The registry of property will be costlier in Ghaziabad from June 1 and in Greater Noida from July 1 as new circle rates in both the places will be hiked between 15 and 20 per cent respectively, it is learnt.

The additional district magistrate, Gautam Budh Nagar (Finance & Revenue), Shiva Kant Diwedi said, “It has been decided to hike the circle rates from July 1. District magistrate Deepak Agarwal will examine the report and take a decision.

According to sources, the rates in sectors of Yamuna Expressway Authority are likely be hiked. The allotment rates in sectors and circle rates are almost at the same level, said official circles.

The sectors of Greater Noida Authority adjoining Ghaziabad and Noida—sectors 1, 2, 3, 4 and 16—are likely to witness steeper hike in circle rates. The rates in villages where the land acquisition process has been completed, will be hiked by 10 per cent by the district administration, it is learnt.

Stephen’s may raise marks bar for Christians
Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 26
Delhi University’s (DU) top notch college St. Stephen’s is mulling an increase in the minimum eligibility criteria for Christian students, who get reservation in the elite institute due to its minority status, because of the widening gulf between general and quota category students.

The quota in the Christian minority institute has gone up to 50 per cent and many blame it for a change in the profile of the students in the college.

As of now, for admission to the college, the quota students are required to have 60 per cent marks in their best four subjects of senior secondary examination. However, the teachers of the college feel that a difference of 30 per cent in the marks of the students of one class does not make academic sense.

“While most students admitted under the general category have scored more than 90 per cent marks, students coming from the minority community, who comprise half the class, stand at 60 per cent marks,” said a senior faculty member, who added that the difference in academic level of students was huge.

The teachers said it was becoming increasingly difficult for them to teach in the classroom and therefore, it was important to maintain a balance among the students entering the college.

There are reports that the matter has been conveyed to the supreme council, a body responsible for taking key decisions regarding the college administration.

“The supreme council is working on it and we are waiting for the conclusion,” said Nandita Narain, spokesperson, St. Stephen’s.

The college has sub-categories within the Christian community and each sub-category has a share in the total reservation.

A total of 20 per cent seats are reserved for the churches of North India under which 10 per cent are for Delhi churches. Another 20 per cent seats have been reserved for all other churches of the country, while 10 per cent seats are for SC-ST Christians. Physically handicapped Christian candidates are also allotted seats.

The admission process for the quota students remains the same. But their admissions are done separately after calculating their merits after interviews.

Meanwhile, on the second day of the sale of forms, the college sold 1,075 forms. In the two days, 112 online forms were submitted by outstation aspiring candidates.

The college would remain close tomorrow due to government holiday, but the counters will remain open on Saturday. The forms are sold from 9.30 am to 1 pm in the morning and from 2 pm to 3.30 pm post lunch.

Power, water cuts worsen summer woes
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 26
With the mercury hovering around 45 degrees C in the national Capital, power outages and irregular water supply have made life difficult for the citizens in the city.

The erratic power supply in many parts of the Capital has punched holes in the claim of the government that Delhi has surplus power for the summer. As the peak power demand remained above 4,500 MW mark, frequent and prolonged power cuts have become a daily affair.

Discoms said that the peak demand in the Capital had risen by about 13.64 per cent since May 10. It was 4,031 MW on May 10, which reached a high of 4,581 MW on Monday. On Tuesday, the peak demand was only slightly less at 4,517 MW.

Though discoms claim that the demand is being met, several areas like Malviya Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Paharganj, Rajender Nagar, Sangam Vihar, Karol Bagh, Pitampura, Rohini and Dwarka are facing power cuts. Incidents of people protesting against power cuts have been rising for the last few weeks.

The residents of Sarojini Nagar protested in front of the local electricity office of NDMC on Monday night due to long power cuts.

Meanwhile, discoms stuck to their stand that any disruption in power supply was on account of local faults or maintenance shutdowns or upgradation work.

The situation is no better in the case of water supply.

The residents of south and south-west Delhi have been bearing the brunt of water shortage for the past few days.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has said that some areas will now get water once a day only. The areas where water supply will be restricted to once a day are Greater Kailash, Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj and East of Kailash.

“The water supply in our area was always erratic, but it is worse this week. There was no water at all on Sunday and on Monday, we got water only for 20 minutes,” said Kamal Gupta, a resident of Vasant Kunj’s Sector A, Pocket B.

Dwarka is one of the areas where water shortage has always been an issue but the situation has become grimmer since the onset of summer. “Regular water supply is non-existent since the summer started. We have been getting water once in three days,” says Rachna Sharma, a resident of Sector 20.

Another resident of Sector 13 A, Sudesh Chugh, says, “We had been getting water once a day only for so many months. Even that is stopped now. We have to purchase it from a tanker costing us Rs 400 every day.”

The residents of Kushtha Ashram, a leprosy colony in north east Delhi, had reportedly demonstrated in front of various government offices against water scarcity and its poor quality.
