Nanda quizzed again; driver’s family alleges threat calls
New Delhi, June 19 Meanwhile, the victim's brother Yogeshwar today filed a complaint that his family was receiving threat calls since Friday from a number that belonged to an employee of Nanda. Yogeshwar alleged that some one, identifying himself as Dhiru Singh, had been calling his family since Friday. The caller is using a number that belongs to Dheeraj Balani, who works for Nanda and also visited them in hospital. The family of Sharma, who had served as an Armymen earlier, is also planning of filing a writ petition in the Delhi High Court. They have expressed dissatisfaction over the police investigation. Sharma's family has alleged that the "police is trying to save the accused". However, Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat maintained that the police was carrying out an impartial probe. "We had interrogated Nanda and his associates on Friday. Since this morning we are verifying all calls made by them," Bhagat said. He added that additional CP (south-east) was heading the investigation. On June 9, Sharma was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital with 80 per cent burns. On June 15, he succumbed to his injuries. According to sources, what has further indicted the police is Sharma's statement blaming Nanda and his associates for the fire that finally claimed his life. The victim did not like Nanda's "sexually exploiting boys". The police had registered a murder case but no one has been arrested yet, even when more than 20 people have been questioned. Additional CP (south-east) Virender Singh Chahal had said that the case was initially registered under Section 307 of the IPC against unknown person(s) as the victim had not named any one who allegedly set him on fire. The police will reportedly consider the tapes it sought from CNN-IBN news channel that had telecast a burnt Sharma making allegations from his hospital bed. In his dying declaration, Sharma had alleged that Nanda along with his business partner Jitender Pandey and manager Dheeraj Balani set him on fire when he protested against the sexual exploitation of boys at Nanda's New Friends Colony residence. The deceased was working for over two years at Nanda's C-12 New Friends Colony house. |
To fill
seats in less opted courses Ananya Panda Tribune News Service
New Delhi, June 19 The step would enable the institute to tackle the problem of vacancies created in departments like anatomy, pharmacology, biochemistry, microbiology, forensic medicine, which have been witnessing a significant waste of infrastructure. "All candidates who have got 50 per cent are eligible for counselling. This year, the number of candidates to be called for counselling has been raised to eight times the seats available. This has been done to ensure that the seats which remain vacant after students leave them for better options are filled," said Dr Sunil Chumber, sub-dean, AIIMS. In the last session, about 25-30 per cent of the total seats remained vacant as about four months after the counselling, students left the institute. To solve the problem, AIIMS has also hiked the number of seats, said Dr Chumber. When around June 10, the institute issued notices in leading publications, informing students about the said increase in the number of counselling seats, students had expressed apprehensions that it would lessen their chances of selection. |
Mafia usurps over 5 acres in Noida
Noida, June 19 The land in Mamura village appears to have been usurped through a well-planned scheme. The land mafia gradually brought junk dealers and got their shops established by the sides of the road. Later, wood and furniture traders were settled there. Furniture dealers and realtors have now made pucca shops on this encroached land. On October 4, 2009, the Noida Authority had cleared this area of encroachment, but the encroachers did not take long to reoccupy the place and the illegal market has once again flourished there. According to Noida Authority officials, this land was included in its acquisition plans in as back as 1975. But it could not be acquired, as villagers claimed that it was an Abadi land. According to the official version, the villagers even took compensation for this land in 1989. "Nobody will be allowed to encroach upon Noida land. Orders are being issued to the anti-encroachment department to evict the land mafia from the Mamura land," said deputy CEO of Noida Aurthority, N. P. Singh. However, some old-timers hint of connivance between the land mafia and some officials. They say that had the Noida Authority removed the encroachment in an effective way in October 2009, land mafia could not have reoccupied the land. Some Noida officials apparently connived with the mafia, say villagers. |
Walia refuses more funds
to MCD
New Delhi, June 19 Walia said the government was facing paucity of funds and it could not release additional amount to the civic body for education, health and repairing of roads. According to sources, the issue was raised by the additional commissioner of the MCD at a meeting held yesterday. He had said the corporation needed more funds to upgrade schools, hospitals and roads. The Quality Council of India
(QCI) has already given negative report about Delhi hospitals. If the MCD does not improve its hospitals, the QCI will criticise the civic body also. Secondly, the MCD wants to improve its schools as the Delhi government schools are performing better than public schools. A senior official of the MCD said it had become essential for the civic body to improve the standard of its schools. However, Leader of the House in the
MCD, Subhash Arya, said that Rs 200 crore was a token money that the corporation needed. He added that the MCD had to take its share of Rs 1,100 crore from the government.
Arya said it was mandatory for the Delhi government to give 70 per cent of the non-plan budget to the MCD for education. But for the past one year, the civic body has been deprived of this.
Arya added that the government was defunct in preparation for the Commonwealth Games projects. Therefore, it has levied new taxes on commodities of daily use, increased bus fare, VAT on diesel, introduced new circle rate so as to generate thousands of
crores. |

Announce power tariff in a month, BJP tells DERC
New Delhi, June 19 Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta and Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly Vijay Kumar Malhotra in a joint conference said, “We are fighting for reducing power tariff in the interest of people. A memorandum has been submitted to the Chief Minister and the Lieutenant-Governor but surprisingly the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) is mum over the issue.” They have alleged that even though the DERC is an autonomous and legally empowered body, the Delhi government has been trying to curb its powers of fixing tariff under Section 86 and Section108 of the Delhi Electricity Act. The solicitor general of India had opined that the Delhi government’s interference was unconstitutional. They added that one month had already elapsed when the DERC had to announce its decision. The power distribution companies are earning a whopping profit of Rs 3.5 crore per day. As a result, the people of Delhi have to bear unnecessary economic burden. The leaders said the BJP would accelerate its public movement against the DERC in case power tariff was not announced within a month. They said the BJP would stage demonstrations against the DERC and the government. Gupta said he had also replied to the notice served to him by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit against BJP hoardings installed at various places in the city. He held her responsible for the power problems and the DERC’s adamant attitude for not reducing power tariff. In his reply, he stated that the Delhi government under the leadership of Dikshit had decided to issue prohibition order against the DERC on May 4, prohibiting it from undertaking its quasi legislative function and stopped it from issuing electricity tariff for 2010-11, which was scheduled to be issued last month. |
Four Kinari Bazar shops gutted; loss worth lakhs
New Delhi, June 19 According to the police, the blaze broke out in garment shops in the market around noon. Over 22 fire-engines were rushed to the spot. The firemen had to make alternative arrangements to reach the shops as congested bye-lanes obstructed the movement of fire-engines. “The place is very crowded, so it became problematic for firemen to reach there in time. Besides, the shops are located in narrow lanes. And they took an hour to reach the spot and start the extinguishing process,” a senior fire official said. The locals said the blaze had spread on the second and the third floor of the building. The firemen had to break a part of the shop’s wall to douse the flames. The market near Sunhari Masjid is one of the busiest places in the area. It is heavily crowded and has narrow lanes. Therefore, it took so long to douse the flames, said Ramkishan, an eye-witness. Residents of the area also helped the officials in controlling the situation. Another eye-witness Rajesh said, “Other than garments, there was a lot of plastic material in the shop. As a result, the whole area was covered with fumes. With those fumes and crowd, fire officials faced a tough time.” Another fire broke out at a saree shop in Katara Nawab gali around 12:15 pm. But as two fire-engines were standing a few steps away from the shop, the situation was controlled within minutes, causing no major damage to the shop. According to the police, the reason behind the fire has not been ascertained yet. “We are looking into the case. Nothing can be said as of now,” said a senior police official. He added that the financial damage caused was also to be ascertained. While in yet another incident, a tent in the Punjabi Bagh area caught fire around 4:15 pm. Four fire-engines were rushed to the spot. It took 30 minutes to control the situation, a fire official said. |
