Railway week function
: The 55th Railway Week Function was held in the auditorium of Diesel Loco Modernisation Works -- a production unit of the Indian Railways. AK Malhotra, chief administrative officer of DMW, was the chief guest. This year’s function assumes special significance in view of record breaking performance of the DMW on production front. The DMW rebuilt 112 loco against the target of 108 during 2009-10. In money value, a total production of Rs 853 crore has been achieved during financial year 2009-10, which is 25 per cent higher than the previous year. In recognition of exceptional performance, 227 individual and 47 group awards were presented.

Farewell function
: Students of Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology organised a farewell function for their graduating seniors here on Saturday. Ramp show and quiz contest were the highlight of the event. Mohit Gautam of MCA and Baani of electronics and communication engineering department were crowned Mr Abientot and Miss Abientot. Ravish Sharma and Manveen Kaur of computer science department were crowned Mr Poise and Miss Poise, respectively. The college colours were won by Samaksh Chadha of mechanical engineering and Jeevanjot of electronics and communication engineering department.

Recruitment test: B2B Company India Mart conducted an online recruitment test at Aryans Group of Colleges wherein around 40 MBA students of Aryans Business School and Aryans School of Management appeared. The test was conducted for the post of senior customer care executive.

Shop burgled:
Thieves decamped with goods worth Rs 40,000, along with Rs 4,000 cash, after breaking into 6Ten department store from Pabhat village, near Lucky Dhaba, on Saturday. According to sources, owner of the shop Amandeep Singh, a resident of Mohali, alleged that he got a call from his neighbour this morning who informed him that the shutter of the shop was open and locks were broken. On reaching the spot he found that the shop was ransacked. He alleged that the items stolen included boxes of desi ghee, dry fruits and refined oil.

CHANDIGARH

Elected: PC Sanghi was unanimously re-elected chairman of the Federation of Sector Welfare Associations (FOSWAC) for the term 2010-12 at a meeting here on Sunday. It was his fourth consecutive term as chairman. Gurdev Singh Ahluwalia and Hitesh Kumar Puri were elected vice-chairman and general secretary, respectively. Sanghi stated that first priority would be to seek cooperation of all representatives of the associations to maintain unity and brotherhood and to further strengthen the FOSWAC.

Association head: JD Gupta has been elected president of the Property Consultants Association, Chandigarh. Gupta said his priority would be to ensure a conducive work environment for its members and better coordination between the association and the administration.

Ambala
Research-paper writing
: A workshop on “Writing research and scholarly articles” was organised at PKR College of Education, Ambala City, today. SK Mohanty, head of the department of education, Noida College of Physical Education, was the key speaker. Around 235 students attended the workshop. Mohanty said students and research scholars faced a problem in writing research papers. He said universities and the educational institutions should encourage scholars. He gave tips on research-paper writing. Eminent educationists Aarti Shrivastava, Sushmita Chakarborty and Vivek Kohli said teachers should keep themselves updated. 

BHIWANI
Ban on pvt tubewells
: Deputy Commissioner Ramesh Chand Verma has issued ban orders on the installation of private tubewells or public drinking water connection within a radius of 100 m of all drinking water schemes set up by the Public Health and Engineering Department in the district. The DC said the orders had been issued to maintain adequate regular drinking water supply to the people of the district in summers. 

REWARI
Degrees awarded
: The convocation-cum-prize distribution function of Rao Abhay Singh (Postgraduate) College of Education was held on the college campus at the nearby Saharanwas village here on Saturday. Education and Health Minister Geeta Bhukkal was the chief guest. Degrees were awarded to 200 BEd and 50 MEd pupil teachers of the college. Bhukkal, who laid the foundation stone of Shrimati Shanti Devi College of Nursing, announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the college.

Villagers meet DC: Elders of Karnawas village, accompanied by DSP Pooran Chand Panwar, met Deputy Commissioner A Sriniwas here on Sunday and submitted a memorandum seeking improvement in the erratic power as well as water supplies which had been causing considerable hardships.

YAMUNANAGAR
PO arrested
: The police on Saturday arrested proclaimed offender (PO) Rohtas after one and a half years. He has been allegedly involved in the double murder of Hadev Singh and Shiv Kumar in Jagadhri. A group of over 20 persons had allegedly murdered two youths - Hardev Singh and Shiv Kumar - in Jagadhri on October 10, 2008 following an old rivalry. Thereafter, the police had arrested seven accused while the rest absconded.
