast, given the fact that in the process the body tends to engage in accumulation of more calories compared to what it loses by fasting. This condition instead of strengthening the system against ailments raises the level of cholesterol in the blood, thereby increasing the chances of a cardiac attack. “Fasting, inducing growth hormones and promoting metabolism, acts as a safety wall against ill health but only if it is practised in a disciplined manner rather than observing them on a casual manner for dieting or only on religious grounds,” said Dr KK Aggarwal, president of the Heart Care Foundation of India. |
