A Honda City car being driven by an army officer's wife, allegedly in an inebriated condition, met with an accident, killing two people in the Delhi Cantonment area of South-West Delhi last night.

According to the police, the accident took place in the Gopinath Bazaar area around 11.40 pm.

According to information, Nivedita Singh (34), wife of a serving Lieutenant-Colonel Rahul Singh rammed her car into an autorickshaw, killing its driver and a passenger. According to police sources, Nivedita Singh was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when the accident took place and was on her way home from a shopping mall.

"According to eyewitnesses, Nivedita was speeding the car way above the permissible limits and lost control of the vehicle before ramming into the autorickshaw head on which had four occupants, including the driver. DTC ‘star’ drivers to motivate staff
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 23
To encourage and motivate its crew, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has selected some drivers and conductors as “star drivers, conductors and supervisory staff”.

The drivers are Dinesh Kumar, S. Kumar, Radhey Syam and conductors are Siri Ram, Vijender Singh and Sushil Kumar.

Kanwar Lal, ticket inspector (TI), has been selected as star traffic supervisory staff for three months. A sum of Rs 5,000 per month will be given those choosen as star workers.

The selection criterion was based on the overall performance of the employees such as punctuality, operational performance, discipline and attitude towards the passengers etc, media consultant of the DTC, M. S. Sehrawat said.

This has been done for the first time. There is a rumour that drivers do not complete the trips. They do not even pick the passengers from the bus stops . The conductors do not show full recovery of the sale of tickets. This ‘star’ system will make them follow all the directions given by the seniors.

Besides, in a bid to enhance revenue of the DTC, the transport department has empowered depot managers for two months to appoint bus conductors and drivers on contractual and daily-wage basis. They can also change the route of any particular bus according to the financial viability.

The decision was taken at a meeting held under the chairmanship of Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Friday.

Expressing concern over the financial conditions of the DTC, the minister said that the depot managers should take responsibility to enhance operational revenue. Two months have been given to them to develop some mechanism and improve their functioning.

He exhorted the staff members of Delhi Transport Corporation to discharge their duties with a sense of responsibility and commitment.

The depot managers have to ensure that a bus should cover its prescribed mileage of 200-250 km per day in accordance with the trip schedule, the minister said.

Sheila gives media the go-by

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been visibly brusque to media persons asking her probing questions. This has been more evident in her third term and, it seems, she believes that she is better off without the prying eyes of the media after scoring a hat-trick of remarkable wins.

After it emerged that she had been sitting over Afzal Guru’s mercy petition file for over four years ignoring frequent reminders from the home ministry, she has banned the entry of media to most parts of the Delhi secretariat.

The order put out on May 19 bars journalists from moving second floor upwards. Her office is at the third floor. Afzal Guru’s file has reached the MHA, but the ban on media continues. However, resourceful reporters will manage to do their job, irrespective of politicians’ whims and fancies. Dikshit is fast losing her appeal among the custodians of the fourth estate.

Midsummer day aspirations

As Delhi University (DU) braces itself for a massive admission exercise, one of the basic services related to the admission procedure falls terribly short of expectations. Every year, hundreds of students queue up during the peak of summer at the only bank counter near Dean of Students Welfare office to get their demand drafts made.

Another counter available on campus is near the Hindu College which is also crowded. Adding to the misery of students, most colleges have this year registered for Common Aptitude Test for English (CATE).

Students have to attach a demand draft with each CATE form. It means this summer is going to be rather hot for DU aspirants.

‘W’ for women; some boys in dark

Even after clearing their senior secondary examinations with high percentage, hundreds of students who apply to Delhi University (DU) colleges do not understand what “(W)” written next to the name of a college means.

It stands for “Woman” if you are also confused. Every year the cut-offs for woman-only colleges are getting affected due to boys who end up applying there.

Many popular DU colleges like Miranda House, LSR and Jesus and Mary are girls’ colleges, but apparently not every boy seems to be aware of it.

“These boys apply to courses and colleges indiscriminately without even reading the common pre-admission form. This affects the cut-offs in colleges,” said an administrative official. It is only at a later stage the correction is made.

Bollywood and colonial era on wheels

If things go as planned, the national Capital will have designer rickshaws plying on roads during the Commonwealth Games. While some will have antique gramophones, others will be theme-based, drawing inspiration from Bollywood or the colonial times.

The Fashion Designer Council of India has collaborated with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) for the project. These fancy rickshaws were unveiled at NIFT’s annual event Fashionova 2010 a few days back.

To begin with, 50 rickshaws would be launched for players to move within the sprawling 63.5 hectare Games village, which has 34 towers with 1,168 flats. The numbers could increase if need arises.

However, officials said the proposal is still being considered, but has found many backers due to its novelty.

Vengeful hubby

A man engaged in a bitter divorce battle with his wife used the RTI to make life more difficult for her. He took one and all by surprise in a Tis Hazari court, where their divorce petition was being heard, by producing records of her wife’s presence in a government school where she worked as a teacher.

The record, obtained by a RTI application, showed that she was present in the school on the days even when she attended the hearings in the court. Though the court had hardly anything to do with her otherwise-incredible double act, but it did embarrass her.

Syllabus meet minutes distorted: Maths dept
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 23
The teachers of the mathematics department of Delhi University (DU) today alleged that the university administration had falsified the records of the proceedings of the course committee meeting held on May 10.

At the meeting, the mathematics teachers had declined to approve the mathematics syllabi of science courses, for which the semester system is being implemented from this year.

However, now a meeting of the course committee has been called on Monday to discuss the same agenda once again. “It is shocking that the head of the department under pressure from the vice-chancellor has called another meeting of the committees of courses on Monday to discuss the same agenda, and that too in the vice-chancellor’s office instead of the department,” said Nandita Narayan, spokesperson, DU Mathematics Teachers’ Association (DUMTA).

Narayan alleged that the draft minutes of the meeting held on the May 10 were false and fabricated.

The DUMTA maintained that after a marathon discussion spread over several hours, the house had resolved to reject all the proposed syllabi.

“Resolutions to this effect were duly proposed, seconded and put to vote. Not even a single person present at the meeting had voted against the resolutions,” said N.K.Jain, president of DUMTA, who has also written a letter to the vice-chancellor objecting to the “irregular” meeting of the course committee.

In his letter, he has pointed out that the draft minutes of the previous meetings are false.

The DUMTA has demanded that the minutes should be rectified and placed before the next meeting of the committee of courses, which should be duly called at the department of mathematics with adequate notice to all members along with agenda papers.

“The vice-chancellor should desist from continuously violating all legal and academic norms and bullying departments into compliance with his half-baked, academically disastrous schemes,” the teachers said in a press statement.

Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, May 23
Thanks to a Central Government’s special employment-generation project based on the public-private partnership (PPP) model, several local youths belonging to below-poverty line (BPL) are being employed in the private sector.

The Union Ministry of Rural Development’s special project for placement-linked skill-development under the Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) is designed to equip the unemployed rural youth from BPL families with marketable skills for getting them employment.

The underlying idea behind the time-bound training and capacity-building programme is to bring a specific number of BPL families above the poverty line through job-placement.

The Union Ministry of Rural Development has partnered with NIS-Sparta and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to implement the SGSY special project under the PPP model. IGNOU has been entrusted with the job of monitoring the project and certify the trainees.

“The exercise, which is in its first phase as of now, will gradually cover 15 states within the next few months. The candidates will be placed in the frontline sales and customer service. The second phase of the project will target benefiting 1 lakh youth per year, covering all states,” maintains Goutam Roy, executive senior vice-president, Leading Solutions NIS Sparta, who is leading the project.

The candidates are being placed in frontline sales and customer service departments in diverse sectors spanning from FMCG, telecommunications, BPO and retail, among others. Nearly 300 youths, including 40 from Gurgaon, have so far been placed through this programme, he asserts, adding that the youths are fetching a maximum salary of Rs 10,414 per month and an average of Rs 5,500 per month in companies like KFC, Pepsi, Pizza Hut, NIIT, Godrej, TATA and Reliance in their frontline sales or services.

“I recently underwent a training session under the project and am employed with in the customer-care division of Godrej,” says Arvind, a 23-year-old youth of Navada Fatehpur village in the district. He heard about the scheme at his village and got registered for it at the BDO’s office.

Ritesh, a base trainer with NIS-Sparta, says they have been meeting village sarpanches, block development officers and other grassroots-level functionaries to help them spread awareness about the project so that more and more youths get benefited.

Heat, humidity leave Delhiites restless
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 23
It was a tough day for Delhiites today as the sweltering heat was accompanied by high humidity at 47.30 per cent.

The day temperature settled at 43.6 degree Celsius, which was three notches above the average, an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The minimum temperature today was recorded four notches above average at 30.7 degrees Celsius.

Forecasting similar weather conditions for tomorrow, the weatherman has predicted the maximum temperature to hover around 43 degrees Celsius.

“The minimum temperature is expected to settle at a little less at 27 degrees Celsius. The sky will remain mainly clear,” the IMD official said.

The unbearably hot and humid day today had the city residents hoping for some respite with thunderstorms or light showers. The Met department had predicted rains in some parts of the city towards the evening. However, as the day progressed, the change in weather conditions led to any possibility of rains vanishing within hours.

“It is unbelievably humid for this time of the year. As if the heat wasn’t enough, now the humidity has become a pain. No amount of personal care is enough for such weather. The power cuts and pollution on roads are making things even tougher,” said Mahi, an interior decorator in south Delhi.

Fired over extra maternity leave, woman moves court

New Delhi, May 23
When she gave birth in December 2008, little did Navneet Kumari know that she would lose her job. Fired for applying for a third month of maternity leave, she has gone to court against the NGO which, ironically, works for child welfare and which she served for over 20 years.

“I had been working with the Delhi Council for Child Welfare (DCCW), an NGO, since 1987. I was on maternity leave from December 30, 2008, to February 28, 2009,” Navneet told IANS. She gave birth to a boy on December 31, 2008, at St. Stephen’s Hospital.

“When I applied for extending my leave for one more month, my services as an office assistant were terminated,” she said.

On April 13, 2009, she claims to have received a letter from the NGO, undersigned by its president Neena Macedo, saying: “Your absence from work has been detrimental for the smooth running of the Council’s work...I regret to inform you that we cannot give three months maternity leave to any person...I have no option but to relieve you of your duties with immediate effect.”

“I was shocked,” Navneet said. But she requested the organisation’s president not to terminate her services, saying she was willing to join duty immediately.

Her lawyer, Pardeep Gupta, said they approached the Tis Hazari court last year.

The court sent a notice to the DCCW seeking its position on the matter. The next hearing is on July 7.

“We will plead that the act of the NGO is a heinous crime and the guilty should be punished,” Gupta said.

He said as per the rules and regulations of the council, two months of maternity leave was permissible with full pay. Further six weeks of leave is allowed without pay for an employee who had rendered three years of service.

“But my client has served the organisation for around 22 years,” Gupta said.

He said the organisation’s action was in complete violation of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. — IANS
