"Study local, earn global" seems to be the key to attain life long success for the city's would-be techies. Well, that is the sentiment expressed by a majority of those who cleared this year’s IIT joint entrance examination, the results of which were declared today.

Eldest sister of Harcharan Bains, media adviser to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, died after a brief illness here today. Manjit Kaur Sandhu (67) is survived by her husband former PCS officer Daljit Singh Sandhu and two sons.

7-day NSS camp at Doraha College

The seven-day NSS camp for girls at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, started here today.A total of 75 volunteers are participating in the camp. Principal Dr Narinder Singh Sidhu inaugurated the camp and said: “Volunteers must realise their duties, as they can make a nation great and strong. ‘Godman’ mercilessly thrash newly wed
Jagraon, May 26
A newly married woman from Raikot, who was suffering from severe headache, was bought to an “ichhadhari” baba of Braich village near Jagraon and mercilessly beaten up with iron tongs (chimta) in the name of treatment. Her condition became so serious that she had to be admitted to a hospital in Mullanpur Dakha. A large number of devotees witnessed the incident but none came forward to her rescue.

Minor fire at Feroz Gandhi market
Ludhiana, May 26
The basement at Feroz Gandhi market that caught fire due to a short-circuit in Ludhiana on Wednesday. A fire broke out in the basement of Swani Motors at Feroz Gandhi market due to the short circuit here today. No loss of life or property has been reported. Had the fire department not taken timely action, there could have been much more loss. According to fire department officials, three fire tenders were pressed into the service to douse the flame.

23-yr-old operated upon
Ludhiana, May 26
Dr Anooj Chatley, neurosurgeon at Ludhiana MediCiti Hospital, recently operated upon a complex case of aneurysm of brain through micro-neurosurgical techniques.A 23-year-old man from Bathinda was referred to Ludhiana MediCiti in an unconscious state. Dr Chatley examined and found that he had developed bleeding in brain (sub-arachnoid haemorrhage) due to which he became unconscious and developed seizures. CT angiography was done, which revealed a large aneurysm in a major artery supplying blood to the brain. Aneurysm was stuck to brain tissue and had two-three small branches of the vessel adherent to it.

Rly employees threaten indefinite strike
Ludhiana, May 26
Daljit Singh, divisional secretary, Northern Railwaymens’ Union, addresses a rally in Ludhiana on Wednesday. Serving an ultimatum to the Union government and the Railway ministry to desist from its proposed privatization, the Northern Railwaymens’ Union today threatened to go on an indefinite strike and bring the train movement to a complete halt without any further notice.

30 bus passengers escape unhurt
Ludhiana, May 26
At least 30 passengers had a miraculous escape after an over-speeding bus lost control and rammed into a divider near ESI Hospital here this morning.The incident took place at around 9.30am here when a private bus belonging to New Akal bus service (PB - 10- BZ- 9377) was heading towards Raikot lost control and ran over a divider. It uprooted a tree and three electrical poles.

NGO honours topper

An NGO honoured a school topper who got 86.6 per cent marks. Amrita Kaliraw of AS Model School got first position in class XII examination, the results of which were declared recently. Jasvir Kaur, director of NGO, Raman’s Woman World honoured the topper at a function here on Tuesday.

The Sudhar police yesterday booked three persons for harassing a girl for more dowry.The booked persons include husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law of the girl.

11 booked for murderous attack on advocate
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 26
A gang of miscreants, armed with sharp-edged weapons, allegedly tried to kill four persons after dragging them from a bus at the Pohir bus stop near here last evening.The victims included a local advocate and witnesses in connection with another attempt to murder case, registered against the suspects at the local police station. The Dehlon police has booked at least 11 persons under Sections 307, 324, 323, 324, 148 and 149 of the IPC.

Domestic help nabbed for serving drug-laced food

The Dehlon police has arrested a Nepalese domestic help, who had tried to rob an organiser of a public school at Dehlon, by serving the drug-laced food to the family a week ago.

Court of the Additional Sessions Judge Arunvir Vashisht adjourned the attempt to murder and land grabbing case involving BIS Chahal, media adviser of the Punjab Chief Minister, till August 17 for awaiting High Court’s order.


Cricket: Ludhiana pip Kapurthala to enter semis
Ludhiana, May 26
A match in progress between Ludhiana and Kapurthla at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana on Wednesday. In reply to Ludhiana's total of 399 runs, Kapurthala were bundled out for a paltry score of 106 runs and lost on the basis of first innings lead of 293 runs in the third match of the Punjab State Inter-District U-22 Cricket Tournament being organised by the Punjab Cricket Association which concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University here today.
