Lose to Sri Lanka by 5 wickets, bow out of World Cup St Lucia, May 11 Needing a comprehensive win to keep their chances alive of making it to the last four, India squandered initial advantage to eventually go down to Sri lanka in their crucial Super Eights match of the Twenty20 cricket World Cup at Beausejour stadium here today. Needing 164 to win, Sri Lanka won with 5 wickets to spare. With three runs required from the last ball, Kapugedera hit Nehra off the ground for a huge six to take them closer to the semifinal berth.

India leave nothing to chance St Lucia, May 11 Earlier in the day, Suresh Raina top scored with a 47-ball 63 as India scored a competitive 163 for five against Sri Lanka in their crucial Super Eights match of the Twenty20 cricket World Cup at Beausejour stadium here today. India were 90 for one at half-way mark but could not accelerate much afterwards due to slow nature of the wicket. If India manages to beat Sri Lanka by 20 runs, they will keenly watch the next match where an Australia win over the West Indies would clear their passage to the semifinals. Given the do-or-die situation, India batted aggressively and positively. Dinesh Karthik, who replaced Murali Vijay, started off with a bang by dispatching the first ball of innings off Angelo Mathews to the point boundary. Karthik (13) looked in good touch as he was striking the ball well but a leading edge off Lasith Malinga ended his stay at the crease, though India made a steady start. In comes Raina and boundaries started to flow. The diminutive southpaw, who had hit his maiden T20 century at this very ground on May 2, creamed Thilan Thushara for three boundaries in the sixth over as India raced to the 52. Gambhir, dropped on five by Kumar Sangakkara, was happy playing the second fiddle and the two left-handers took India to 90 for one in 10 overs. The duo did not take much risk and relied on ones and twos and hit occasional boundary to keep the scoreboard going. India had galloped to 96 for one in 11 overs when Gambhir (41) was snared behind the wicket by Kumara Sangakkarra off Malinga and the 66-run partnership ended. Gambhir’s fall was to bring Dhoni into the simmering cauldron. The Indian captain did not disappoint, making an aggressive 19-ball 23 not out. Raina, named captain for the tri-series in Zimbabwe, seemed to carry the confidence of his century-knock here against South Africa into this game. He tucked, back cut and swung with gay abandon, bringing up his 50 in just 33 balls, interspersed with five boundaries and a six off Suraj Randiv. It was in the look out for runs that Raina fell, holing out to Mahela Jayawaredene in the deep off Thilan Thushara, who bled 42 runs in his four overs. Malinga and Thissara Perera (2/44) did well in the end for their side as Sri Lanka conceded just 37 runs in the last five overs.

England pip Kiwis, Pak enter semis
Gros Islet (St Lucia), May 11 After Pakistan beat South Africa at the same venue a few hours before to rekindle their semifinal hopes, New Zealand desperately needed a win against England to qualify as the second team from Group E. But it was not to be as the defeat and an inferior net run-rate saw the Kiwis being pipped to the post by a Shahid Afridi and his men.
Paul Collingwood and his men showed they were in no mood to entertain the Kiwi hopes as they first restricted New Zealand to 149 for six and then cruised to 153 for seven in 19.1 overs. England's successful chase was built on cameos from Eoin Morgan (40 off 34 balls) and Michael Lumb (32). Earlier, New Zealand rode on useful knocks from Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum and Scott Styris to post a modest 149 for six. In the face of England's disciplined attack, McCullum (33 off 32 balls) was not at his attacking best and it was the 62-run fourth wicket partnership between Ross Taylor (44) and Scott Styris (31) which turned out to be the cornerstone of the Kiwi innings. New Zealand's was a rather sluggish start despite two stroke-makers -- McCullum and Jesse Ryder (9) -- opening the innings after skipper Daniel Vettori had won the toss and opted to bat first in the do-or-die match. The opening stand had yielded 30 runs when Tim Bresnan castled Ryder in the fifth over. McCullum tried to assert himself but timing was not always perfect and he struggled to find gaps, partly because of his penchant to hit the ball too hard. The desperation to break loose grew as the English bowlers maintained a stifling line and length and Graeme Swann dealt a double blow in successive overs to peg back the Kiwis. The off-spinner first induced a fatal slog-sweep from Raymond in his second over and returned to have McCullum caught in the deep. Styris joined Taylor in the middle and the duo stepped on gas, helping themselves to some welcome boundaries. — PTI

Adriano, Ronaldinho left out of Brazil’s
Rio De Janeiro, May 11 He has had a much improved season for the Serie A club but has not done enough to convince the coach he deserves a recall. Former Inter Milan striker Adriano, top scorer last year when Flamengo won the Brazilian championship, has struggled for form and with off-field issues as well he has played in roughly half his club's games. Dunga's choice left Brazil heavily dependent on Kaka for midfield creativity and could leave them short of options if he gets injured. VfL Wolfsburg striker Grafite, overlooked last year when he was the Bundesliga's top scorer with 28 goals, was included. The 31-year-old was given a surprise call-up for February's friendly against Ireland, when he made only his second international appearance. Brazil, five-times world champions, face Portugal, North Korea and Ivory Coast in Group G, which is one of the toughest pools in the tournament. — Reuters |

London, May 11
Also included were midfielders Scott Parker, Joe Cole and Gareth Barry, who had been a doubt after an ankle injury had ruled him out of action for the next three weeks. There is a strong Spurs presence with Dawson joined by fellow defender Ledley King, midfielders Tom Huddlestone and Aaron Lennon plus strikers Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe.
Darren Bent, who was third-top scorer in the Premier League last season with 24, is also among the forwards bidding to accompany first choice Wayne Rooney, who netted 26 league goals, but there is no place for Carlton Cole or Bobby Zamora. Capello, who will cut the squad for South Africa to 23 at the end of the month, will take his 30 players to a high-altitude training camp in Austria and has friendlies against Mexico and Japan to help him make his final decision.

Indian eves crush Lanka to enter semis
Basseterre (St Kitts), May 11 Off-spinner Diana David (4/12) wreaked havoc with the ball to restrict Sri Lanka to 73 for nine after India rode on twin half-centuries from opener Sulakshana Naik (59 off 54 balls) and Mithali Raj (52 not out off 39 balls) to post a commanding 144 for three in their allotted 20 overs. Defending the total, Diana mowed down the Lankan top order to restrict Sri Lanka well ahead of the 100-run mark with just two batters — Deepika Rasangika (31 not out) and Eshani Kaushalya (10) — managing double digit scores. Even though Diana starred with the ball it was Sulakshana who was adjudged player of the match. Brief score: Sri Lanka: 73 for 9 in 20 overs (Rasangika 31*, Kaushalya 10; David 4/15). |

West Indies fined for slow over-rate
Gros Islet (St Lucia), May 11 Captain Chris Gayle was fined 40 per cent of his match fee while his players received 20 per cent penalties. If Gayle, as captain, is guilty of two further similar over-rate offences in Twenty20 internationals over the next 12 months, he will receive a one-match suspension as per the provisions of the ICC Code of Conduct. In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct regulations governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount. Rohit Sharma fined for showing dissent
Rohit Sharma has been docked 15 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent during India's 14-run defeat to the West Indies in their Twenty20 World Cup Super Eight Group F match in Bridgetown. The middle order batsman had stood his ground, indicating to umpire Billy Bowden that the ball had gone off his arm en route to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin off Kieron Pollard during the yesterday's match.

Indian wrestlers out to prove their worth
New Delhi, May 11 India is fielding a maximum of 21 wrestlers in the three categories. Apart from Sushil (freestyle 66kg), last year's bronze medallist woman wrestler Alka Tomar (59kg), experienced Rajiv Tomar (freestyle 120kg) and young Narsingh Pancham Yadav (freestyle 74kg) are vying for top honours. Around 350 wrestlers from 21 countries will participate in the test event for the Commonwealth Games. — PTI |
Sofia, May 11 Anand first won the world title in 2000 and held it till 2002 when the chess world was still split. He became the undisputed World champion in 2007 and then retained the title in 2008 when he beat Vladimir Kramnik. This time around he beat Topalov to cement his place among one of the games’ all-time greats. Anand, who travelled more than 40 hours by road to reach the venue as flights in Europe were suspended due to the volcanic ash from Iceland, lost the first game. He, however, quickly hit back with wins in the second and third game. Anand held his lead past the midway stage of the match, before Topalov caught up with Anand in eighth game to equalize the match scores. In game nine Anand had his chances but failed to find the crucial win. Then again in game 11, both players had a nail-biting clash before sending the match into the 12th and final game. The game began with Topalov having the advantage of white pieces, but Anand, who is considered one of the most aggressive players in world chess, held his own and found the winning route with black pieces as his opponent blundered in crucial stages. The game started with a Queen's Gambit Declined Lasker Variation, a solid but not very commonly used at this level. This variation saw a lot of exchanges but with Topalov going for a win, the game became very sharp. However with 32...fxe4 Topalov blundered horribly and from there on he was a slide. — IANS |
Thomas and Uber Cup
New Delhi, May 11 “It was a satisfying day for us but I am a little surprised by the doubles loss. It was unexpected but otherwise everybody played upto the mark. There will be a draw of the lot and we will come to know tonight whom we play tomorrow,” Arvind said from Kuala Lumpur. Asked about the conditions, Arvind said, “It is a little windy inside and so there is a bit of drift so the shuttle moves more in the air. But we cannot complain because it is same for our rivals.” The women's Uber Cup team, which had already reached the quarters yesterday, however, had a tough day as none apart from Saina could get past the formidable Koreans. World number six Saina started the Indian proceedings, carving out a hard-fought 22-20, 18-21, 17-21 win over Seung Hee Bae in a 66-minute marathon battle. — PTI |
India draw Brazil in Davis Cup
New Delhi, May 11 India had lost to Russia in March in the first round of the World Group to get to play-offs while Brazil had whitewashed 5-0 in the semifinals of the America Zone group I competition to give themselves a chance to re-enter World Group. They last played in the World Group in 2003 while India played in the World Group after a long gap of 11 years. The head-to-head score between India and Brazil is tied at 1-1. The winning nation will advance to next year's World Group first round while the losing country will compete in its respective Zone Group. India have been doing good of late in the Davis Cup after the coming of Somdev Devvarman, who has done extremely well in the singles. However, Brazil also have good top-100 players in their ranks. Their top player Thomaz Bellucci is World number 26. Ricardo Mello (92) and Marcos Daniel (99) are in the top-bracket. — PTI |
Kozhikode, May 11 Mohun Bagan found the equaliser 30 minutes later through man-of-the-match Jose Ramires Barreto who surprised the hosts by netting a swift goal. With just one match left to be played with East Bengal in the last qualifying match in Kolkata later this month, Viva Kerala managed to keep their hopes alive in the tournament by tallying 29 points after 25 rounds. — PTI |
New Delhi, May 11 Gill telephoned Rajpal in Ipoh and conveyed his wishes for the team which is defending its title there. “I’m delighted that our boys have beaten world champion Australia. I congratulate the boys and I am confident that they will do well in the future matches and win the Cup,” Gill said in his message. — PTI |
