Now, women traffic constables to don blue uniform
Jammu, June 1 To deal with the existing traffic scene, while keeping in mind the women traffic offenders and meet the shortage of staff, these policewomen in blue uniform have specially been posted in the traffic wing to assist their male counterparts in managing traffic. At a majority of busy crossings in the city, these women traffic constables were found issuing challans to the offenders in the morning, as their duty had been fixed for morning shift only. Even these traffic policewomen were seen in a joyous mood, as they liked a change in their uniform and duty too. “We have been ordered to manage traffic and we are ready for the duty, as we have got special training for it. Our uniform has also been changed. We like wearing blue uniform,” said Renu Rajput, a traffic constable. She was earlier posted in armed police. Earlier there were nearly 300 traffic cops to maintain traffic in the city, having a population of more than 8 lakh. Now, 40 women constables, after getting specialised training in traffic management held on
Gulshan Grounds here, have been deployed to deal with traffic chaos in the city. Interestingly, the move was the brainchild of IG (Traffic) Mohammad Amin Shah to introduce women constables in the traffic wing but he was transferred and posted as Managing Director, J&K Police Housing Corporation, yesterday. SP, Traffic (Jammu), Zahid Manhas said, “The move is basically to streamline the traffic scene in the city. Earlier we were facing acute staff shortage but after the deployment of women traffic constables, we will definitely be able to streamline traffic.” |
To protect sister, ultra killed Hijbul commander
Jammu, June 1 Latif, a police official said, was aghast at the repeated attempts of the senior commander in this regard . The police said there was a dispute over the extorted money also but Latif insisted the real reason was his sister. The police sources said the death of the HM commander had helped the security forces as he was trying to induct youngsters and women into militancy. Sources said in a similar incident, HM ultras Tufail, Nasir and Jaanbaz had killed a woman, Taj Begum, after she refused to marry her daughter to one of them in the Mahore area in May last year. The ultras had also killed bridegroom Aiyaz Ahmed and his father Ahmed Din. In the absence of leadership not only extorted money but young women are causing internecine fights within the remaining ultras of various militant outfits across Jammu. “Having lost their leadership and dwindling support to militancy, remaining ultras are now not only fighting over extorted money but also young women,” sources in intelligence agencies told The Tribune. Security forces eliminated over 40 terrorists within a span of first four months this year, which has left a vacuum in the top leadership, triggering a rivalry between the outfits to gain a foothold on the extortion activities and dominating the areas. |

Shake-up was overdue
Srinagar, June 1 The transfers, 56 in the police and 34 in the civil administration at the middle-rung, apart from promotions of nine IPS officers as DIGs and IGs, have come a month after the postings were effected at the lower level. This is the second major reshuffle undertaken during the past 17 months of the National Conference-Congress coalition government. A major shake-up was ordered around this time last year after the first Darbar offices moved to Jammu. The latest reshuffle, according to official sources, was overdue to fill the gaps created by the retirement of several senior officers in the police and civil administration. It had already been worked out and was approved in an hour by the Cabinet at its meeting presided over Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here yesterday. Unlike the past, the sources said the entire process was complete with total synergy between the two coalition partners. There had been reports of differences between the coalition partners, the Congress and the PDP, in the previous regime when the Cabinet decisions were either deferred or delayed. However, the National Conference is of the view that the latest changes, made in the interest of the administration, have been made with full support of the coalition partner. |
Sports dept biased against Jammu youth: Panthers Party
Jammu, June 1 In a statement issued here today, he said the department had sanctioned 500 posts of National Youth Corps for Dal Lake and advertised the same for being filled by the youth of Kashmir. He said likewise additional posts were created for Nagin Lake and shrines of Kashmir where local unemployed youth would be absorbed on a monthly honorarium of Rs 2,500 per month by the Youth Services and Sports Department. The Panthers Party leader regretted that lakes of the Jammu region, including Mansar, Dalsas and Surinsar, besides other religious places, have been totally ignored and not even a single post has been created for the same. He said it was shameful that Jammu-based lakes and shrines had been neglected by the said department despite the fact that it was headed by a Jammu-based minister. He urged the Minister for Youth Services and Sports to undo the wrongdoings, failing which the Panthers Party would launch an offensive against the government. He further lambasted the sports department for mismanagement, chaos, anarchy and corruption. He said it was scandalous that the department had withheld the funds sanctioned previous year for the construction of grounds. He said the funds which ought to be have been utilised by the department before March 31, 2009, were not even released to the executing districts, thereby providing the most glaring instance of financial mismanagement.

Marriage of Kashmiri Pandit to valley girl brings cheer
Jammu, June 1 In the marriage party were many second generation Kashmiri Pandits, who went to the valley for the first time. Muslim neighbours and friends of the family were seen in tears at the ‘vidaayi’ ceremony of the bride. About 3,000 Kashmir Pandits are based in several parts of the valley but they have been marrying mainly among themselves and the same was the pratice among the community members in Jammu division. Sanjay K. Tikku, president of the Kashmiri Pandit Sangharsh Committee, a body of Kashmiri Pandits living in the valley, said he had not heard of any such marriage post exodus of Kashmiri Pandits. “This is a rare event. I don’t remember any such marriage in the last 20 years of displacement of Kashmir Pandits from the valley. Yes, there have been instances when Kahsmir Pandits from the valley came to Jammu for the marriage of their daughters with local Kashmir youths, but no one dared to go to the valley for marriage,” asserted Kuldeep Raina, general secretary of the Panun Kashmir. Kuldeep Pandita, convener of the JK Thinkers Forum, also seconded the assertion saying this may be the first baraat to Kashmir in the last 20 years as far as he remembers. The bridegroom, Vinod Raina, a police constable who lives in the migrant camp at Nagrota, married a Kashmiri Pandit girl, Peelu Pandita, from the valley. “We went there without making much noise as we all were apprehensive of trouble. But the valley people greeted us,” he told The Tribune. In the busy local market at Seer Hamdan village, 8 km ahead of Chandirigam, it was an emotionally surcharged atmosphere when local Muslim friends of the bride’s father showered petals of rose on the marriage party. In Chandergam village local Muslims arranged dry paddy grass and placed it on the muddy lane to ensure that the shoes and clothes of the members of the marriage party did not get dirty while walking to the platform where the nuptial knot was to be tied and they were to be served with the feast. The singing of local folklore by Muslim women and girls rented the air and the marriage party was listening to it after 20 long years. Raja Appa, a neighbouring Muslim woman, said, “We are very happy to get our daughter married off but we are at pains thinking that she will live in a hostile climate like a migrant, a condition which she is not used to.” (With inputs from Ehsan Fazili in Srinagar) |
