The common pre-admission form can be deposited at one of the admission information centres irrespective of the college a candidate is applying for.

New Delhi, May 11
The admission to the almost 54,000 undergraduate seats in the prestigious Delhi University would begin from May 28 and the forms would be available at 16 admission centres across the Capital.

The number of seats has increased this year from last year’s 49,000 as DU gets ready to fully implement 27 per cent OBC reservation this time round after increasing its total seats in a phased manner since 2008.

“The admission would commence just a few days after the CBSE results are out and forms for regular undergraduate courses would be sold and received from May 28 to June 11 between 10 am and 1 pm,” DU’s vice-chancellor Deepak Pental announced today at a media conference.

The first admission list by colleges would be out on June 22 and successful students could take admission from June 23 to June 25. The second admission list would be out on June 26 followed by the third cut-off list on July 1. The colleges left with vacant seats would come out with a forth list on July 6.

The admission of students in the second list would be done between June 28 and June 30 while it would be between July 2 and July 5 for students named in the third list and July 7 and July 9 for those in the fourth list.

The admission lists for evening colleges would follow the same dates with the only change being that they would be announced at 4 pm.

The last date of admissions this year is August 6 while admission to those seats converted from vacant OBC seats by the colleges after August 6 would end on August 16. The last date of admission with “condonation of delay” by the vice-chancellor is August 31.

The admission schedule begins and ends earlier this year compared to last year when it had started on June 16.

Apart from the common admission application form, students could fill in the separate individual forms for the colleges which have some specific conditions.

The university administration has also decided to make the SC-ST admissions transparent this year by putting the total number of seats available per college on a LCD display right outside their admission centres in Arts Faculty Building, DU North Campus and the room number of 116 Arts Faculty South Campus of DU.

The admissions to English (hons.) courses in some colleges would be taken through Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE). The colleges which are covered under CATE this year are Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, Hindu College, Indraprastha College, Kamla Nehru, Maharaja Agrasen, Ram Lal Anand College (evening), Satyawati College (evening), Shivaji College, Shyam Lal College, Swami Shradhanand College, Zakir Husain College, Zakir Husain College (evening), Lady Shri Ram College, Miranda House, Bharti College, Shadeed Bhagat Singh and Deshbandhu College.

In a fix over semester system

The DU administration is in a fix over the implementation of the semester system in undergraduate courses.

Pental said a decision could only be taken after the Academic Council meeting. DU is a large university and implementing the system may take time.

“Our university depends on inter-disciplinary teaching and it becomes difficult if one whole department refuses to adopt a particular system, but the semester system should be implemented to make DU a global educational institute,” he said.

DU to hold centralised trials for sports quota applicants
Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 11
The sports quota seats have long been used by the administration to allegedly grant favours to a chosen few. But Delhi University has now decided to have a centralised system to select eligible sportspersons for the quota seats.

Official sources told The Tribune that they had been receiving complaints against various colleges that the managements gave admissions in an opaque manner, leaving many applicants and their families wondering if there was something fishy.

The DU administration has decided to formulate a central team of coaches and experts in different games who would hold trials at the university level, reducing the individual colleges’ discretion in the matter to the minimum.

“The admission procedure remains the same, but candidates applying under the sports quota would appear for trials at the university level where they would be graded,” said Novy Kapadia, deputy proctor, DU.

Students applying under the category would be graded on 25 points, subject to their performance in a particular game and their performance certificates would also be accounted for.

The university would most likely hold centralised trials from June 14 to 19 at various colleges on the South Campus except for sportspersons from squash, tennis and basketball; trials for them would be held at the North Campus colleges.

“The minimum required score to apply for any college is 40 per cent out of total 25 points,” said Kapadia.

The sports quota candidates would now have to apply in individual colleges and then take part in centralised trials to get their grades. With the centralised grades, the candidates could go back to the college of their choice and take admission if the college offers the seats at that grade.

Colleges would have a right to choose amongst the candidates on offer. For example, if a college wants to take a football goal-keeper who has lesser grade than a striker, the college could exercise its choice and admit a goal-keeper.

The DU colleges give 60 per cent weightage to the trails and sports certificates for sports quota admissions and academic record makes up for the rest 40 per cent.

Schoolgirls attacked with razor
* The two girls had to take stitches on upper arms
* Robbed of gold chains, earrings in Chanakyapuri
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, May 11
Two girl students belonging to prestigious Carmel Convent School situated in the Chanakyapuri area of New Delhi district were attacked and severely injured this afternoon with razor by a man who robbed them of their money and jewellery.

According to police, the incident took place around 11.30 am outside a photostat shop located in a market behind the school premises. The razor attack was so severe that the injured girls Ritika (17) and Tanvi (16), both students of class XII, had to get 42 and 35 stitches respectively on their upper arms. The robber, a young man in his early twenties, was on a motorcycle and, according to girls, was following them for quite some time in the market.

As per Chanakyapuri police station sleuths, the two girls who were appearing for their semester exam had come to the market around 11 am to get some study material photocopied. “The girls had a cold drink and after getting the papers photocopied, they were walking towards the school. In the meantime, this man intercepted them and demanded the gold chains and earrings the girls were wearing. Even as Tanvi was taking off her earrings, the man attacked her with a sharp blade attached with a handle and snatched Rs 500 and mobile from Ritika’s hand before hitting her with the razor,” said a police official close to investigation.

According to him, the girls could not note down his motorcycle number as they were in a state of shock to even shout for help. A flower vendor saw the girls bleeding and after tying clothes on their arms, he took them to school in an autorickshaw. The girls were later taken to RML Hospital.

Carmel Convent School is an elite all-girl school and has children of many rich businessmen studying in the school.

According to information, while Ritika is resident of East of Kailash, Tanvi comes from Gurgaon and her father Rajan Manchanda is an exporter.

Speaking to media, Rajan refrained from putting school at fault for the incident. “They had to get some study material photocopied and took permission from the teachers to go outside. They are senior students and are responsible enough,” said Rajan.

He said that Tanvi can identify the person if brought before her.

Meanwhile, police has lodged a case and is investigating the matter.

According to a senior police official, Tanvi and Ritika were taken to the incident spot after the first-aid.

“The matter is being investigated. We took the girls to the spot and are working on some clues,” said the police official.

Among the hospital staff, nurses are most prone to infections transmitted via blood during needle stick injuries, which are very common during various procedures like suturing, applying injections, handling instruments, etc.

Taking a note of this, doctors and nursing organisations like the Malayalee Nurses’ Welfare Association have urged the government and the private health care facilities to prioritise the safety aspect of nurses that has very often exposed them to blood-borne pathogens such as Hepatitis B and C virus and HIV virus.

However, no specific data on the matter has been there as most of the cases go unreported even though globally it is estimated that the nurses account for 44 per cent of health care workers who are a victim of needle stick injuries.

“Due to accidental blood exposure, nursing staff remain at constant risk of at least 20 diseases. Besides the nursing staff, the other people who are at high-risk include laboratory staff, physicians, hospital housekeepers and other health care workers,” Dr Aggarwal said.

He added that the majority of the needle stick injuries occur in the operating room (23 per cent) followed by the patient room (18 per cent), emergency room (15 per cent), and procedure room (11 per cent).
