Chief Justice JS Khehar visits Dehradun
Dehradun, March 12 Secretary Rajiv Sharma put across all grievances of the Bar, including impulsive behaviour of judges with lawyers, negligence of presiding officers in court room, variation between the list of public holidays given by the state government and courts and proposed the better use of empty rooms in the district court for various tribunals. Accepting the grievances of the Bar, the Chief Justice addressed them, for the first time in Hindi, with a sense of deep belongingness. He lauded advocates for informing him about antagonistic behaviour of judges and assured them of taking concrete action in this direction. He also urged advocates to call off their 27-year old strike of boycotting work on Saturday to press upon their demand to get the high court seat for Dehradun. He refused of owning any authority in this matter and suggested to resolve it politically. He also urged advocates to rather pay attention to the progression of their career instead of neglecting it for the sake of the high court. He invited them to work at Nainital, where he has managed to take 9.5-acre land for the construction of flats for advocates. He also informed the audience that by the month of May all pending vacancies of the District Sessions and Additional District and Sessions judges would be filled up in the state. Talking about his odyssey from a fun loving college boy to the honourable Chief Justice, he said, “I as a carefree college pass out lacked confidence initially to face the courts. Then after lot of struggle, the cases of poor people and Class IV employees came my way.” The tears twinkled in his eyes but he held them back by taking a long pause and said, “I got little bit money after much struggle, which I put in an envelop by writing name of my son on it, in case if something happened to me.” But success followed him thereafter. He said, “From Class IV employees to Class III, II and I, I earned money in lakhs, crores and more than that. I gave good education to my children, good medical care to my parents for 20 years. Then I felt peace in life. Now it was the time to give back the debt to the institution and people who brought me to this level. For the past 11 years, I paid the debt in Chandigarh and now is the turn of Uttarakhand.” He asked advocates to develop a sense of service but admitted that it could not be felt unless one became financially secure in life. He said, “Recognition comes in a lawyer’s life quite late when he becomes senior advocate, a position which makes him eligible for a judge’s position. “So I want you to dream of reaching those heights and shun strike for your personal growth’s sake and also to respect the time and money of litigants.” |

Controversy erupts over electric poles’ installation
Dehradun, March 12 Washing his hands off from the controversy, Mayor Vinod Chamoli said, “It is for the first time I gave counsellors a free hand in deciding about the places for the installation of electric poles as they accuse me all the time of meddling in their affairs. Now, they have put me in an embarrassing situation and spoiled my image”. He also ridiculed the impression that the DMC had no idea about the poles being distributed first to counsellors and then the account being settled in the registers. “There is no place for storing 400 electric poles on DMC premises. So it was logical to dispatch these to counsellors straightway,” he said. The Mayor has now designated some staff to look into the matter to keep him informed. Miffed with senior counsellor of BJP Deepa Shah, who has threatened to commit suicide if the electric pole is shifted from the Bindal area, the Mayor said, “Deepa Shah, who installed the pole illegally in the middle of the Bindal river area, has threatened suicide if the pole is removed from the place. But if she is sticking to her ground, I too can not accept her wrongdoings with open eyes. I’ll not be providing electric current to the pole”. Chamoli said there was no question of providing electricity to the slum area, which in any case had to be shifted. Deepa defending her action said people in the slum area around the Bindal river had been living there for the past 25-30 years and had got voter cards and ration cards, which was why they had all rights to have basic amenities”. |

Cong leaders meet Secy over taxes
Dehradun, March 12 Senior leader Dinesh Aggrawal said: “It is illogical to impose UP pattern of taxes on Uttarakhand which is entirely different in its geographical nature. All Congress councillors at the last board meetings had rejected these measures, still they are being imposed on people. Then the uniformity in taxes without considering the class different is wrong. “The small enterpreuners, who are already burdened with sky-rocking construction costs, would find it much difficult to pay these taxes. The slums that have also been brought under the tax purview will not be able to pay them at all. The DMC has failed to do any development work in the 18 villages, where it is asking for taxes which is unbearable.” Delegation, comprising Pritam Singh, Jot Singh Gunsola and leader of Congress councillors Ashok Verma, urged Vadhawan to cancel the new tax regulations unless the state did not have its own MC Act. |

He had earlier related to the police that he had been informed of the incident by Kosi following which he had rushed to the house to find Alpana lying burnt on the floor.
