Gupta is Delhi BJP chief
New Delhi, May 15 "BJP president Nitin Gadkari has nominated Vijender Gupta as the Delhi state president of the party," a BJP statement said. Forty-five-year-old Gupta's name was decided after a series of meetings among the party leaders, including L K Advani, Nitin Gadkari, Arun Jaitley, Ananth Kumar, Ram Lal and Thavarchand Gehlot. A three-time councillor from Rohini, Gupta had unsuccessfully contested against human resource development minister Kapil Sibal from Chandni Chowk constituency in 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Former union minister Vijay Goel was also in the race to head the party's Delhi unit. Sources said the BJP leaders also discussed work allocation for the party's newly appointed general secretaries, secretaries and other office-bearers. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhra Raje also attended the meeting at Nitin Gadkari's residence. |
Docs want reforms in MCI Act
New Delhi, May 15 A majority of doctors of IMC, Delhi Medical Association and autonomous All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) feel that the MCI has become a non-representative body with a gross disparity in the representation of members from various states. What's more, there are sections of the medical fraternity like the Army, Indian Council of Medical Research that are underrepresented. "There has to be a uniformity in representation states. Maharashtra, with nearly 150 colleges, has only one nominee. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Naidu also have a dismal representation of one member. However, Gujarat which has nine medical colleges has 5-6 representations," pointed out Dr Prem Kumar, former additional secretary of MCI. The new system, they believe, would put an end to the overarching, extra-constitutional authority resting in the national policing body, courtesy which doctors enjoyed prolonged tenures, with members serving even their fourth or fifth terms. Former chief Dr Ketan Desai, arrested on graft charges, had been a member for almost 20 years. "The term of members should be fixed for not more than two times and each term should be of four years. A provision of removal of the president as in the case of other important posts has to be brought in," said Dr Kumar. President of Faculty Association of AIIMS, Dr Manoj Singh said, "In order to ensure greater transparency, a system has to be evolved and various details like recognition of colleges and deficiencies identified should be displayed on the national website. Also the body has to be free from the government's control. It should enjoy its autonomous nature and the process has to be phased out to make it an elected body." Currently, the MCI has 120 members, including eight nominated by the government and the rest elected and nominated from states and UTs. Dr Kumar also suggested that members of Parliament with an MBBS degree should be considered for the ex officio posts. |
Qutub Minar Metro station to
add lustre to monument
New Delhi, May 15 As this station is going to be connected from the Central Secretariat Metro station on the one side and HUDA City Centre on the other, it is expected that more than three lakh passengers will use the train daily by 2011. According to the ministry of culture, Qutub Minar is India’s second most preferred tourist destination after the Taj Mahal with revenue earnings of Rs 10.42 crore as compared to about Rs 15 crore earnings from the Taj Mahal in 2009. “The Qutub Minar Metro station has been modelled keeping the heritage monuments around in mind and its presence will add lustre to the world heritage monument,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Dholpur stone-cladding has been done on the exterior of the station. Handmade tiles are being used while clay and other earthy colours and tones have been given to the building to match it up with the local landscaping of the area. The platform will be on the first floor and the concourse is being constructed on the ground floor. Part of the station structure rests on a rock while the other part will be elevated at a height of three meters above the road level. The frontage of the station has been camouflaged with the natural rock structure on which a part of the station rests. The Qutub Minar Metro station has also earmarked 2,200 square meters of parking space. The construction work at this station is almost complete. Once the entire 27-km-long Central Secretariat to Gurgaon corridor is opened, it will form about 45-km-long Metro corridor connecting Jahangirpuri, South Delhi and HUDA City Centre within 90 minutes from the one end to the other. Before the Commonwealth Games 2010, the DMRC is planning to run a fleet of about 60 trains on this line with a frequency as high as 3 |
DU admin keeps off history conference
New Delhi, May 15 History's premier conference was expected to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who also gave the event a miss. There are speculations on campus that the administration was apprehensive of an ugly turn of events as the teachers have been crying foul against the passing of science syllabi in Academic Council (AC) meeting. "None of the top administrative officials attended such a big event that was taking place right next to the vice-chancellor's office. They were expecting that the teachers might create a scene at the event," said a senior official of the university. Vice-chancellor Deepak Pental is the chairman of the organising committee of the conference and there are reports that Pental has not been attending office since the AC meeting. The university pro-vice-chancellor Sampat Kumar and history department dean historian Nayanjot Lehri did not attend the ceremony either. After Pental walked out of the AC meeting on Friday, 16 AC members have been inside the council hall where the meeting concluded as a mark of protest against the "violation of guidelines" in the passing of semester system in 12 science courses. "We have been sitting inside the council hall for two days now and the administrative representatives have not even come to meet us; attending the inauguration ceremony today would have been uncomfortable," said Vijaya Venkataraman, AC member. The council room where the AC members have been camping shares a wall with the conference room where the national conference is being held. However, the teachers organised a silent protest against the implementation of semester system. "We staged a silent protest against the vice-chancellor at the venue of inaugural session of history congress," said Aditya Narayan Mishra, president, DU Teachers' Association (DUTA). The protesting teachers wore black badges. While the DUTA wished success to the congress, it maintained that the vice-chancellor lost the moral ground on semester and Cobalt 60 episode and absented himself from the event. |
DU teachers to submit internal assessment results
New Delhi, May 15 The teachers hinted that the results would be out in time, as they were planning to submit the internal assessment marks to the DU administration soon. "Withholding the internal assessment result was a way to protest against the university administration's high-headedness. We have nothing against students and the results should be out in time," said a senior leader of the teachers' union while talking to The Tribune. The teacher indicated that a meeting would be called soon and the teachers would be asked to submit the grades of the internal assessment exams, which have already been prepared, to the administration. "The grades are ready. They only need to be fed into the university computer, and the procedure would not take long," he said. Thousands of students enrolled in DU were expecting that their results this year will be delayed, as the teachers had decided to withhold them at the college- level itself. The teachers were protesting against the university's decision to implement semester system at the undergraduate level. The results of the academic year 2009-10 are scheduled to come out in July. |

We are expecting that it will not cross 45° C next week," the official added. |

Chargesheet against two in Delhi blasts case
New Delhi, May 15 The chargesheet against Salman Ahmad and Mohammed Shahzad was submitted in a sealed cover to chief metropolitan magistrate Kaveri Baweja. The court will take it up on May 20. On May 5, Baweja gave the Delhi police 10 days’ time to file a chargesheet against Shahzad and Salman, arrested in February and March this year, respectively. Out of the 14 arrested, Shahzad, Salman and Hakim are in Tihar Jail in New Delhi. Nine other accused arrested in this case are at present in a Gujarat jail for investigations into their alleged roles in serial blasts in Ahmedabad. A series of bomb blasts rocked the Capital on September 13, 2008, killing 26 people and leaving 135 others injured. |
Warrant issued against Salem
New Delhi, May 15 “Issue fresh production warrant against Abu Salem for May 29, the next date of hearing,” said additional chief metropolitan magistrate Kiran
Bansal. The court, which was to record the testimonies of prosecution witnesses, had to adjourn the hearing due to non-appearance of Salem. Besides Salem, Romesh Sharma, the alleged frontman of underworld don Dawood
Ibrahim, is a co-accused in the case. He was lodged at the Hauz Khas police station here in 1998. As per the FIR, Salem allegedly made threat calls to businessmen Vinay Kumar Singh and Malkiyat Singh, while Sharma used to provide information to Salem on phone regarding the potential targets. Sharma’s trial, which is at the fag end, is separated from that of Salem as he absconded after the offence and the proceedings against the latter could start only in 2005 following his extradition from Portugal. |

The businessman was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared brought dead, he added. Three arrested for posing as crime branch sleuths
New Delhi, May 15 Police apprehended the accused Pardeep, Joginder and Santosh who had come to Aurobindo Road near TB Hospital on May 12 in search of potential victims. One Uday to whom the stolen laptop had been sold was also arrested the next day. Accused Twinkle and Sachin are still absconding. All the arrested are residents of Trilokpuri. According to HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south), the arrest came following investigation into the complaint filed by one Ravi Ranjan, who was robbed of his ATM card, money and pan card on March 27 when he along with his friend took lift from the accused while on their way to New Delhi Railway Station. “After travelling for about a kilometer, the accused who claimed to be sleuths from the crime branch, said that somebody had committed a robbery of Rs 3.5 lakh. They took the ATM cards of Rajiv and his friend Kunal, pan cards and money on the pretext of checking. They also took pin numbers of the ATM cards and dropped the complainant and his friend near Akshardham Temple. While going away, they also took Leveno laptop, Sony Ericson and Classic mobiles and some documents from them,” said Dhaliwal. The interrogation revealed that Pradeep was the leader who constituted a gang consisting of his friends Twinkle, Santosh, Sachin and Joginder. The gang members used to operate in a group of 4-5 persons. They used to target passengers on the bus stands. “On the pretext of asking way for a particular destination, they gave lift to their potential victims. Rs 1.89-crore land compensation
Greater Noida, May 15 Sone Dai, the real claimant from Tiloni Mirzapur village in Rabupura, has filed a case in Kasna police station. Earlier, the land compensation of her husband’s younger brother had been usurped by false claimants. Sone Dai’s husband Mohinder had died many years ago leaving 2.1220 hectare land in the name of his wife. The land was later acquired by Greater Noida Development Authority. The woman contacted revenue official Kanwarpal Singh Yadav a fortnight ago. He told her that she could take her compensation amount from the office of Additional DM (LA). When Sone Dai visited ADM’s office along with her two daughters and a son-in-law, she was told that the compensation amount of Rs 1.89 crore had been paid on March 5, 2010. She was stunned to hear it. She was told that the amount had been deposited in Maha Metha bank where a new account had been opened for the purpose. A sum of Rs 1.34 crore had been withdrawn while one Ajit had opened a fixed deposit account for Rs 55 lakh. Meanwhile, the 90-year-old Sone Dai complained to DM Deepak Agarwal who has entrusted the probe to SDM Sadar, Vishal Singh. |
Gt Noida traffic police does a Munnabhai
Greater Noida, May 15 All those who drive on the wrong side, don’t use helmets or commit any other traffic offence here are stopped and presented with a bouquet of flowers by small children and politely asked to follow traffic rules for their own as well as the safety of other road users. “Please do not do it. Someone is waiting for you at home,” is the mild but effective plea of the children to the traffic rules violators. The drive, which started on Thursday, would continue till Monday. The children belong to classes IV and V of Arya Deep Public School here. Near Jagat Farm traffic roundabout here, every traffic rule violator is being presented with flowers by these small children. The violators first react in a stunned manner, but later sheepishly realise their mistake. Almost every offender promises the children that he or she would abide by traffic rules in future. According to Surinder Kumar Verma, SP, Greater Noida, “The idea is proving a great success. Even the habitual traffic offenders have promised to mend their ways,” he added. The children, Verma said, also enjoyed their new-found role of little cops. Traffic offences like driving on the wrong side, riding two-wheelers without helmets, triple riding on two-wheelers, driving cars without fastening the seat belts and overspeeding are very common in this township, which has broad and well-planned roads. |
