Red tape leaves Indian swimmers high and dry

Gurdaspur, May 30
Murphy’s law which states that when things get bad they get worse is nowhere more applicable than to Indian sport. Glitches which should have not have cropped up in the all important Commonwealth games year are rearing their head when the games are just around the corner.

Officials of the Swimming Federation of India (SFI), backed by the chief coach Pardeep Kumar, had invited world renowned Australia based swimming coach Alan Thompson to train swimmers for the Commonwealth games. An household name among the world’s swimming fraternity, Thompson’s claim to fame is that he has produced many Olympic champs which also include Australian freestyle swimmer Ian Thorpe, nicknamed The Torpedo, winner of a whopping five world championship golds and an equal number of Olympic gold medals.

Thompson has also produced Grant Hackett who won the gold in the 1500m freestyle event in both the 2000 Sydney and the 2004 Athens Olympics and is regarded as the greatest distance swimmers in the world. Among his other notable protégés is Keiren Perkins who is regarded as yet another great log distance swimmer and has won Olympic medals in the 1992 Barcelona, 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The SFI had recommended the name of Thompson to SAI and Sports Ministry Officials and on the insistence of SFI officials, the coach had agreed to train the Indian teams for both the Commonwealth games and the Asian games.

The Indian swimmers, who had left the Commonwealth games camp at Pune protesting against the lack of infrastructure a few weeks ago, were an enthused lot after word spread that Alan Thompson would be taking over the reigns of the camp.

However, the SFI’s proposal to have Alan Thompson in India kept on shuttling between SAI officialdom and the Sports Ministry. This irked Alan Thomson and when finally the sports ministry sent him a letter on the basis of which he could apply for a work visa at the Indian Consulate General in Sydney, Thompson was an irritated man and dumped the proposal.

Joint Secretary (International Sports Division), Rahul Bhatnagar, however, was unfazed at the lethargic attitude of the sports ministry. His version was that Thompson got a better offer than he was getting in India and that was the reason why he decided to abstain from coming to the country to train Indian swimmers

Rohit’s ton crushes Lanka

Rohit SharmaBulawayo, May 30
Rohit Sharma hammered his second successive ODI century as India crushed Sri Lanka by seven wickets in their second match to put their campaign back on track in the cricket tri-series here today. Chasing 243, India made a rather slow start and lost both their openers inside 10 overs before one-down Virat Kohli (82) and Rohit (101 not out) resurrected the innings to help India romp home with 6.3 overs to spare at the Queens Sports Club. Earlier, the tidy Indian howlers produced a disciplined effort to bundle out Sri Lanka for 242 after captain Suresh Raina had opted to field. Today's win also marked Raina's first victory as captain.

Coming together in the 10th over, Kohli and Rohit added 154 runs from 168 balls for the third wicket to take the game away from Sri Lanka. Rohit, who hit 114 against Zimbabwe in India's first match though for a lost cause, hit six fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 100-ball, his second ODI century in his 44th match.

He got a superb support from Kohli whose 82 came from 92 balls with the help of four boundaries. After opening bowler Nuwan Kulasekara and Ajantha Mendis achieved early success by removing Murali Vijay (14) and Dinesh Karthik (18) respectively, the Sri Lankan bowlers were left high and dry with Kohli and Rohit stamping authority.

Vinay out R Vinay Kumar was today ruled out of the ongoing tri-series in Zimbabwe because of a knee injury and his Karnataka new-ball partner Abhimanyu Mithun will replace him in the Indian squad there. "Vinay has injured his knee and has been ruled out. The BCCI has chosen Mithun as replacement," BCCI said. — PTI

Casillas complains about ‘beachball’

INNSBRUCK: Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas complained the official World Cup ball was better suited to the beach than to the finals in South Africa after his side's 3-2 warm up win against Saudi Arabia. "It's a bit like a beachball," the Spanish captain was quoted as telling the Spanish media on Sunday before going on to describe the unpredictable movement of the ball.

South Africa to invoke 'Mandela touch': Pienaar

Cape Town: South African midfielder Steven Pienaar believes that the host country will invoke 'the spirit of Mandela' to create a World Cup as momentous as their heroic rugby union triumph of the 1990s. “I was at school at the time of the Rugby World Cup. We were packed into tents watching the game. There were a lot of white Afrikaners in my school, but we were allowed to watch the games together for the first time. It was difficult for the Afrikaners to cheer a black guy in public at that time. I hope the football will have the same effect. The difference for us is not so many expect the football team to do so well, but maybe the Mandela touch will bring us luck,” he added.

Prandelli to replace Lippi

ROME: Fiorentina boss Cesare Prandelli agreed a four-year deal on Sunday to become Italy coach after the World Cup, ending a saga that had threatened to cast a shadow over the team's defence of their title. Coach Marcello Lippi had never publicly said he was leaving after the June 11-July 11 tournament and conflicting signals from the World Cup winner and Italian soccer federation president Giancarlo Abete prompted an array of rumours. — Agencies

Star track

His real name is Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite. But he is known to the world by his catchy nickname: Kaká. This Brazilian star is undoubtedly one of the best footballers of the past few years and will have his chance to show it in South Africa 2010.

Even though he was born in Brasilia, he moved with his family to Sao Paulo as a kid and started playing soccer there. He made his Sao Paulo debut at the age of 19 and in a short time he showed that he was different. Skillful, relentless and possessing an excellent shot, he scored 30 goals in his first two seasons. Many big clubs in Europe set their sights on him, but it was AC Milan who claimed him after paying 8 million dollars.

He also had a great run with the Brazilian national team. He was rarely-used champion in Japan-Korea 2002 and participated in Germany 2006, where his team was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Strengths: Highly skilful player, a great shot, superb vision for a pass.

Weaknesses: Despite his height, his aerial game is not his best feature.

Style: A cerebral player who always thinks in terms of his entire team.

Quotes: "I have no doubts. To me, Kaka is the best player in the world, because he is the most complete player. I see him a notch above Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo," said Pelé.

Trivia: When he was 15, he fractured a vertebra when jumping from a springboard into a pool, and his career was in doubt. But he recovered fully. He attributed his recovery to God’s help, and from that moment became an “Athlete of Christ”.

Arthur Antunes Coimbra

Born March 3, 1953, in Rio de Janeiro and better known as Zico, he is a Brazilian coach and former footballer. Often called the "White Pelé", he is commonly considered one of the most skilled dribblers and finishers ever and possibly the world's best player of the early 80's. He was also known as one of history's greatest free kick specialists, able to bend the ball with pace and accuracy as well as having an extremely powerful shot. The gifted midfielder was named by Pelé as one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004. Also according to Pelé, generally considered the best footballer ever, "throughout the years, the one player that came closest to me was Zico".

Zico scored 52 goals in 72 international matches for Brazil, and represented them in the 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cups. They did not win any of those tournaments, even though the 1982 squad is considered one of the greatest Brazilian national squads ever. Zico is often considered one of the best players in football history not to have been on a World Cup-winning squad. He was chosen 1983 Player of the Year.
