It was a day of reaping fruits for four city lads for all the hard work that they had done for the past two years. The boys did everything from burning midnight oil to total isolation from the family and the reward for all the efforts that they had made came their way this morning.

Ramandeep, Maninder, Navdeep and Jaspreet have managed to crack the IIT-JEE-2010 seeking their claim for admission to the country’s best engineering colleges and got a rank of 170, 379, 396 and 785, respectively.

Interestingly, the top three scorers are friends and had been taking private coaching from the same centre at Kapurthala Chowk.

A student of Guru Amar Dass School, Ramandeep had barely scored qualifying marks in the 10+2 results of the CBSE this year. He had got 81 per cent marks. His mother is working as a mathematics mistress in Government Junior Model School, Ladowali Road, while his father is a Custom Officer posted in Ludhiana. The boy aims to do computer science engineering from an IIT in Delhi or Kanpur.

Call it a sheer coincidence or use of a common study material, Maninder and Navdeep, who share a close rank are in fact neighbours. Both of them reside in the Shanti Vihar colony, near Maqsudan. The elder sisters of Maninder as well as Navdeep are doing B.Tech from the NIT, Jalandhar. Now there are chances that they too get into the same college.

A student of Swami Sant Dass School, Maninder had even obtained 355 marks out of 450 qualifying marks for the BITS Pilani entrance test. Both his parents are government schoolteachers. While his father is posted in Kartarpur, his mother is a mathematics mistress at Wariana school. Unlike his pals who want to take a career with some MNCs, Maninder is aiming to make it to ISRO.
