4 killed as buildings collapse
Ludhiana, March 12

They wanted to stay home, but death beckoned

In hindsight it would appear Gorakh Ram, 35, and his nephew Dhananjay, 22, from Rohtas district in Bihar were drawn to the city a month ago by the angel of death. Though both were unwilling to go to Ludhiana, Gorakh’s brother-in-law, Hari Narayan, virtually forced them to make the trip and work in the city a month ago.

LIT hikes reserve price of properties

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) has adopted a proposal to increase the reserve price of residential plots in various schemes in the city by 10 per cent while the prices of commercial properties, both sites and built-up shops and booths, have gone up by 20 per cent as per the orders of the state government.

Jilted lover commits suicide

A 23-year-old jilted lover today reportedly committed suicide by consuming poison at his house in Iqbal Ganj Chowk.

IT survey: Rs 2.2 cr more detected
Ludhiana, March 12
Income tax surveys carried out on the directions of the Chief Commissioner, IT, GS Randhawa, has resulted in the declaration of an additional income of Rs 2.2 crore. Surveys were conducted by the Additional Commissioner, Range III, under the supervision of the Commissioner of IT-I, on Sleek Knitwears and Oslo Knitwears Group.

In the 214th meeting of the PAU Board of Management held today at PAU Camp Office, SAS Nagar, Mohali, the budget estimates for the year 2010-11 were approved at Rs 319.96 crore.

Docs, working women urge MPs to lend support

The Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has made a fervent appeal to all Lok Sabha members to vote for the Women Reservation Bill when it is presented before the House. Dr LS Chawla, president, Dr Arun Mitra, general secretary, and Dr Bharti Uppal, finance secretary of IDPD, have expressed concern at the reports that a few MPs were thinking in terms of opposing the Bill and might even defy the party whip.

MC renews contract with park committees
Ludhiana, March 12
One of the big parks that is being neglected in Ludhiana. The Municipal Corporation has renewed the contract of managing the parks with the park management committees for another year. With this, the panels might heave a sigh of relief, at the same time they feel that the corporation should have increased rates for maintaining the parks in the fresh contract. The contract had expired on February 28.

Rly pensioners sore over poor medical facilities

Railway pensioners are sore over the poor medical facilities available at the railway health unit (RHU) here, and the situation has compounded further due to the inordinate delay in the upgradation of these health units to sub-divisional hospital, which was to be completed by March 2009.

Vigilance team takes road samples

A team of the vigilance wing of the local bodies department, Punjab, inspected various roads here today.  Officials reportedly took samples of the link road from Dholewal Chowk to Pratap Chowk, Chandigarh road, main road of Feroze Gandhi market and the road opposite the Circuit House.

‘Sikh relics’ found near gurdwara to be examined
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 12
Weapons recovered during the digging near a gurdwara at Kailey village near Ahmedgarh. Did the sixth Sikh guru leave behind a few weapons on the outskirts of Kailey village near Ludhiana during his halt during his ‘dharam parchar’ tours of the region in 1621? The recovery of some sharp-edged weapons and a ‘chur’ during digging in the vicinity of the village gurudwara, built in memory of Guru Har Gobind, has raised this question among Sikh intellectuals.

Alert driver of a senior journalist and a security guard of a restaurateur foiled a robbery bid by chasing a snatcher, who ran away with the briefcase of the journalist carrying important documents.

Computer centre owner robbed
Khanna, March 12
Four persons robbed Rs 1.7 lakh in cash, 14 laptops, a car, jewellery and mobile phones from the owner of a computer service centre in GTB Market here last night. In his complaint to the police, Ajit Sharma, owner of Center Computer Services, alleged that the armed men robbed him last night when he was sitting in his shop.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Munish Singal has convicted Sumit Verma, alias Sunny, of New Kundanpuri of causing death of his colleague Mohd Harun of Chouwani Mohalla.
