France Best performance: Winners in 1998. Most appearances at finals:
Fabien Barthez (1998, 2002, 2006) - 17. Most goals at finals: Just
Fontaine (1958) - 13. World Cup high: Ending their wait for World Cup glory on home turf in 1998 as a 3-0 win over Brazil in the final ensured that Zinedine Zidane became a national hero to rival Michel Platini thanks to his two goals. Qualification: The circumstances of France's qualifiction for the finals are now infamous,
with Thierry Henry's handball infuriating Republic of Ireland, who subsequently demanded a replay of the play-off second leg. Prior to that controversial night, France had limped in behind Serbia in Group Seven, opening their campaign with a shocking 3-1 defeat to Austria. After beating Serbia and then drawing away in Romania, France secured two 1-0 wins over Lithuania and a narrow victory over the Faroe Islands before drawing at home to Romania and then away at Serbia. Home wins over Faroe Islands and Austria secured second spot but it was an unconvincing campaign to say the least. Top goalscorers: Thierry Henry, AP Gignac (4). Uruguay Overall record: Played 40, Won 15, Drawn 10, Lost 15. Best performance: They won the championship in their first two appearances, in 1930 and 1950. Most appearances at finals: Ladislao Mazurkiewicz (1966, 1970, 1974) - 11. Most goals at finals: Oscar Míguez, Juan Alberto Schiaffino (1950, 1954) - 7. World Cup high: The 'Maracanazo' in 1950, a 2-1 victory against Brazil in the championship-deciding game. Juan Alberto Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia scored Uruguay's goals in the second half after Friaça had put the hosts ahead. Qualification: Uruguay had to suffer to reach their 11th World Cup final. Defeat to Argentina in their final CONMEBOL qualifier took them into a play-off with fourth-placed CONCACAF side Costa Rica. Most appearances: Suárez (19). Top goalscorer: Diego Forlán Mexico Overall record: Played 45 games, Won 11, Drawn 12, Lost 22. Best performance: The quarterfinals in 1970 and 1986. Most appearances at finals: Antonio Carbajal (1950, 1954, 1958, 1962, 1966) - 10. Most goals at finals: L Hernandez (98) - 4. World Cup high: Reaching the quarter-finals in 1970 and 1986, both as the host nation. Qualification: While he was getting his team together for World Cup qualifying, Hugo Sánchez was fired after failing to qualify for the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Sven-Göran Erikson coached the team for only 13 game. Javier Aguirre then came to the rescue. Qualifying record: P18, W11, D2, L 5, F36, A18. Most appearances: Andrés Guardado, Ricardo Osorio (16). Top goalscorers: Andres Guardado, Carlos Vela, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, F Arce, J Borgetti, Pavel Pardo (3). |
London, June 1 Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry, 29, passed a fitness test after recovering sufficiently from a sprained ankle and was included in the squad but six other players were cut from Capello's original 30 players. Defenders Michael Dawson and Leighton Baines, midfielders Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson and Scott Parker and striker Darren Bent were omitted from the final squad. Eriksson drops seven
SAANENMOESER: Sven-Goran Eriksson faced the most difficult day in his short spell as Ivory Coast coach on Tuesday when he told seven players that they would not be going to the World Cup. Experienced players such as Olympique Marseille striker Bakay Kone, midfielder Gilles Yapi Yapo and French-born Emerse Fae were all dropped as Eriksson whittled his squad down from 30 to the required 23. "It's always sad when you have to tell seven players they have to go home. It's not the best part of a manager's job but it has to be done," Eriksson told reporters at the tiny Swiss village where the Elephants are training. —

Shown the Exit door Paris, June 1 The world number one crumbled in the face of a ferocious onslaught as Soderling, beaten by Federer in last year's final, claimed a first career win against the 16-times grand slam champion at the 13th attempt. Federer looked comfortable when he won the first set but the match then began to slip away from him. Returning from a rain delay at 5-5 in the third set, the Swiss immediately lost his serve and Soderling moved into a two sets to one lead. Dementieva in semis
Paris, June 1 Both players received treatment for thigh injuries midway through the opening set and Petrova, who knocked out Venus Williams in the previous round, needed more attention after Dementieva levelled the match. A confident Dementieva cruised through the deciding set as Petrova struggled to move properly, wrapping up victory with a forehand down the line after two hours and five minutes. The 28-year-old Dementieva has now reached nine semi-finals but is yet to win one of the four grand slams. She faces Italy's Francesca Schiavone in the last four. Paes-Dlouhy in semis
Defending champions Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy remained on course for a second successive French Open title by advancing to the semifinals of the men's double with a straight-set win here today. The third-seeded Indo-Czech pair defeated eighth seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski of Poland 6-1, 6-3. Paes and Dlouhy will now take on the winners of the match between Brazilian duo of Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares and 10th seeded Austrian-Israeli pair of Julian Knowle and Andy Ram. In a match lasting barely an hour, Paes and Dlouhy blew away their rivals in the opening set. The Indo-Czech pair converted all the three break points they earned to wrap up the opener in just 23 minutes. The favourites wavered a bit in the second set, conceding five double faults but with a 100 per cent break-point conversion once again, Paes and Dlouhy sealed it in 35 minutes. Meanwhile, in the mixed doubles category, Leander Paes and his partner Cara Black lost to Yaroslava Shvedova and Julian Knowle 3-6, 7-6, 7-10. —

Lalit Modi replies to his second showcause notice
Mumbai, June 1 Abdi is scheduled to go to the BCCI headquarters here today to handover the hard copy of the reply which is expected to be just over 24 pages. The showcause notice was pertaining to an e-mail sent to the BCCI by England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Chairman Giles Clarke in which he had alleged that Modi tried to damage the existing structure of international and english cricket. Modi yesterday filed defamation notice on Clarke, mentioning that the ECB boss has accused the suspended IPL Chief of seeking to float a rebel league in England, violating International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations. Modi was also served a third showcause notice yesterday by the BCCI over theatrical rights and 150-second commercial slot in between balls during the telecast of IPL-3. Modi has already replied to the first showcause notice served on him with a staggering 15,000-page response. The first showcause notice alleged that Modi had indulged in murky deals and bid-rigging in IPL. — PTI |
Lorgat: BCCI, ICC want cricket-specific code
Mumbai, June 1 He also brushed aside suggestions that WADA Director General David Howman had issued an ultimatum to the ICC and its member boards last month to fall in line with its code in its entirety by November. "I'm not sure that's what he said. In fact he was very complimentary about the progress cricket has made in terms of doping. He is very much with us in terms of putting something specific for cricket," Lorgat said. — PTI |

Bulawayo, June 1 Chasing 119 for a win from 26 overs, Dilshan took the inexperienced Zimbabwe bowlers to the cleaners with his 45-ball innings which contained seven fours and a six. He was given able support by his opening partner Upul Tharanga (37-ball 40) as Sri Lanka romped home with 10.4 overs to spare at the Queens Sports Club here. Earlier, off-spinner Suraj Randiv led a disciplined Sri Lankan bowling charge with three scalps to skittle Zimbabwe out for 118 in 24.5 overs after Dilshan won the toss and inserted the home side. The match was reduced to a 26-over affair after the start was delayed by more than four hours due to rain. Tharanga and Dilshan, who stitched an 86-run opening stand, almost clinched the issue for Sri Lanka, but the opening combo came to an end when wicketkeeper Brendan Taylor found Tharanga short of the crease in 11th over. — PTI Sri Lanka (Dilshan 60*) Zimbabwe 118 (Masakadza 62, Randiv 3-23) Lanka win by nine wickets . |
The defensive inspiration for Chelsea and England, John Terry is a vital part of the spine of the side and is viewed as one of the best defenders in the world. One of the few to have graduated from the Chelsea academy, Terry went on loan to Nottingham Forest in 2000, but returned to establish himself in the first-team alongside Marcel Desailly. In 2004 he was named Chelsea captain and led the side to back-to-back Premier League titles under Jose Mourinho, as well as two more FA Cup trophies. First called up to the England squad in 2003, he cemented his place in the first-team at Euro 2004 and rose to captain his country under Steve McClaren after the 2006 World Cup. The lowest point of his career came in February 2010 when he was stripped of the England captaincy. A series of tabloid stories exposed an alleged affair between himself and the former partner of England team-mate Wayne Bridge. Strengths: A commanding, no-nonsense style of player who does not get bullied. Weaknesses: Has been caught out in the past by strikers with pace and could use a burst of acceleration. Style: Uncompromising, tough, passionate, a natural leader. Quotes: "He [Terry] hasn't got the armband but he's still a great player and a great leader," Wayne Rooney. Trivia: Terry still has his shirt from the losing 2008 Champions League final, which he keeps in a separate cabinet in his trophy room as a constant reminder of his desire to win the competition. |
