Residents irked at power cuts
Dehradun, April 18 They, however, admitted that the power situation in the state was getting worst. “We have to return 2 Million Unit (MU) of power, one each to Delhi and West Bengal every day. Then Northern Grid is not allowing us to overdraw as despite many warnings we had been overdrawing power in the past few days, which costs us quite heavily at the rate of Rs 10.29. The frequency is also touching the 49 mark these days which is not a good sign for us,” said an official. The state at the moment is resorting to load shedding given to the shortage of 7-9 MU every day. The low level of the Ganga, Yamuna and Tauns rivers is said to chiefly responsible for this crisis. The UPCL is eyeing rain to save it from this crisis. “At this time, all four states Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pardesh, from whom we take power on a banking basis, are themselves facing a power crisis. So none is ready to lose their power share to us. In such a situation, we have no other alternative than to go for power shedding or to depend on weather to replenish our rivers with water,”
he added. Villages too are reeling under power cuts stretching as long as nine hours. Hundreds of villagers, including those from Raiwala, Ballawala, Kuanwala and Tunwala, protested at the UPCL office a day before where AK Johri, Project Director, had to relent to bring down power cut in these villages to three hours only. Line loss too is going on regularly. The UPCL has stepped up raids in villages to rein in power thieves. Cong to hold protest against state govt

Join hands, PWD, Forest Dept told
Tribune News Service
Nainital, April 18 Addressing participants at a review meeting on developmental works in the district at Bhimtal Friday afternoon, Bisht said the delay in construction of roads was hampering development in other spheres. He suggested that in case the delay in transfer of forest land was on account of large number of trees coming in the way of the proposed roads, fresh proposals should be made and the width of proposed road be reduced. Bisht advised that instead of seeking clearance for construction of a long stretch of road, proposals be made for small patches so that clearances can be obtained at the level of the Nodal Officers. Expressing his displeasure at the pending works, he said that contractors responsible for delays up to four years in construction of roads should be given notices and asked to complete their task at the earliest. If they continue to be lax in their approach, they must be blacklisted. The minister said that the villagers should be taken into confidence while initiating work on the construction of roads which are being delayed on account of local controversies. Taking stock of the functioning of the Jal Nigam, Jal Sansthan and Irrigation Department, the minister said public representatives should be made familiar in execution of projects under the SWAP mode. He said SWAP committees should be set up in all gram sabhas. He also said areas facing water shortage must be supplied drinking water through water tankers. Similarly, private agencies must be asked to repair tubewells that have become non-functional. The minister added that mini-tubewells be installed in places where there was water shortage on account of drying up of natural sources. He further ordered that proper outlets of canals be built so that irrigation facilities could be provided for sugarcane and vegetable cultivation. |

Corps of Signals celebrate centenary
Nainital, April 18 The band came up with one melodious tune after the other in perfect synchronisation. The ambiance of the mountains all around added to the charm of the event in which Army officers, jawans, their families and several civilian dignitaries had their appetite for good music satiated. The performance began with all-time popular military tunes and the bagpipers and the drummers went on to play several popular tunes from Bollywood drawing a thunderous applause every time. The performers were led by Naib Subedar SA Kumbhar. The No.1 Band of the corps has an interesting history. It was in 1918 when eight buglers from Corps of Sappers and Miners were selected to form the band. Since some of the buglers could play pipes, they were used for playing the instrument from 1921 to 1926. The band was originally known as Shehnai Band. It was formally set up in 1927, but the establishment effectively came into being only in 1940. Initially, the band existed in three parts located at Bangalore, Sialkot and Rawalpindi. After 1947, it was combined at Jabalpur and was renamed as the Pipes and Drums Band. It has fostered the spirit-de-corps among the ranks and has helped in acquainting officers and men with military music besides giving them inspiration and encouragement. Before the band took over, the audience was treated to a breathtaking display of martial arts. It began with a performance by the tae kwon do team of the corps which displayed an ideal combination of skill and endurance to perform various feats. Their presentation was full of high-flying kicks, fire-ring kicks, breaking of tiles etc. The team performed under Havildar L Raja Singh. The main attraction of the evening was the presentation of the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu. It is an ancient art that includes the use of knives, spears and swords. For this art, one needs years of practice, very strong reflexes and concentration. It involves some moves that puts the audience on tenterhooks as the performers leap high into the air to counter the attacks of spears and swords. Its moves are out of the world and breathtaking. The Saturday’s performance was led by Lance Naik Jitesh. Kalaripayattu is said to be the mother of all martial arts. Traditional masters of Kalari attribute Parasurama, believed to be the incarnation of the supreme Lord and the creator of Kerala, with instituting 108 kalaris over the land. This legend on the origin of the institutions propagated by Keralopathi still lingers on in the conscious of the people. Some masters believe that Kalari system originated out of the wrath of Lord Shiva to destroy Dakshayaga. Parasurama is supposed to have studied this art from him and taught to 21 of his disciples. The chief guest for the evening was Kumaon Commissioner S Raju while chairperson for the ceremony was Lieutenant General AJS Bhalla (retired). Colonel VRS Katoch of the corps said, “During our centenary celebrations, we are organising a series of events that are aimed at bringing the Army and the civilians closer.” |

Cong only pro-women party: Rashmi
Roorkee, April 18 And with the Congress chief also being a women and several other constitutional positions being headed by women, the Congress is the only party that has always been pro-women. This was stated by Congress state general secretary Rashmi Chaudhari in Roorkee at a party meeting held on the sidelines of annual functions being organised on the completion of 125 years of formation of the party. The party was founded in 1885. Highlighting the role of the Congress in the Freedom Movement and post-Independence, Rashmi Chaudhary said that the Congress gave freedom fighters a platform from where the national movement got a direction which eventually led to India getting independence in 1947. “Pre-independence, the Congress played the role of a freedom fighter and post-independence, it donned the developmental and visionary role putting India onto the world map as a developing nation to be reckoned with,” said Chaudhari. Terming the Congress as the only well-wisher of women, Rashmi said that if the Women’s Reservation Bill is seeing the light in Parliament, it is only due to the persistent and consistent efforts of the party. “Due to the Congress being adamant on Bill, other parties followed suit and even those who opposed failed to put up any opposition as without women being in the political mainstream, the country cannot progress.” She cited examples of responsibilities given to women in Union and state cabinets and other party positions. Lashing out at the state government, she said that the Nishank-led government was a weak government which has put the state on the path of insecurity. She took a dig at the Chief Minister saying that on the one hand, the CM called Uttarakhand ‘urja pradesh’ while on other, people have to face electricity and water cuts for hours. |
